This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John Deane of Nottingham: Historic Adventures by Land and Sea" is a book of adventures of John Deane, a person who, according to the author, really existed. John lived a life full of events, achievements, and travels – he went a path from a poor drover around London to the position of the British Consul, which he obtained after serving Peter the Great on a Russian warship. Although John Deane of Nottingham is perceived more like a fictional personage, there is proof his story is real. In the quiet churchyard in the village of Wilford near Nottingham, there is his tomb with an inscription: "After life's fitful fever, he sleeps well."

Its pristine glories since the days when bold Robin Hood and his merrie men held sway within its borders, and levied taxes from the passers-by, had sadly dwindled even in the year 1696, when our history commences. The woodman's axe had been busy and the plough had gone over the land, and mansions and homesteads had arisen where once flourished the monarchs of the forest, and the huntsman's horn had been wont to sound amid sequestered glades; still many a wide stretch of woodland and moorland remained, over which the fallow deer roamed at freedom, and rows of far-spreading trees overhung various by-paths green and narrow winding in all directions, and shaded the king's highway which ran north to York and south to the ancient and pleasant town of Nottingham. And there were likewise majestic avenues leading to the abodes of nobles and squires, and thick copses and scattered groves, above which rose the hoary giants of ancient days; and by the borders of the streams and rivulets which find their way into the Trent numberless trees had been allowed to stand. Wide strips also of grass-land were to be found running even with the road or between different estates, extending sometimes in an unbroken line for several miles together, with oaks and elms and beeches stretching out their umbrageous branches to meet from either side, and preserving by their shade the soft velvet of the turf even during the heats of summer. Thus the old forest trees, if marshalled in close order, would have formed a wood of no inconsiderable magnitude.

Book Synopsis The Shipwreck Cannibals by : Adam Nightingale
Download or read book The Shipwreck Cannibals written by Adam Nightingale and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long forgotten tale gets a new life as this book reveals the true story of the 18th-century shipwreck cannibalism scandalDuring the fierce winter of 1710, 14 Englishmen had taken refuge on Boon Island, a sparse 100-yard long stretch of rock, without food or adequate shelter, uncertain of when or if they would be rescued. They endured for 24 days. An attempt to escape failed and four men died. Facing starvation, their captain, John Dean, gave the order to butcher and eat a member of the crew. Dean's decision fended off starvation and sustained his crew until rescue. John Dean first emerged an unlikely hero, but soon thereafter an alternative version of events began to circulate. The First Mate painted Dean as a murderous fraudster, tyrant, and an enthusiastic consumer of human flesh. Centering on the scandal that defined him, this book tells the forgotten story of John Dean; criminal, mercenary, gentleman, diplomat, and cannibal.

Download or read book Wreck of the Nottingham Galley written by John Deane and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wreck of the Nottingham Galley describes one of the most infamous and controversial shipwrecks of all time. The merchant vessel crashed on Boon Island, off the coast of York, Maine, in December 1710, and men were stranded there for so long that they began to cannibalize each other. The survivors were eventually rescued, and the captain published his story, depicting himself as a hero, whereas the crew published a conflicting account, portraying him as a villain. This documentary history includes five of the earliest and most significant histories of the shipwreck: Captain John Deane's original account; the crew's rebuttal; Cotton Mather's rendition; a sensationalized, anonymous narrative; and John Deane's expanded final account. All documents are carefully edited, backed by extensive reader's notes, and accompanied by a critical introduction.
