Book excerpt: Joel befriends a gentle old man, named Mr. Walt, who invites Joel into his home to view the many artifacts Mr. Walt has collected throughout his lifetime. Each relic tells of a story that takes place from the many historical events that have shaped our world. This book takes Joel on a journey thorough time, the period reflecting on the Holocaust. Joel hears encounters from a young Jewish boy who experienced firsthand what it was like growing up Jewish and living in Germany during the reign of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime. Learning about Davids memoirs, Joel finds himself concerned for his friend Noah, who is also Jewish, and being harassed by some boys in school. Joel feels the only solution for his friend Noah is to avenge the boys who are bullying him. All the while, listening to Davids horrible experiences, Joel thinks David should also retaliate on the Germans. Join Joel as he takes on a journey from the past while experiencing problems of the present and learns to rely on Gods Amazing Grace for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsomely illustrated book is the first monograph devoted to the work of Joel Perlman (b. 1943), an acclaimed sculptor in steel and bronze, whose works are represented in the permanent collections of America's top museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Perlman's best works from the 1970s to the present day — from the austerely abstract Chevy Short (For Jeannie Day), shown at the 1973 Whitney Biennial, to the lyrical Sky Spirit, a monumental commission completed in 2004 — are depicted in here in stunning full-page photographs, most in full color. All readers with an interest in contemporary sculpture will appreciate not only the book's striking illustrations but also its thoughtfully written text, which relates Perlman's art to his life. Author Philip F. Palmedo, drawing on extensive interviews with his subject and his subject's colleagues, engagingly describes how each chapter of Perlman's life — from his early days of teaching alongside Kenneth Noland and Jules Olitski in the Bennington College art department to his struggle, ultimately very successful, to establish himself in SoHo's vibrant 1970s art scene — served to strengthen his commitment to his own abstract, Modernist aesthetic. This thoughtful narrative, which seamlessly synthesizes Perlman's intimate art-world anecdotes and Palmedo's own keen critical observations, is beautifully complemented by an insightful foreword by renowned art dealer André Emmerich, whose gallery represented Perlman for twenty years.

Book excerpt: “IT’S ONLY MAKE BELIEVE IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE”™ Journeys of the Immortal begins in Ash, which follow the travels of Sam, a twelve-year-old girl, who is having to grow up faster than she should as she comes face-to-face with legendary creatures once thought to be only myths. Sam quickly learns that magic is not just for other realms but is a reality on Earth as well. Their first trip since her mother died 18 months earlier, Sam is reclusive and uninterested in her dad's work. Jack, a Bigfoot expert, drags his disbelieving daughter on a field expedition to the Arizona forest, accompanied by his best friend Charlie, an alien hunter, and his three sons: Chris, Tommy, and Eli. Sam soon discovers a cave containing a nest of unknown origin, and upon showing her dad, it’s thought to be evidence of Bigfoot. Charlie dismisses the discovery and spirals out of control, insisting the evidence points is extraterrestrial. In his greed, he sabotages Jack's work, but not before Sam discovers that neither Bigfoot or aliens are responsible for the nest. What lies inside makes Sam a believer in all things magic. Charlie, upon learning the truth about the cave and nest, does everything in his power to capture the elusive creature named Ash, but is met with resistance by the rest of the group. Sam stops at nothing to ensure Ash’s safety and help him return home from the mortal realm while learning to control her newfound powers, and her blossoming feelings for Tommy.

Book excerpt: Joel found out that Barafu is the Swahili word for ice. Feeling the bitter cold clinging to his body, Joel had no doubt the locals knew what they were talking about. As they were hiking closer to the summit, the air was definitely chilly and thinner. It took a lot of strength and determination to move each foot. Joels leg muscles were aching with pain, mainly, because he was exhausted from lack of sleep, and his body trying to fight off the harsh cold. His breathing was becoming more labored as the climb was ascending higher and higher, with little oxygen to take in. Joel kept thinking to himself, This is harder than I thought! Why did I even want to climb this mountain? I read all of the facts, but no one prepared me for such challenges. I almost wish I had stayed at one of the other camps. NO!!!!! I can do this, I think? With each step, the trail was becoming very steep. When Joel decides to take a chance to climb the majestic mountain Kilimanjaro in Tanzania Africa, he encounters all kinds of challenges, wild animals, harsh weather conditions, but mostly fear! Through each hardship, though, Joel finds courage and strength. A courage that can only be found when one has a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Gelston and Carroll R.’s introduction to and concise commentary on Joel, Amos, and Obadiah. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once before God called out a people to be His special people and a priestly nation before the world. Now again God has called out people to be His and walk before Him as an example to all peoples, calling the people of the world to Him. Now as then He is ingathering us from the far country to which we had wandered and setting us on our betrothal journey home. We can discern much from the first such journey of ingathering that can assist and encourage us as we set out on our own journey of ingathering. This is one persons look at what God has told us about our Tabernacles and what to expect and watch for along the way. It is a walk through Gods Word, searching to see the intent and symbolism contained in the Tabernacle/Temple structure, decorations and rituals with an eye to how these thing might apply to us today. For we have been told that our bodies are now the temple or tabernacle of the Holy Spirit and God has told us previously His specifications for maintaining this space properly so that when we go to Him, He can be found. This book looks at what was lost when man was banished at the beginning; as this is what will be restored at the end times. From there a look was taken at what was elaborated in His Word about Gods purpose, requirements and expectations via the Covenants, Prophets and Law. The last section concentrates on the Tabernacle, its specifications, attendants and Feast Day. For today each of us is now serving as priest before the presence of the Holy Spirit within us.

Book excerpt: In the 1920s, Karl Amson Joel and his wife Meta founded a mail-order linen goods company in Nuremberg, Germany. The business flourished, and it could have turned out to be a picture-book success story, were it not for the coming to power of Adolf Hitler. To escape the Nazis, the Jewish couple and their son Helmut fled first to Berlin and then on to Switzerland. The linen goods company was snapped up by department-store 'king' Josef Neckermann at basement price. A further hazardous journey then took the Joels to Cuba and, finally, to New York. Helmut married a young girl from Brooklyn and, in 1949, she gave birth to their son William Martin, known as 'Billy'. When the marriage fell apart, Helmut returned alone to Germany, re-married and had a second son, Alexander, now an internationally sought-after conductor. Billy Joel is one of the most successful solo artists in the world of international pop music, having sold over 100 million albums. His daughter Alexa Ray has also carved out a career for herself in music. In order to write this extensive biography, Steffen Radlmaier not only researched archives and analyzed specialist literature and interviews, over a period of many years he also conducted personal interviews with numerous family members, acquaintances and contemporary witnesses. He visited Billy Joel and his daughter in New York in the autumn of 2008.

The Journey Isn’t Over warmly invites us to discover how these psalms can help us navigate through trials such as suffering, insecurity, slander, and family problems. These reflective devotionals help us experience more fully the blessings of worship and family life, finding forgiveness, cherished memories, and loving unity. Included in this unique devotional commentary are incisive questions for thought and reflection. Isaac Watt’s metrical versions of the psalms in each chapter encourage readers to offer God a great doxology of praise.

This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our objective is to publish a book that lays out the theoretical constructs and research methodologies within mathematics education that have been developed by Paul Cobb and explains the process of their development. We propose to do so by including papers in which Cobb introduced new theoretical perspectives and methodologies into the literature, each preceded by a substantive accompanying introductory paper that explains the motivation/rationale for developing the new perspectives and/or methodologies and the processes through which they were developed, and Cobb’s own retrospective comments. In this way the book provides the reader with heretofore unpublished material that lays out in considerable detail the issues and problems that Cobb has confronted in his work, that, from his viewpoint, required theoretical and methodological shifts/advances and provides insight into how he has achieved the shifts/advances. The result will be a volume that, in addition to explaining Cobb’s contributions to the field of mathematics education, also provides the reader with insight into what is involved in developing an aggressive and evolving research program. When Cobb confronts problems and issues in his work that cannot be addressed using his existing theories and frameworks, he looks to other fields for theoretical inspiration. A critical feature of Cobb’s work is that in doing so, he consciously appropriates and adapts ideas from these other fields to the purpose of supporting processes of learning and teaching mathematics; He does not simply accept the goals or motives of those fields. As a result, Cobb reconceptualizes and reframes issues and concepts so that they result in new ways of investigating, exploring, and explaining phenomena that he encounters in the practical dimensions of his work, which include working in classrooms, with teachers, and with school systems. The effect is that the field of mathematics education is altered. Other researchers have found his "new ways of looking" useful to them. And they, in turn, adapt these ideas for their own use. The complexity of many of the ideas that Cobb has introduced into the field of mathematics education can lead to a multiplicity of interpretations by practitioners and by other researchers, based on their own experiential backgrounds. Therefore, by detailing the development of Cobb’s work, including the tensions involved in coming to grips with and reconciling apparently contrasting perspectives, the book will shed additional light on the processes of reconceptualization and thus help the reader to understand the reasons, mechanisms, and outcomes of researchers’ constant pursuit of new insights.

Theystarted to creak as they carried their luggage, and all that went through his mind was that they would collapse if he also climbed those steps. Where he came from, all the steps were made of either marble or granite. How in the world would these wooden stairs hold up? Ralph had been surrounded by the unpolluted blue Mediterranean that reflected the ever present blue sky. If the temperature became too hot, he cooled off in that blue water to his heart’s content. Now, in the bowels of the South Bronx, the only thing that turned blue was his demeanor. His only relief from the stifling summer heat, along with some of the boys from the neighborhood, would be to illegallyopen a fire hydrant when the police were not around.

But you ought to say please to me, ’cause mother says——” “All right then. Please look and see if she’s there,” begged Vi, otherwise Violet Bunker. There were six of the little Bunkers. The other four will be out presently. Margy, who had been looking at picture books with her year-older sister in a room off the porch, kindly dropped her book and started for the door. “If she’s there bring her in—please.” Violet laughed a little as she added the last word. She remembered what Margy had started to say about politeness. Violet was piling up the books, for she had just thought of something new to play, when Margy came hurrying back into the room. “She isn’t there!” gasped the smaller Bunker girl. “She isn’t?” Violet fairly gasped out the words, and you could easily tell that she was very much excited. “Are you sure, Margy?” “No, she isn’t there, Vi! Maybe a tramp has taken her!” “Oh!” cried Violet, in such a loud voice that Mrs. Bunker, having heard part of the talk, came quickly from the room where she had been sewing. “Who’s gone?” demanded the mother of the six little Bunkers. “Don’t tell me Mun Bun is lost again!” Mun Bun was the youngest of the six little Bunkers. His real name was Munroe Ford Bunker, but that was entirely too long for the little fellow, so he was called “Mun Bun.” It was a name he had made up for himself. “Where is Mun Bun? Is he lost again?” asked Mrs. Bunker, starting to take off her apron to go in search of the “little tyke,” as she often called him, for he certainly did get into mischief very many times. “Mun Bun isn’t lost,” answered Violet, as she hurried out on the porch with Margy. “He’s out in the yard with Laddie, digging a hole.” “An’ he says he’s going to dig down to China,” added Margy. “And I just put clean bloomers on him!” sighed Mrs. Bunker. “But who is gone?” she asked again. “It can’t be Rose or Russ—they’re too old to be taken by a tramp!” There, now you have heard the names of all six of the little Bunkers, though Russ, being nearly ten, I think, wouldn’t like to be called “little.” “No, it isn’t Russ or Rose,” said Margy. “I saw them going down the street. Maybe they’re going to daddy’s office to ask him for some money to buy candy.”
