Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joey the Dreamer: A Tale of Clay Court It All began through a letter that was awaiting me upon my return to the city after two months spent in close association with trout, bass, pines, and other desirable things of the North in summer time. It was the year 19 -, a year of a Presidential election. The letter was from the secretary of the Society for the Improvement of Civic and Commercial Conditions in the City, and it announced a meeting Monday, the third, eight P. M., at the club. My attendance was particularly desired; there was a matter which was certain to develop to my interest. Could I come? A glance at the calendar showed that it was Monday, the third, and the clock showed seven forty-five. I had come back just in time; nothing remained but to call a cab and bid the man hurry. The Society was sitting in comfortable state, the small of its various backs resting solidly on the seats of the big club chairs. It was a notable gathering. There was, first of all, Dicky Clews, the youngest and the richest of them all. Then came the ex-minister to Austria. Seated beside him was the senator's brother, and the man whose money had bought the senator's seat, and who controlled him to his last opinion. Book excerpt: Known as the "only living Father of Confederation" in his lifetime, Joey Smallwood was an entertaining, crafty, and controversial politician in Canada for decades. Born in Gambo, Newfoundland, Joseph ("Joey") Smallwood (1900–1991) spent his life championing the worth and potential of his native province. Although he was a successful journalist and radio personality, Smallwood is best known for his role in bringing Newfoundland into Confederation with Canada in 1949, believing that such an action would secure an average standard of living for Newfoundlanders. He was rightfully dubbed the "only living Father of Confederation" in his lifetime and was premier of the province for twenty-three years. During much of the last part of the twentieth century, Smallwood remained a prominent player in the story of Newfoundland and Labrador’s growth as a province. Later in life he put himself in debt in order to complete his Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, the only project of its kind in Canada up to that point. In Joey Smallwood: Schemer and Dreamer, Ray Argyle reexamines the life of this incredible figure in light of Newfoundland’s progress in recent years, and measures his vision against its new position as a province of prosperity rather than poverty.

Book excerpt: The Always Faithful part of the title has arisen from the Marine Corps motto Semper Fidelis. Always Faithful: A Marine's Tale gives a realistic view of the anguish a young person endures in becoming a United States Marine, as well as the trauma of war. The story also helps the reader understand a certain Italian faction, as well as the Italian-American culture as it pertains to the Goomba perspective. It is not a story about the Marine Corps, nor a story about the Mob. It is simply about an eighteen year old young man of Italian descent from Trenton, New Jersey whose life is touched by both. For this teen, there is more to life than the customary demands placed on people his age. These demands put him on a rollercoaster ride destined to resolve uncertainty. Peer pressure sets the main character, Joseph Mommalione on a journey, which tests, his honor in the Marines, loyalty to strong Italian family traditions, and ability to bear confinement. Joe Momma's year long venture before, during, and after the 1991 Gulf War shows the way to heroism, imprisonment, vengeance, and love. He goes from the typical teen back on the block to the traumatic experience of Marine boot camp, to the theatre of war where his few days of combat lead to heroism and everlasting friendship with two Marines. After the war, he and his comrades are recuperating from their wounds back in New Jersey while Joe Momma is being groomed into his uncle's crime family. Circumstances land Joe Momma in the county jail where he is threatened by the FBI to reveal information about his mob connections. Rather than face three to five years in the Trenton State Penitentiary, he plans and successfully completes a daring escape from jail with the help of the two former Marines and his mentor Carmine Scalia, who is also a former Marine. Before he blends into the criminal underworld, he seeks revenge on the cop who put him behind bars. In doing so, he discovers a plot by a Tucci Crime Family crew boss to destroy him. Although the story portrays an adolescent from Trenton, New Jersey, it is targeted toward a mature audience and will touch the hearts of men and women alike. While the book is Marine hardcore, as well as street savvy, it is sensitive to family values and portrays heroic deeds. The book is easy reading, full of wit, sorrow, happiness, conflict, compassion, romance, crime, and adventure including a twist which will capture one's interest from beginning to end.
