Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Review, 1903, Vol. 16: A Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics With the assistance of Mr. Angus L. Cavanagh, a student of physics in Stanford University, I have made a new determination. We have used that general method in which a right cylinder of water of cross-section (q) is set perpendicular to a magnetic field whose strength at one end of the cylinder is equal to (h) and at the other end is negligible. (k) is given by the equation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Review, 1915, Vol. 6: A Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics It must be recognized, however, that any purely thermodynamic discussion cannot carry us very far on our way. What we are searching for ultimately is a description Of the construction of the atom so detailed that we can describe how the atoms are put together in a crystal, and how and why they fall apart when they melt. We are very far indeed from such a goal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Review, Vol. 35: A Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics Conducted With the Co-Operation of the American Physical Society N our former paper' we described some experiments performed on a Lecher system using a paalzow-rubens bolometer. The present paper is a continuation of that work but instead of a bolometer a thermal couple was employed. This has the advantage over the bolometer of greater constancy, because it is not dependent upon any auxiliary battery circuit. Its introduction led to some rather interesting results as will be seen further along in this paper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Perspectives in Theoretical Physics by : J. B. Sykes
Download or read book Perspectives in Theoretical Physics written by J. B. Sykes and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evgenii Mikhailovich Lifshitz is perhaps best known for his long association with his mentor Lev D Landau, with whom he co-wrote the classic Course of Theoretical Physics, but he was a noted and respected Soviet physicist in his own right. Born in the Ukraine to a scientific family, his long and distinguished career will be remembered for three things - his collaboration with Landau on the internationally acclaimed Course of Theoretical Physics, his work as editor of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, and his scientific papers. As well as his work with Landau, E\M\Lifshitz collaborated with many noted Soviet scientists such as I\M\Khalatnikov, I\E\Dyzaloshinskii, V\V\Sudakov, V\A\Belinskii and the editor of this book, L\P\Pitaevskii. Many of the papers presented in this book include their contribution. Collected together they give a comprehensive and penetrating insight into the man and his work, clearly showing Lifshitz's contribution to physics and the influences on his work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Review, 1894, Vol. 1: A Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics The galvanometer used was similar in many respects to the instrument described by B. W. Snow,1 though designed and built independently and used several months before the description referred to appeared. The aggregate weight of the moving parts of the galvanometer was 48 mgs. Throughout the work the four coils were connected in multiple with a resistance of ohms. The sensitiveness was varied from time to time for convenience, but for the measurement of energy in the weaker parts of the spectrum deflections corresponding to currents of ampere were read. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Review, Vol. 2: A Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics The Carcel lamp has stood the test of time but-little better than the best of standard candles. It has disadvantages entailed by the use of a light-absorbing chimney and a rapidly charring wick while of its reproducibility, within a reasonable margin of error, there is serious question. Although the Carcel lamp furnishes a very steady source of light, it is known to show slow changes in the amount of light emitted, rising slowly to a maximum as the lamp and oil become heated, and then falling off with the charring of the wick. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Review, 1910, Vol. 30: A Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics N 1879 Professor Halll discovered that when a thin sheet Of metal which is carrying a current Of electricity is brought into a magnetic field, so that the lines of force are perpendicular to the plane Of the plate, there is set up in the plate an electromotive force which is at right angles to that which is driving the current. This effect which is known as the Hall effect, has been the subject Of a large amount of experimental and theoretical work. In later years several other phenomena which are related to it have been discov ered and studied by other investigators. A fairly complete list Of titles Of articles on the Hall effect and allied phenomena has been prepared by mckay and a review Of the more important papers dealing with these phenomena has been recently published by 7ahn.' It does not seem desirable at this time to review again at any length the work which has been done in this region. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Review, Vol. 17: A Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, Conducted With the Co-Operation of the American Physical Society HE power of rotating the plane of polarization of transmitted radiation is particularly interesting in the region of the very short wave-lengths. In the first place it affords an indication of what the limiting value of the rotation would be for infinitely short waves. From theoretical considerations we might expect this lim iting value to be either zero or infinity, possibly a finite constant. Again, rotary dispersion in the ultra-violet affords valuable data for the theory of rotation in the neighborhood Of an'absorption band. Theoretically, we should have a greatly enhanced rotation near every absorption band and a large rotation of Opposite sense in the middle of the band. Now all transmission spectra end sooner or later in the ultra-violet in an absorption band, so that the ultra violet region is an excellent one for Obtaining the data desired. Previous work in the ultra-violet has been confined to quartz and sodium chlorate. Soret and Sarasin have observed the rotation of quartz out as far as the cadmium line 26, wave-length 1111. Book Synopsis Experimental Techniques in Nuclear and Particle Physics by : Stefaan Tavernier
Download or read book Experimental Techniques in Nuclear and Particle Physics written by Stefaan Tavernier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been teaching courses on experimental techniques in nuclear and particle physics to master students in physics and in engineering for many years. This book grew out of the lecture notes I made for these students. The physics and engineering students have rather different expectations of what such a course should be like. I hope that I have nevertheless managed to write a book that can satisfy the needs of these different target audiences. The lectures themselves, of course, need to be adapted to the needs of each group of students. An engineering student will not qu- tion a statement like “the velocity of the electrons in atoms is ?1% of the velocity of light”, a physics student will. Regarding units, I have written factors h and c explicitly in all equations throughout the book. For physics students it would be preferable to use the convention that is common in physics and omit these constants in the equations, but that would probably be confusing for the engineering students. Physics students tend to be more interested in theoretical physics courses. However, physics is an experimental science and physics students should und- stand how experiments work, and be able to make experiments work. This is an open access book.
