Excerpt: ...quaint and square-shouldered, for whom I turned mechanical knowledge to account; of Mathew Smith, the Quaker client, who gave me my first trustee business, one of the kindest, truest and best of men, whose wife, surviving him many years and dying at a good old age, was a woman of remarkable intelligence, and fit mate for such a husband; of Barrett, the shipping master, who swore by me, because he found I knew the nomenclature of a ship from truck to keelson, and drew one to aid him in his explanation of a case of assault and battery he brought to me; of Charles Howard of S., the tobacconist, who from being my client became my student, and learned Latin well, while he rolled cigars with a grammar open before him--dead now, and the children even of many of them passed away. "At one time during my student life and early practice, I had some temptation to turn my attention to literature as a profession. I had, as already said, written upon more than one subject, and found little difficulty in slinging words together. Among other things that came from my pen were three tales published in successive years in the Atlantic Souvenir--"The Esmeralda/ founded upon the capture of the vessel of that name by Lord Cochrane, in the harbor of Callao; 'The Mortgage;' and 'Giles Hetherby, ' the last two being purely imaginative. My nom de plume was 'Godfrey Wallace, ' a signature that I adopted for some rhymes that the Atlantic Souvenir contained, the most pretentious of which had some little credit given to it and was called the "Bower of Paphos," being written to suit an engraving so named that was sent to inspire me. Had I been willing to work in the same way, I would have found, I think, a good deal of employment in penny-a-line literature. Luckily, ...

Book Synopsis The Captain Who Burned His Ships by : Gordon S Brown
Download or read book The Captain Who Burned His Ships written by Gordon S Brown and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography of Captain Thomas Tingey, a seminal figure in the early development of the U.S. Navy. It is at the same time a biography of this important American naval figure and a history of the first quarter century of the Washington Navy Yard, which Tingey commanded for that period. It is also the story of the transition of the navy from an object of partisan discord, to an honored and beloved defender of a growing and increasingly self-confident young nation. Tingey, who came to America after a short service in the Royal Navy, contributed importantly to the success of the navy in the War of 1812 and left a legacy of naval service which many of his descendants have followed. The Captain Who Burned His Ships is designed to fill a blank in popular histories of the 19th century American navy, which have been centered on the exploits of the heroes of the Barbary campaigns and the War of 1812. It looks at the development of the navy through its construction and logistical components, in which the Washington yard and Tingey played an important role. It looks at Tingey’s contributions to the development of yard procedures and practices, his civic role in the budding city of Washington, and the tragic events of 1814, when he was forced to burn his own creation to save it from falling into British hands

Book Synopsis The Supreme Court in United States History by : Charles Warren
Download or read book The Supreme Court in United States History written by Charles Warren and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Supreme Court in United States History is a three-volume history of the U.S. Supreme Court, detailing its establishment, the major cases reviewed and decided by the Court, the historical events surrounding cases and decisions, and the effects that Supreme Court decisions had on the public. Author Charles Warren often references newspaper and magazine articles and letters in an attempt to capture the spirit of the times. Written with one eye on the Court and one eye on people, The Supreme Court in United States History was "an attempt to revivify the important cases decided by the Court and to picture the Court itself from year to year in its contemporary setting." Volume I describes Supreme Court History from 1789 to 1821, including the establishment of the first courts and the circuit, state sovereignty and neutrality, The Mandamus Case, impeachment and treason, Pennsylvania and Georgia against the Court, The Bank of the United States, and various Chief Justices throughout this time period. CHARLES WARREN (1868-1954) was an American legal historian and lawyer. Warren graduated from Harvard University and Harvard Law School, and received his Doctorate from Columbia University. In 1894, he founded the Immigration Restriction League with fellow Harvard graduates Prescott Hall and Robert DeCourcy Ward. He authored several legal history books, including A History of the American Bar, The Supreme Court in United States History, and The Making of the Constitution, and won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1923. Warren was the Assistant Attorney General from 1914 to 1918 during Woodrow Wilson's Presidency and drafted the Espionage Act of 1917.
