Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Knox and the Reformation In this brief Life of Knox I have tried, as much as I may, to get behind Tradition, which has so deeply affected even modern histories of the Scottish Reformation, and even recent Biographies of the Reformer. The tradition is based, to a great extent, on Knox's own "History," which I am therefore obliged to criticise as carefully as I can. In his valuable John Knox, a Biography, Professor Hume Brown says that in the "History" "we have convincing proof alike of the writer's good faith, and of his perception of the conditions of historic truth." My reasons for dissenting from this favourable view will be found in the following pages. If I am right, if Knox, both as a politician and an historian, resembled Charles I. in "sailing as near the wind" as he could, the circumstance (as another of his biographers remarks) "only makes him more human and interesting." Opinion about Knox and the religious Revolution in which he took so great a part, has passed through several variations in the last century. In the Edinburgh Review of 1816 (No. liii. pp. 163-180), is an article with which the present biographer can agree. Several passages from Knox's works are cited, and the reader is expected to be "shocked at their principles." They are certainly shocking, but they are not, as a rule, set before the public by biographers of the Reformer. Mr. Carlyle introduced a style of thinking about Knox which may be called platonically Puritan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Knox: The Hero of the Scottish Reformation To have omitted John Knox from a series of Heroes of the Reformation would have been an unpardonable exclusion; and the year accepted by British and American Churches (whether rightly or wrongly) for the Quater-centenary commemoration of his birth, appeared to be the most appropriate time for the issue of this volume. The author acknowledges his indebtedness to earlier labourers in the same field; and his sources are given in the accompanying list. In that list (apart, of course, from what was written during or soon after the Reformer's own century), three works are of special value. The Life of Knox, by Rev. Dr. McCrie, published nearly a century ago, signally revived the interest not only of Scotland but of Christendom in the Reformer, and vindicated his name from many unjust imputations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of the Scottish Church at the Reformation As the life of John Knox has been so Often written, I had some misgivings as to whether he should appear here for separate treatment, but it was impossible to exclude him - the greatest Of them all, and incalculably influencing all the others. I have not, however, in his case given a biography, but, as stated in the text, have selected certain incidents in his career, features in his character, and aspects of truth he emphasised, which are closely related to the work Of reform. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Knox: His Ideas and Ideals Ample acknowledgments are due not only to the standard work of Dr. M'crie and the solid volumes of Dr. Hume Brown, but also to the slighter sketches by Mrs. M'cunn, Mr. Taylor Innes, and the late Dr. W. M. Taylor of New York, each of which has its own special charm. Upon john Knox's House and the translation into modern English Of T he Hz'sz'ory of Ike Reformation much affectionate and successful labour has been bestowed by Mr. Charles J. Guthrie. The lecture in Carlyle's Heroes, though brief, was epoch-making; there is a fine touch in the late R. W. Barbour's chapter in The Evangelical Succession and R. L. Stevenson's essays in Men and Books is fresh and suggestive. But it is to Dr. David Laing's six volumes of Knox's Works that the reader must turn who desires to see Knox face to face; and it is to this conscientious editor's immortal labours that I have to express the deepest debt of gratitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Knox and His Times In 1521, at the age of sixteen, Knox was sent from the grammar school of Haddington to Glasgow Uni versity, where he studied Aristotle and school divinity. Greek was not then taught in Scotland: the first public school into which it was introduced was that of Mon trose, under the care of Erskine of Dun, in 1534; and it was not until 1560, after the establishment of the Reformation, that John Row, the Protestant minister of Perth, opened a school for Hebrew. So late as 1550, Knox lamented his ignorance of Hebrew, for which knowledge, he says, he had a fervent thirst. He learned both Greek and Hebrew on the Continent.
