Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Knox and the Scottish Reformation The times in which the lot of John Knox was cast were among the most stirring in the history of Scotland. The wave of Protestant enthusiasm which had already swept over many parts of Europe, had reached Scotland before the time when the Great Reformer had attained the years of manhood. Just as the clergy abroad had lost the respect of the people through their excesses, so the clergy of Scotland had done much by their arbitrary and immoral conduct to precipitate the revolution in which Knox bore so conspicuous a part. By the year 1525, Lutheran books were so widely read in Scotland that an Act of Parliament was passed forbidding their importation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Knox: The Hero of the Scottish Reformation To have omitted John Knox from a series of Heroes of the Reformation would have been an unpardonable exclusion; and the year accepted by British and American Churches (whether rightly or wrongly) for the Quater-centenary commemoration of his birth, appeared to be the most appropriate time for the issue of this volume. The author acknowledges his indebtedness to earlier labourers in the same field; and his sources are given in the accompanying list. In that list (apart, of course, from what was written during or soon after the Reformer's own century), three works are of special value. The Life of Knox, by Rev. Dr. McCrie, published nearly a century ago, signally revived the interest not only of Scotland but of Christendom in the Reformer, and vindicated his name from many unjust imputations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Knox and the Reformation In this brief Life of Knox I have tried, as much as I may, to get behind Tradition, which has so deeply affected even modern histories of the Scottish Reformation, and even recent Biographies of the Reformer. The tradition is based, to a great extent, on Knox's own "History," which I am therefore obliged to criticise as carefully as I can. In his valuable John Knox, a Biography, Professor Hume Brown says that in the "History" "we have convincing proof alike of the writer's good faith, and of his perception of the conditions of historic truth." My reasons for dissenting from this favourable view will be found in the following pages. If I am right, if Knox, both as a politician and an historian, resembled Charles I. in "sailing as near the wind" as he could, the circumstance (as another of his biographers remarks) "only makes him more human and interesting." Opinion about Knox and the religious Revolution in which he took so great a part, has passed through several variations in the last century. In the Edinburgh Review of 1816 (No. liii. pp. 163-180), is an article with which the present biographer can agree. Several passages from Knox's works are cited, and the reader is expected to be "shocked at their principles." They are certainly shocking, but they are not, as a rule, set before the public by biographers of the Reformer. Mr. Carlyle introduced a style of thinking about Knox which may be called platonically Puritan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This volume in the popular Armchair series presents a short and reader-friendly introduction to the tumultuous life and theology of the fiery reformer John Knox. As leader of the Scottish Reformation, Knox notably came into conflict with the Roman Catholic Church, particularly Queen Mary. He was also an outspoken advocate for education and care for the poor, and is widely regarded as the founder of the Church of Scotland. Each chapter includes a description of Knox's activities as well as a discussion of key texts that introduce Knox's theological convictions. Expertly written by Suzanne McDonald, and featuring witty illustrations from Ron Hill, this book offers an intriguing introduction to the life and work of this major theological figure.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of the Scottish Church at the Reformation As the life of John Knox has been so Often written, I had some misgivings as to whether he should appear here for separate treatment, but it was impossible to exclude him - the greatest Of them all, and incalculably influencing all the others. I have not, however, in his case given a biography, but, as stated in the text, have selected certain incidents in his career, features in his character, and aspects of truth he emphasised, which are closely related to the work Of reform. I have also laid stress on his modern Spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Rise and Development of Presbyterianism in Scotland Throughout the whole history of the Reformed Church in Scotland one of the most outstanding features will be found to be the overwhelming desire to maintain the independence of the Church from all secular control, and the most characteristic feature of the disputes which went on during the reigns of the Stewart Kings (especially James VI and I, and Charles I), was the failure of those Monarchs to appreciate the Scottish sentiments Of Patriotism, Protestantism and Freedom. Book excerpt: This readable, accessible narrative story of the Protestant Reformation is written for lay audiences. It is part of the popular Westminster John Knox Press Armchair series and is illustrated with memorable cartoons by Ron Hill. The chapters of the book are suitable for use in church adult education settings to provide a solid grounding in the history of the Reformation and its leading ideas. Questions for discussion and suggestions for further reading provided for each chapter make this book great for group study. Since the Protestant Reformation is such a formative event in the lives of churches, it is important to have an accessible resource to tell its story available for laypersons in all denominations. Written by experts but designed for the nonexpert, the Armchair series provides accurate, concise, and witty overviews of some of the most profound moments and theologians in Christian history. These books are an essential supplement for first-time encounters with primary texts, a lucid refresher for scholars and clergy, and an enjoyable read for the theologically curious.
