Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scientific biography of the mathematician Joseph Liouville is divided into two parts. The first part is a chronological account of Liouville's career including a description of the institutions he worked in, his relations with his teachers, colleagues and students, and the historical context of his works. It portrays the French scientific community in a period when Germany and England had surpassed France as the leading nations in mathematics and physics. The second part of the book gives a detailed analysis of Liouville's major contributions to mathematics and mechanics. The gradual development of Liouville's ideas, as reflected in his publications and notebooks, are related to the works of his predecessors and his contemporaries as well as to later developments in the field. On the basis of Liouville's unpublished notes the book reconstructs Liouville's hitherto unknown theories of stability of rotating masses of fluid, potential theory, Galois theory and electrodynamics. It also incorporates valuable added information from Liouville's notes regarding his works on differentiation of arbitrary order, integration in finite terms, Sturm-Liouville theory, transcendental numbers, doubly periodic functions, geometry and mechanics.

Book excerpt: The distinction between basic and applied research was central to twentieth-century science and policymaking, and if this framework has been contested in recent years, it nonetheless remains ubiquitous in both scientific and public discourse. Employing a transnational, diachronic perspective informed by historical semantics, this volume traces the conceptual history of the basic–applied distinction from the nineteenth century to today, taking stock of European developments alongside comparative case studies from the United States and China. It shows how an older dichotomy of pure and applied science was reconceived in response to rapid scientific progress and then further transformed by the geopolitical circumstances of the postwar era.

Book excerpt: This textbook concerns thermal properties of bulk matter and is aimed at advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate students in a range of programs in science or engineering. It provides an intermediate level presentation of statistical thermodynamics for students in the physical sciences (chemistry, nanosciences, physics) or related areas of applied science/engineering (chemical engineering, materials science, nanotechnology engineering), as they are areas in which statistical mechanical concepts play important roles. The book enables students to utilize microscopic concepts to achieve a better understanding of macroscopic phenomena and to be able to apply these concepts to the types of sub-macroscopic systems encountered in areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Book excerpt: New knowledge emerges out of lateral thinking and intuition, long-term preoccupations and unexpected turns, raw evidence, reality checks, and other motives. Through content and format, Forty-Five builds a new lineage for non-traditional research: work by amateurs, moonlighters, and others experimenting both inside and outside of institutional or disciplinary frameworks. It also includes traditional scholarship about outside researchers and their work.Every paper in Forty-Five is accompanied by a review: reflections and speculations prompted by the initial contribution. Each review is the first step in a dialog, a productive response in keeping with the spirit of outside research.Forty-Five is open-source. Its basic unit is the paper. All papers can be accessed online and downloaded for free. Readers can also compile content into volumes to purchase through print on demand. Submissions are welcome.A distinctive angle, a dimension with consequence, and a platform for sharing new knowledge, Forty-Five is published by Acute Angles Incorporated, a Chicago-based non-profit corporation committed to editorial, curatorial, and event-based projects in arts and culture.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis, (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 19 (thesis year 1974) a total of 10,045 theses titles from 20 Canadian and 209 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 19 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Book excerpt: This book is focused predominantly on academicians, research scholars belong to science and engineering, managers, scientists, technicians, and other professionals in the field of qualitative research. This book is comprehended from different sources of research in Science and Technology. On the first occasion, the task of providing researchers with a broad view of the relationship between science and technology. The second reason for writing the book was the need to fill a gap in academics and research. While many excellent books, documents, and article exist for innovative practices, we have not found a work in which we can properly understand the content that the researcher needs to understand. So, after much deliberation, we decided to collect all quality efforts in one string. At the most basic level, this book is trying to show research scholars; what science, technology, and innovations are all about. It cannot study or gain knowledge of that part and is at a level that most researchers should find clear and understandable. Our goal was to develop content that will help researchers who are beginning to use innovative practices. We hope to meet the needs of academicians, research scholars who are being encouraged to incorporate more reading and writing in the field of science and technology. In summary, this book is targeted to the needs of individuals engaged in quality research activities in science and technology. Our goal is to present the topics of creativity and innovation to this audience in a way that enables them to incorporate new skills into their daily work. We would like to thank all the contributors who have made the production of this book so fascinating and enjoyable. Their scholarship and dedicated commitment and motivation to ‘getting it right’ are the keys to the book’s quality, and we greatly appreciate their good nature over many months in the face of our editorial demands and time limits. We are also grateful for using their texts, ideas, and critical remarks We would also like to thank Prof Dr Nilam N Ghuge, Prof Dr D Ayub Khan Dawood, Prof Dr Vilas A Pharande, all reviewers and all authors for their help in consolidating the interdisciplinary of the book. We are grateful to all the 18 institutions for their support. It will not be possible to bring out this edition.

Book excerpt: The effects of inadequate diets on the population include malnutrition, non-communicable diseases and obesity. 'Hidden hunger', also known as micronutrient deficiencies, leads to various health-related disorders and diseases. Indigenous plants, in the form of indigenous fruits and leafy vegetables are gaining interest as a source of nutrients and bioactive phytochemicals, satisfying both food demand and health needs. Moreover, with the impact of climate change, and the importance of sustainability of food systems, it is essential that we investigate new, forgotten and alternative crops that can thrive in harsh conditions, require low fertilizer input, and are easily harvestable. This is an essential resource for academic researchers and industry professionals in the fields of horticulture, agriculture, crop science, human health and nutrition.
