Book excerpt: While the M1 Garand is the iconic US rifle of the WWII era, it had a strong competitor, the Johnson Semi-Automatic. Developed as a possible replacement for the Garand, it addressed several of the drawbacks of the M1: a larger 10-rnd magazine that could be topped up with strippers, the ability to take a vertical external magazine and had a fully automatic light machine gun version as well. This 'handbook' seems to actually be a long form promotional booklet created by Johnson to help promote and sell its virtues to various government customers about the advantages of his rifle vs. the M1 Garand. There is even a section comparing the two point by point. It covers description, a detailed explanation of functioning, operation and disassembly (with diagrams/photos). It is a terrific resource for the historian or for those with in interest in military arms. Of note, the Johnson while not adopted by the US Army was used in small numbers in the early Pacific campaigns by the US Marines, and one USMC Cap. Robert Hugo Dunlap carried one into battle on Iwo Jima, subsequently winning the Medal of Honor based on his actions. This book is a must-have for anyone interested in the Johnson rifle and how it works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of automatic weapons is one of the most significant developments in weapons history. While this development has been filled with disagreements, controversy, and stray hurdles, out of all of this tumult, shouting, and shooting has come the progress in firearms from the days when it was necessary to build a fire under a gun to make it go off to the “you press the button and they do the work” automatic firearms of the present day. In 1941, Melvin M. Johnson Jr. and Charles T. Haven, both well-established experts on firearms and ammunitions in their day, commemorated this development in Automatic Arms: Their History, Development and Use. The topics on which they illuminate the reader include: History and development How they work How to keep them firing How they may be employed in combat In the authors’ foreword, they state, “There has been a great deal of general discussion about various automatic weapons pro and con, and naturally there have been misunderstandings and misinterpretations.” They succeed immensely in their endeavor to clear up misunderstandings and misinterpretations with the clear, concise language they use in discussing this most notable of historical developments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly fifty years the hard-hitting, mobile Browning Automatic Rifle, or BAR, served in US infantry units as a light squad automatic “base of fire” weapon, providing quick bursts of concentrated fire. Designed in World War One, it didn't reach the front until September 1918. In the interwar years US forces used the BAR across the world, from China to Nicaragua. It also became a favorite of notorious gangsters like Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, who prized its ability to punch through police armored cars. At the outset of World War II the US armed forces decided to adapt the BAR for a light machine gun role. The BAR was not without its flaws; it was heavy and difficult to dismantle and reassemble, and it didn't cope well with sustained fire. Nevertheless, the BAR saw action in every major theater of World War II and went on to be used in Korea and in the opening stages of the Vietnam War. Featuring arresting first-hand accounts, specially drawn full-color artwork and close-up photographs, many in color, this lively study offers a vivid portrait of this powerful, long-lived and innovative weapon that saw service with US and other forces across the world for much of the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully illustrated, this absorbing study explores the evolving sniping technology and tactics employed by both sides in Asia and the Pacific during 1941–45. During World War II, both the Japanese and their Allied opponents made widespread use of snipers armed with a variety of rifles, scopes and accessories and prepared by widely differing levels of training and tactical doctrine. The challenges of fighting in a variety of harsh environments, from the Pacific islands to the vast expanses of China, prompted improvisation and innovation on both sides in the ongoing war between snipers and their adversaries. Often operating at relatively close ranges in restrictive terrain, snipers made particularly ingenious use of camouflage and deception as the fighting spread across Asia and the Pacific in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack, while troops tasked with countering enemy marksmen had to learn the hard way how best to defeat a seemingly invisible enemy. Small arms expert John Walter considers the strengths and limitations of the rifles, scopes and accessories deployed by Japanese snipers and their Allied counterparts, as well as their different approaches to sniping tactics and training. Specially commissioned artwork and carefully chosen photographs illustrate this enthralling study of the sniping war in Asia and the Pacific during World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War I's defining weapon for many, Germany's MG 08 machine gun won a formidable reputation on battlefields from Tannenberg to the Somme. Although it was a lethally effective weapon when used from static positions, the MG 08 was far too heavy to perform a mobile role on the battlefield. As the British and French began to deploy lighter machine guns alongside their heavier weapons, the Germans fielded the Danish Madsen and British Lewis as stopgaps, but chose to adapt the MG 08 into a compromise weapon – the MG 08/15 – which would play a central role in the revolutionary developments in infantry tactics that characterized the last months of the conflict. In the 1940s, the two weapons were still in service with German forces fighting in a new world war. Drawing upon eyewitness battlefield reports, this absorbing study assesses the technical performance and combat record of these redoubtable and influential German machine guns, and their strengths and limitations in a variety of battlefield roles.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from United States Rifles and Machine Guns: A Detailed Account of the Methods Used in Manufacturing Turing the Springfield, 1903 Model Service Rifle; Also Descriptions of the Modified Enfield Rifle and Three Types of Machine Guns The accompanying description of the methods used at the Spring field Armory in manufacturing the Springfield, 1903 Model Service Rifle was undertaken at the request of the Ordnance Bureau of the United States Army for the purpose of assisting manufacturers in undertaking large contracts for this arm should necessity arise. The immmiate necessity arrived before this plan could be carried out, but as the Springfield still remains the standard arm of the United States Army, the work remains of value for the future. The methods shown are those in use during the fall of 1916, some of these being since modified in accordance with manufacturing require ments. It is believed that this is the first instance of such an amount of detailed information being gathered into such a small compass where it is so readily available for use. The perspective drawings of oper ations are all from photographs, over 1000 being taken for this purpose. Credit for the plan of securing the material in this form belongs to John H.
