Book excerpt: The Joint External Evaluation (JEE) team would like to express its appreciation to the Republic of Azerbaijan for volunteering to conduct a JEE. Azerbaijan's response to COVID-19 and its participation in the JEE and other global public health initiatives have consistently demonstrated Azerbaijan's political commitment, foresight, leadership and accountability in building and maintaining the country's core capacities to implement the IHR. In 2019 Azerbaijan embarked on preparations for the JEE. Preparing for the JEE was then delayed as Azerbaijan prioritized their effort to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic; including strengthening health care capacities to treat COVID-19 cases; increasing vaccination, including implementation of innovative digital systems for vaccination promotion and administration; and enhancing its surveillance system. The JEE team wholeheartedly acknowledges Azerbaijan's voluntary participation in the JEE process and the decision to continue with the evaluation after the pandemic response, appreciates the country's dedicated engagement with the external team and express its gratitude for the warm hospitality and collegiality extended to the team. It is commendable that Azerbaijan and all nations which volunteer to undergo the JEE process demonstrate their unwavering commitment to strengthening global health security.

Book excerpt: During the JEE mission in early December 2023, capacities in 19 technical areas for Armenia were evaluated through a peer-to-peer, consultative process that brought a multi-sectoral group of national subject matter experts together with the multi-national, multi-disciplinary JEE team for a week of discussion, collaboration, and field visits. This process led to consensus on scores and priority actions across the 19 technical areas. Armenia’s commitment to strengthening its IHR core capacities is evident from the decision to undertake a second JEE. Since the first JEE was conducted in August 2016, Armenia has worked hard to develop and improve its public health capabilities and capacities. Like all countries, Armenia was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the national and local pandemic responses revealed areas that can be further strengthened, it is noteworthy that a strong and resilient health sector was able to maintain essential health services, as exemplified by the continuation of commendably high vaccination rates by the national immunization programme. The recent humanitarian crisis arising from the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh resulted in forced displacement of more than 100 thousand refugees with a diversity of health issues serve as a reminder for the need to maintain vigilance and be fully prepared to respond to complex emergencies that require strong collaboration between public health, security and other concerned sectors. Through a careful review of the findings of both the field visits and the plenary and bilateral technical discussions, the external team identified several cross-cutting themes and challenges that impact all 19 technical areas. In view of these findings, four recommendations are proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Health Statistics series is WHO's annual compilation of health statistics for its 194 Member States. The series is produced by the WHO Department of Information, Evidence and Research, and of the Health Systems and Innovation Cluster, in collaboration with all relevant WHO technical departments. World Health Statistics 2017 compiles data on 21 health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets with 35 indicators as well as data on life expectancy. This edition also includes, for the first time, success stories from several countries that are making progress towards the health-related SDG targets. World Health Statistics 2017 is organized into three parts. Part 1 describes six lines of action that WHO is now promoting to help build better systems for health and to achieve the health and health-related SDGs. In Part 2, the status of selected health-related SDG indicators is summarized at both global and regional level based on data available as of early 2017. Part 3 presents a selection of stories that highlight recent successful efforts by countries to improve and protect the health of their populations through one or more of the six lines of action. Annexes A and B present country-level estimates for selected health-related SDG indicators. As in previous years, World Health Statistics 2017 has been compiled primarily using publications and databases produced and maintained by WHO or United Nations groups of which WHO is a member such as the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (IGME). Additionally, a number of statistics have been derived from data produced and maintained by other international organizations such as the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and its Population Division.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s problems are indeed world problems: social and environmental crises, global trade and politics, and major epidemics are making public health a pressing global concern. From this constantly changing scenario, global health diplomacy has evolved, at the intersection of public health, international relations, law, economics, and management—a new discipline with transformative potential. Global Health Diplomacy situates this concept firmly within the human rights dialogue and provides a solid framework for understanding global health issues and their negotiation. This up-to-the-minute guide sets out defining principles and the current agenda of the field, and examines key relationships such as between trade and health diplomacy, and between global health and environmental issues. The processes of global governance are detailed as the UN, WHO, and other multinational actors work to address health inequalities among the world’s peoples. And to ensure maximum usefulness, the text includes plentiful examples, discussion questions, reading lists, and a glossary. Featured topics include: The legal basis of global health agreements and negotiations. Global public goods as a foundation for global health diplomacy. Global health: a human security perspective. Health issues and foreign policy at the UN. National strategies for global health. South-south cooperation and other new models of development. A volume of immediate utility with a potent vision for the future, Global Health Diplomacy is an essential text for public health experts and diplomats as well as schools of public health and international affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Health Statistics series is WHO's annual compilation of health statistics for its 194 Member States. The World Health Statistics 2016focuses on the health and health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and associated targets. It represents an initial effort to bring together available data on SDG health and health-related indicators, providing an assessment of the situation in 2016. The SDG health goal -- ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages -- includes 13 targets, covering all major health priorities, and including the unfinished and expanded Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) agenda, four targets to address noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), mental health, injuries and environmental issues, and four "means of implementation" targets. This report also seeks to demonstrate the critical linkages between health and other SDGs by including indicators of selected health determinants and risk factors in other SDG targets. The series is produced by the WHO Department of Information, Evidence and Research, of the Health Systems and Innovation Cluster. As in previous years, World Health Statistics 2016 has been compiled using publications and databases produced and maintained by WHO technical programs and regional offices. WHO presents World Health Statistics 2016as an integral part of its ongoing efforts to provide enhanced access to comparable high-quality statistics on core measures of population health and national health systems. Unless otherwise stated, all estimates have been cleared following consultation with Member States and are published here as official WHO figures.

This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element tackles the problem of generalization with respect to text-based evidence in the field of literary studies. When working with texts, how can we move, reliably and credibly, from individual observations to more general beliefs about the world? The onset of computational methods has highlighted major shortcomings of traditional approaches to texts when it comes to working with small samples of evidence. This Element combines a machine learning-based approach to detect the prevalence and nature of generalization across tens of thousands of sentences from different disciplines alongside a robust discussion of potential solutions to the problem of the generalizability of textual evidence. It exemplifies the way mixed methods can be used in complementary fashion to develop nuanced, evidence-based arguments about complex disciplinary issues in a data-driven research environment.
