Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Jongen was Director of the Brussels Conservatoire from 1925 to 1939. He was first and foremost a composer and yet his career as an organist and composer of organ music was remarkable. His Sonata Eroca has become one of the enduring works of the repertory, and the Symphonie Concertante, commissioned by Rodman Wanamaker for the organ of the Philadelphia store, has been considered the finest of all twentieth-century organ concertos. This is the first book ever to appear about Joseph Jongen in any language. It is based on twenty years of research by its author, John Scott Whiteley. Part I traces Jongen's life and achievements as an organist, from his earliest training in Franck's birthplace, Lige, to his exile in England and his final years in Brussels, during which time he headed the team that designed the organ for Belgian Radio. Part II is a guide to the organ music from the points of view of both performer and musicologist. Appendices provide a catalogue of works, a numbering system for his works without opus numbers, specifications of the organs he played and lists of variant readings in his manuscripts. This book is indispensable for serious students of the organ, the Romantic organ repertoire and European music of the early twentieth century.

Book excerpt: When discussing organ music composed in France during the Romantic period, it is imperative to mention César Franck. Though his compositional output for the organ is smaller compared to his contemporaries, such as Widor and Guilmant, these works remain cornerstones of the repertoire that have stood the test of time. Franck was born in Liège in 1822. His father aspired for a virtuoso career for him and in 1836 they emigrated to Paris. He was enrolled in the Paris Conservatory in 1837. Franck enrolled in the organ class at the conservatory in 1842, which would be the beginning of a prolific career as an organist. In 1857, Franck was appointed as organist at Sainte-Clotilde and in 1871 was appointed as organ professor at the Paris Conservatory, positions he held until his death in 1890. Franck's large hands create problems of interpretation for performers, with wide intervallic spreads constantly found throughout the manual writing in his organ works. These problems make it difficult to play certain passages with a legato technique. It is this legato technique that Marcel Dupré and Charles-Marie Widor criticized Franck for not being able to demonstrate, though his work on the 1881 Braille edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's works demonstrates Franck's knowledge and application of the complete legato style. The Trois Chorals are the pinnacle of Franck's writing for the organ, written in the final months of Franck's life. Four primary editions of the Chorals are discussed and the variances that occur between them. Following this discussion is an analysis of the performances in recordings by Charles Tournemire, Jean Langlais, Marcel Dupré, and Gillian Weir of Franck's Choral No. 3 in A Minor. The analysis focuses on key moments of interpretive discrepancy. Joseph Jongen wrote more than thirty organ works, with the Sonata eroïca and Symphonie concertante as major landmarks in the instrument's repertoire. Jongen was active in the years immediately following Franck's death through World War II. Born in Liège, Jongen had an early start as a composer and organist. Jongen enrolled in the organ class at the Liège Conservatory in 1892, winning top prize with honors at the Concours Supérieur in 1896. Jongen won the Belgium Prix de Rome in 1897, which enabled him to travel to Europe. During this time, he consulted with Richard Strauss and Vincent d'Indy regarding his compositions. Jongen's magnum opus among his solo works for organ is the Sonata eroïca (Op. 94). In this symphonic-inspired work, Jongen presents unique registrations and ambiguous moments of registration changes, creating problems that the performer must solve, which are different from one instrument to another.

Book excerpt: The manuscripts and published editions of the sacred choral works by Belgian composer Joseph Jongen sacred choral music were collected and listed, detailing the discernable pertinent characteristics of each work. Jongen is predominantly known for his organ works, but his choral works constituent a worthy contribution to the vocal music repertoire, especially his Mass, Op. 130. Jongen2s music reflects the Impressionistic style while stemming from the school of Cšar Franck. Choral directors and other musicians interested in Jongen2s sacred choral works can use this work when exploring new repertoire. A short overview of Jongen2s life is included based upon the information given in John Scott Whiteley2s comprehensive book, Joseph Jongen and His Organ Music. Book excerpt: Louis Vierne (1870-1937), a student of Csar Franck and Charles-Marie Widor, was organist of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris for 37 years, until his death at the console during a recital. Widor's successor as the organ's great French symphonist - an assessment the passage of time has proved correct - Vierne's music has remained in the repertoire of organists throughout the world, never undergoing the periodic eclipses experienced by his contemporaries. Vierne's autobiography, Mes Souvenirs, originally published serially in the 1930s, is here available in a profusely illustrated, extensively annotated English translation. Rollin Smith's Louis Vierne: Organist of Notre Dame Cathedral is the first major study of the great organist of Notre-Dame and includes chapters on his American tour, recordings, contemporary reminiscences, definitive textual corrections, the organ symphonies, his death and succession, and a thematic catalogue of his organ works.

The early chapters tell of the instrument's history and construction, identify the scientific basis of its sounds and the development of its pitch and tuning, examine the history of the organ case, and consider the current trends and conflicts within the world of organ building. Central chapters investigate the practical art of learning and playing the organ, introduce the complex area of performance practice, and outline the relationship between organ playing and the liturgy of the church. The final section explores the vast repertoire of organ music, focusing on a selection of the most important traditions.
