Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to evaluate the field performance of five different types of pavement joint sealant materials at five different airports located in varying climatic regions. Each of the sealant materials was installed at all five airport. The same contractor was used to install the sealants at each of the five airports and the same lot number of the various sealants was installed at each airport. The sealants were stored in a temperature controlled warehouse until they were needed at the job site and 100 percent inspection was provided at each airport. These controls helped to minimize any variations in the service life of the sealants that were not material related. Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy were investigated as potential laboratory analysis techniques for joint sealants. The results of the field evaluations indicate the conformance of a sealant material to an appropriate material specification does not automatically signify satisfactory field performance; different types of sealants do perform differently based upon climatic exposure; and no revisions are necessary to procedures listed in the FAA Item P.605 for joint sealing projects. The research delineated the fact that material characterization procedures are needed for pavement joint sealants. These types of procedures could be used in material specifications that would be more indicative of sealant performance.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent progress to develop a performance-based specification for bituminous sealants applied to asphalt concrete (AC) roadways and runways, a performance-based specification for cold-applied joint sealants for Portland cement concrete (PCC) aprons, taxiways, and parking areas has yet to be mapped and developed. Unique in-service conditions exist on these PCC pavements, where sealants are not only exposed to climatic effects and heavy traffic loads, but also to jet fuel and de-icing fluids. Installation and maintenance conditions are also unique in that it is often necessary to install or replace joint sealants at night or in a very short time so that aircraft traffic disruption is avoided. Hence, special consideration must be provided to ascertain that joint sealants are effective and durable. Recent studies on joint and crack sealants used on airport pavements that experience cold climates indicate that current specifications do not necessarily allow for the selection of durable sealants, and therefore sealant failure can be rapid. To address the issue of premature failure and to extend joint sealant service life, the elements of a performance-based specification for cold-applied joint sealants for PCC airport pavements is reviewed. The benefits of such a specification include the selection of joint sealants for specific local needs, reduced airport pavement maintenance costs, and extended airport PCC pavement service life.

Book excerpt: This report on joint sealant materials for concrete pavement repairs is based on conversations with specialists from several states, the Federal Highway Administration, the Portland Cement Association, and the American Concrete Pavement Association, and on a review of the literature. It lightly covers material properties, costs, and the experience with silicones on I-81 over the past few years. Appendix A is a copy of the AASHTO-AGR-ARTBA "Joint and Crack Resealing," Chapter 3, "Guide Procedures for Concrete Pavement 4R Operations," which provides an overview of the resealing of joints and cracks in existing portland cement concrete pavements. Appendix B is a copy of the Georgia Department of Transportation's most recent specifications dealing with silicone joint sealants, which are frequently cited as a model for this material.

This book was released on 1959 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper 1: The performance of sealing materials for sawed joints is being studied by a laboratory test in which the joints are opened and closed at speeds of the order of 1/32 inch per hour. The sealers are applied to sawed joints which are initially 1/8 or 3/16 inch wide and which are usually opened an additional 1/8 inch at 0 F during the tests. Paper 2: 16 laboratories were asked to participate in the evaluation of bond-ductility, flow, and penetration tests for joint sealing compounds. three hot-poured type rubber -asphalt sealants were used in this testing program. the material samples, together with special mortar test blocks for the bond-ductility test, were sent to all participants from one centralized source, the federal specification SS-R-406C procedure was used, emphasizing certain details in order to have the test better controlled.
