Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "[The] rare biography of a public figure that's not only beautifully written, but also shockingly revelatory." -- The Atlantic A vivid biography of former First Lady Barbara Bush, one of the most influential and under-appreciated women in American political history. Barbara Pierce Bush was one of the country's most popular and powerful figures, yet her full story has never been told. THE MATRIARCH tells the riveting tale of a woman who helped define two American presidencies and an entire political era. Written by USA TODAY's Washington Bureau chief Susan Page, this biography is informed by more than one hundred interviews with Bush friends and family members, hours of conversation with Mrs. Bush herself in the final six months of her life, and access to her diaries that spanned decades. THE MATRIARCH examines not only her public persona but also less well-known aspects of her remarkable life. As a girl in Rye, New York, Barbara Bush weathered criticism of her weight from her mother, barbs that left lifelong scars. As a young wife, she coped with the death of her three-year-old daughter from leukemia, a loss that changed her forever. In middle age, she grappled with depression so serious that she contemplated suicide. And as first the wife and then the mother of American presidents, she made history as the only woman to see -- and advise -- both her husband and son in the Oval Office. As with many women of her era, Barbara Bush was routinely underestimated, her contributions often neither recognized nor acknowledged. But she became an astute and trusted political campaign strategist and a beloved First Lady. She invested herself deeply in expanding literacy programs in America, played a critical role in the end of the Cold War, and led the way in demonstrating love and compassion to those with HIV/AIDS. With her cooperation, this book offers Barbara Bush's last words for history -- on the evolution of her party, on the role of women, on Donald Trump, and on her family's legacy. Barbara Bush's accomplishments, struggles, and contributions are many. Now, Susan Page explores them all in THE MATRIARCH, a groundbreaking book certain to cement Barbara Bush as one of the most unique and influential women in American history.

Newspaper correspondents thronged into Bedford, Ind. The murder was covered widely and wildly in national newspapers. Large rewards were offered. Bedford was overrun with amateur detectives, and professional Pinkerton agency detectives became involved. Read the news coverage and learn what investigators were thinking. Discover evidence, suspects, confessions, rumors and theories. It was a dark, raw and rainy Thursday night, January 21, 1904, when the pretty young woman, a high school Latin teacher who roomed at Addie Smith's house during the school term left her room and walked to Martha Johnson's boarding house to have supper with friends. Her name-Miss Sarah Catherine Schafer from Elkhart, Ind.As was her routine, she anticipated going back to her rooming house after eating the evening meal. It is thought that on the way to supper, she called on Dr. J. B. Duncan, who lived at the corner of 14th and L Streets. They talked about a personal matter Sarah was experiencing and discussed Eva Love, Sarah's roommate, who was temporarily at Indianapolis. After the meal, Capt. John D. Alexander accompanied her north to the Winstandley house where he roomed. Sarah was singing. After saying goodbye to Capt. Alexander, she continued walking north on L St. using her umbrella to shield herself from the weather and making her way back toward her rooming house. She didn't get far. About a block away, an attacker struck. She was dragged nearly 76 feet along the alley into a cab shed where she was bludgeoned to death. Capt. William J. Cook, found her body the following morning. Some people remembered seeing a tall man in a long overcoat the night before. The comprehensive book includes the photos, news coverage and personal notes that Prosecuting Attorney Robert G. Miller recorded from his 1904 files. Deputy Prosecutor Eli B. Stephenson also recorded his thoughts on the case and suggested who he thought the murderer might be.The case remains unsolved.

Book excerpt: In December 2003 the painter Jack Vettriano, a coalminer’s son, met his parents off the train from Scotland on his way to collect an OBE. Over the last few years Vettriano has had a meteoric rise to fame – emerging from the unlikely background of the Scottish coalfields, unknown and untutored, he has become Scotland’s most successful and controversial contemporary artist. Appearing on posters and cards, mugs and umbrellas, prints of his work outsell Van Gogh, Dali and Monet and his paintings have been acquired by celebrities around the world. 'The Singing Butler', Britain's most reproduced painting, fetched a record £744,800 at auction in April 2004. Vettriano’s images have an often mysterious narrative and are a gateway to an alluring yet sinister world. Daylight scenes of heady optimism, painted against backdrops of beaches and racetracks, are counterbalanced by more disquieting canvases of complex night-time liaisons in bars and clubs, bedrooms and ballrooms. Both sexes are clearly styled – the men hard-edged and mysterious, the women seductive and enigmatic. Yet beneath the confident posturing, Vettriano recognizes our inherent human frailty, that there is no victor in the struggle between duplicity and desire. Men and women are ultimately trapped by the machinations of intense love and passion with little control over their destiny. 'Jack Vettriano' presents about thirty new images, as well as some recently surfaced works, plus the best of the paintings previously published in 'Lovers and Other Strangers' and 'Fallen Angels', also by Pavilion. In March 2004 Melvin Bragg’s The South Bank Show broadcast a programme dedicated to Jack entitled Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter. Reissued in smaller user-friendly format.
