Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal-History of the Seventy-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 1866 In September, 1561, a group of young men at Chillicothe, Ohio, discussed the possibility of raising a new regiment of volunteers, under the first call of the President for three hundred thousand men. After due consideration, they determined to make the attempt, and invited Captain Orland Smith, of the "Chillicothe Greys," to accept the colonelcy, and Jacob Hyer, Esq., of Greenfield, the lieutenant-colonelcy of the regiment. These gentlemen accepted the positions tendered them, and at once gave themselves to the work of recruiting and organization, A number of conditional commissions were issued by the Governor, and, by the middle of October, the work of recruiting was fairly begun. The new regiment was to be called the Seventy-third Ohio, and was ordered to rendezvous at "Camp Logan," near Chillicothe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extraordinarily readable." --Paul D. Casdorph, author of Jackson and Lee Best remembered as the man who burned Atlanta and marched his army to the sea, cutting a swath of destruction through Georgia, William Tecumseh Sherman remains one of the most vital figures in Civil War annals. In The White Tecumseh, Stanley Hirshson has crafted a beautiful and rigorous work of scholarship, the only life of Sherman to draw on regimental histories and testimonies by the general's own men. What emerges is a landmark portrait of a brilliant but tormented soul, haunted by a family legacy of mental illness and relentlessly driven to realize a powerful military ambition. "Sympathetic yet excellent . . . insight into how Sherman's own troops felt about him and his relationships with fellow generals, especially Grant. . . . Highly recommended." --Library Journal
Book Synopsis New Perspectives on the Union War by : Gary W. Gallagher
Download or read book New Perspectives on the Union War written by Gary W. Gallagher and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Gary Gallagher and Elizabeth Varon, two of the most prominent nineteenth-century American historians in the nation, New Perspectives on the Union War provides a more nuanced understanding of what “Union” meant in the Civil War North by exploring how various groups of northerners conceived of the term. The essays in this volume demonstrate that while there was a broad consensus that the war was fought, or should be fought, for the cause of Union, there was bitter disagreement over how to define that cause—debate not only between political camps but also within them. The chapters touch on economics, politics, culture, military affairs, ethnicity, and questions relating to just war. Contributors: Michael T. Caires, Frank Cirillo, D.H. Dilbeck, Jack Furniss, Jesse George-Nichol, William B. Kurtz, Peter C. Luebke, and Tamika Nunley
