Book Synopsis The French Revolution as Blasphemy by : William L. Pressly
Download or read book The French Revolution as Blasphemy written by William L. Pressly and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Pressly presents for the first time a close analysis of two important, neglected paintings, arguing that they are among the most extraordinary works of art devoted to the French Revolution. Johan Zoffany's Plundering the King's Cellar at Paris, August 10, 1792, and Celebrating over the Bodies of the Swiss Soldiers, both painted in about 1794, represent events that helped turn the English against the Revolution. Pressly places both paintings in their historical context—a time of heightened anti-French hysteria—and relates them to pictorial conventions: contemporary history painting, the depiction of urban mobs in satiric and festival imagery, and Hogarth's humorous presentation of modern moral subjects, all of which Zoffany adopted and reinvented for his own purposes. Pressly relates the paintings to Zoffany's status as a German-born Catholic living in Protestant England and to Zoffany's vision of revolutionary justice and the role played by the sansculottes, women, and blacks. He also examines the religious dimension in Zoffany's paintings, showing how they broke new ground by conveying Christian themes in a radically new format. Art historians will find Pressly's book of immense value, as will cultural historians interested in religion, gender, and race.

Book Synopsis Artists and Migration 1400-1850 by : Jessica David
Download or read book Artists and Migration 1400-1850 written by Jessica David and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a thematic exploration of the migrant artist’s experience in Europe and its colonies from the early modern period through to the Industrial Revolution. The influence of the transient artist, both on their adoptive country as well as their own oeuvre and native culture, is considered through a collection of essays arranged according to geographic location. The contributions here examine the impetuses behind artistic migrations and the status of the foreign artist at home and abroad through the patterns of patronage, contemporary responses to their work and the preservation of their artistic legacy in domestic and foreign settings. Objects and sites from across the visual arts are considered as evidence of the migrant artist’s experience; talismans of cultural exchange that yielded hybrid artistic styles and disseminated foreign tastes and workshop practices across the globe.
Book Synopsis Paul Mellon's Legacy by : John Baskett
Download or read book Paul Mellon's Legacy written by John Baskett and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Mellon (1907--1999) was an unparalleled collector of British art. His collection, now at Yale in the museum and study center he founded to house it, rivals those in Britain’s national museums and is unquestionably the most comprehensive representation of British art held outside of the United Kingdom. This book and the exhibition that it accompanies celebrate the centenary of his birth. Five introductory essays examine Mellon’s extraordinary collecting activity, as well as his role in creating both the Yale Center for British Art and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London as gifts to his alma mater (Yale 1929). A lavishly illustrated catalogue section showcases 148 of the most exquisite and important paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, sculpture, rare books, and manuscript material in the Yale Center’s collection, including major works by Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, John Constable, and J. M. W. Turner.
