Book excerpt: The world of Threigsinn was shaped by thoughts and abandoned by gods who were ashamed of their folly. Toby Cerezo's debut novel, Sparks of Rebellion, is about a dysfunctional group of teenagers who must untangle their emotions to unite against an oppressive monarchy. Arvin, a young and cynical prodigy, meets an emissary sent by Ferdinand Marioneta, the duke of Sales. The messenger invites him to a masquerade ball with his only friend, Chepha. Their journey quickly becomes much more perilous than a visit to the big city. After encountering a mysterious goddess who tries (and fails) to endear herself to him, Arvin and Chepha are entangled in a plot to stop Ferdinand from seizing control of the human empire and enacting genocide upon elves, orcs, and other so-called Inhumans. As this dire mission looms over Arvin's head, four days of facing long-repressed trauma and teenage angst threaten to reduce his sanity to shreds.

Book excerpt: This novel by Russ Williams presents an apocalyptic view of a small town turned upside-down by a natural disaster. Action and human drama come together to force members of this shaken community to live or die while facing horrific challenges, natural and supernatural. There’s a doctor, a lawyer, a priest, a saloon keeper, a sheriff, a mayor, lovers, young and old, as well as the rich and the poor. All must band together to survive. Here is a preview: The president's voice crackled over the battery-powered radio: "My fellow Americans, I regret bearing such terrible news, but most of our nation is buried beneath snow left by this monumental blizzard. I have declared a state of emergency and martial law, and moved the Congress and executive branch to a provisional government center in Jacksonville, Florida. Much of the rest of our country is covered with fifty or more feet of snow. "I have ordered the U.S. armed services to begin digging out our large cities, but I ask those of you in outlying areas to take heart and have courage. We will try to rescue you as soon as we can and return local and national services to normal, whenever possible. Until then, I ask you, please remain calm and conserve your resources. Help is on the way. I repeat, help is on the way." "But what about us?" the girl screamed. "We're trapped here in the middle of nowhere. How long will it take them to reach us this far up in the mountains? Weeks? Months? Are we all going to die?" A small band of people gathered around the radio and tried to give her comfort, but they had no answers. All they could do was wait—and hope. So begins their time of terror in The Night Hunter—a mysterious tale of adventure and romance in an isolated village haunted by the unknown. To survive, these people have to struggle against the winter forces of nature gone wild. Yet, the ones who live must fight the ultimate battle, against their own weaknesses and desires, as they come face to face with ... The Night Hunter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toby's having a bad day. Since his dad died in an auto accident, it seems that he's having more bad days than good. This particular day has been the worst. His mom has to work on Sundays, so Toby walks to Sunday School and church by himself. And today it's raining. And he's late. And his "good shoes" hurt his feet. Finally, in his rush to get there on time, he forgets his umbrella. His already foul little mood gets worse and worse as he gets into trouble in Sunday School and has to sit in the hall. The Sunday School lesson is about having a personal relationship with Jesus, a subject which has always confused and frustrated Toby. He has no idea what this really means, and at this point he's not even so sure he would want such a relationship. Then comes the icing on the cake, as Toby realizes that in his haste this morning he also forgot his work clothes, the clothes he needs for his regular Sunday afternoon mission work. Overcome by frustration, he picks up a rock and just blindly gives it a fling. Well, you guessed it. Crash! Right through the picture window of the meanest old woman on the block! That's it. Toby's had enough. He's going home. With his head down against the driving rain he's running full-steam across the church playground when Wham!, he runs right into the metal post that holds the basketball net. He comes to in a strange desert land. Instead of his Sunday outfit he finds himself wearing some sort of tunic. His good shoes are gone, replaced by leather thong sandals. As Toby desperately tries to figure out where he is and what has happened to him, he spies a figure in the distance, walking toward him. As the man passes by, he quietly says "Hello, Toby", and then, over his shoulder he simply says "Follow me". Join Toby on a magical and heart-warming journey through first century Palestine as he indeed finds himself in a personal relationship with Jesus, the Christ. Important figures from the New Testament, including Jesus, the twelve Apostles, and others come to life in these pages as Toby experiences first-hand the wonders of Jesus's earthly ministry and the transformational power of God's love.

This leads him to battle his inner demons and question his atheistic attitude. The second story is called Something To Do and features an ordinary man who decides to become a writer. His quotidian task is complicated by slightly obsessive thoughts relating to an old flame. The third story entitled Toby's Little Eden focuses on a strapping young man who is happily dormant and isolated in his beautiful garden in North London but the arrival of a new young housekeeper leads him to reluctantly come out of his shell. Found Wanting is about a man who seeks to gently nudge his wife back into prostitution but is he pushing at an open door? The final story, Carlington Park G.C. is really a series of comical sketches featuring the groundstaff of a new golf course in North Manchester.

Book excerpt: A bestselling modern classic—both poignant and funny—narrated by a fifteen year old autistic savant obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, this dazzling novel weaves together an old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a fascinating excursion into a mind incapable of processing emotions. Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. At fifteen, Christopher’s carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbour’s dog Wellington impaled on a garden fork, and he is initially blamed for the killing. Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer, and turns to his favourite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As Christopher tries to deal with the crisis within his own family, the narrative draws readers into the workings of Christopher’s mind. And herein lies the key to the brilliance of Mark Haddon’s choice of narrator: The most wrenching of emotional moments are chronicled by a boy who cannot fathom emotions. The effect is dazzling, making for one of the freshest debut in years: a comedy, a tearjerker, a mystery story, a novel of exceptional literary merit that is great fun to read.

He calls out to the darkness for someone to listen, help. When all he perceives is silence, he decides that it’s all a joke, a fable. That maybe Karl Marx wasn’t too far off. A djinn and a television program give him the tools to find out for himself, give him the chance to go laugh in someone’s face about it all. Toby lands in the middle of Nazareth of the first century—and meets the young Yeshua ben David. The boy who will one day be known as Jesus. But the closer he gets to the young man, the more he finds that maybe divinity isn't a fairy tale. That in losing his past, Toby just might gain his future. And that finding his faith may be as easy as accepting that he was never really alone to begin with.

Book excerpt: In this #1 New York Times bestselling follow-up to True Believer, a young couple's love faces the ultimate test when the past disrupts the life and family they've built together. There are a few things Jeremy Marsh was sure he'd never do: he'd never leave New York City; never give his heart away again after barely surviving one failed marriage; and, most of all, never become a parent. Now, Jeremy is living in the tiny town of Boone Creek, North Carolina, married to Lexie Darnell, the love of his life, and anticipating the birth of their daughter. But just as his life seems to be settling into a blissful pattern, an unsettling and mysterious message re-opens old wounds and sets off a chain of events that will forever change the course of this young couple's marriage. Dramatic, heartbreaking and surprising, this is a story about the love between a man and a woman and between a parent and a child. More than that, it is a story that beautifully portrays how the same emotion that can break your heart is also the one that will ultimately heal it. While the novel picks up the tale of Lexie Darnell and Jeremy Marsh that started in True Believer and will delight fans of that novel, it stands on its own as one of Nicholas Sparks's most deeply moving love stories.

Book excerpt: A sensational collection of stories of the American experience from the Depression to the aftermath of 9/11, by one of the most gifted American writers of the twentieth century and the author of the acclaimed Rabbit series. John Updike mingles narratives of Pennsylvania with stories of New England suburbia and of foreign travel: “Personal Archaeology” considers life as a sequence of half-buried layers, and “The Full Glass” distills a lifetime’s happiness into one brimming moment of an old man’s bedtime routine. High-school class reunions, in “The Walk with Elizanne” and “The Road Home,” restore their hero to youth’s commonwealth where, as the narrator of the title story confides, “the self I value is stored, however infrequently I check on its condition.” Exotic locales encountered in the journeys of adulthood include Morocco, Florida, Spain, Italy, and India. The territory of childhood, with its fundamental, formative mysteries, is explored in “The Guardians,” “The Laughter of the Gods,” and “Kinderszenen.” Love’s fumblings among the bourgeoisie yield the tart comedy of “Free,” “Delicate Wives,” “The Apparition,” and “Outage.”

Book excerpt: The freezing winds off Lake Michigan swept across the snow laden grounds and through the cracks of a building that held southern prisoners in Camp Douglas, Illinois. Huddled with the other prisoners, John mulled over the reasons he had enlisted, even after his father had forbidden it. He knew the only real reason was to protect his best friend Frankie, who had enlisted first but never even bothered to show up at the station when the recruits left for war. Shivering, he wondered if he would ever see his family again and especially the girl he had loved since childhood. John realized that nothing but an act of God could deliver him from this hell on earth. The year was 1864. The Messenger combines the history of the Civil War, the love of family, and faith that holds on to miracles. Author Johnny Neil Smith paints a vivid picture of struggles, belief, fear, and hope wrapped into one fascinating story of how angels still minister and bring courage to those who trust in God. 'Smith's command of the era's politics and history and his feel for Southern family relationships make this tale an above-par work of period fiction.' -Publisher's Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre in Dublin,1745–1820: A Calendar of Performances is the first comprehensive, daily compendium of more than 18,000 performances that took place in Dublin’s many professional theatres, music halls, pleasure gardens, and circus amphitheatres between Thomas Sheridan’s becoming the manager at Smock Alley Theatre in 1745 and the dissolution of the Crow Street Theatre in 1820. The daily performance calendar for each of the seventy-five seasons recorded here records and organizes all surviving documentary evidence pertinent to each evening’s entertainments, derived from all known sources, but especially from playbills and newspaper advertisements. Each theatre’s daily entry includes all preludes, mainpieces, interludes, and afterpieces with casts and assigned roles, followed by singing and singers, dancing and dancers, and specialty entertainments. Financial data, program changes, rehearsal notices, authorship and premiere information are included in each component’s entry, as is the text of contemporary correspondence and editorial contextualization and commentary, followed by other additional commentary, such as the many hundreds of printed puffs, notices, and performance reviews. In the cases of the programs of music halls, pleasure gardens, and circuses, the playbills have generally been transcribed verbatim. The calendar for each season is preceded by an analytical headnote that presents several categories of information including, among other things, an alphabetical listing of all members of each company, whether actors, musicians, specialty artists, or house servants, who are known to have been employed at each venue. Limited biographical commentary is included, particularly about performers of Irish origin, who had significant stage careers but who did not perform in London. Each headnote presents the seasons’s offerings of entertainments of each theatrical type (prelude, mainpiece, interlude, afterpiece) analyzed according to genre, including a list of the number of plays in each genre and according to period in which they were first performed. The headnote also notes the number of different plays by Shakespeare staged during each season and gives particular attention to entertainments of “special Irish interest.” The various kinds of benefit performance and command performances are also noted. Finally, this Calendar of Performances contains an appendix that furnishes a season-by-season listing of the plays that were new to the London patent theatres, and, later, of the important “minors.” This information is provided in order for us to understand the interrelatedness of the London and Dublin repertories.
