Book excerpt: Research suggest that increasing employee commitment and satisfaction impacts on employee productivity and job performance, and has implications for job related behaviours such as absenteeism, turnover and tardiness. Moreover, literature also suggests that downsizing and cost-cutting negatively impacts on the satisfaction and commitment of employees and impacts on the effectiveness of organisations. The contention is that in order to reconcile the need to achieve high quality and organisational effectiveness in an environment of declining per capita resources and change, it will be necessary to secure a high level of commitment and satisfaction from all those employed in the higher education sector. This study sought to investigate the factors that produce commitment and satisfaction in academic and support staff respectively and to understand any important similarities and differences that may exist.

Book excerpt: The biggest challenge faced by Human Resources Managers in tertiary institutions in trying to execute staff recruitment and retention strategies, is the employment of reward and motivation techniques that build job satisfaction and high commitment to excellent performance. Much debate exists on whether job satisfaction has effects on commitment levels among academic staff. Deductive reasoning was adopted for this research project utilising Herzberg's two factor theory to fully understand and explain the effects of job satisfaction on organisational commitment amongst academics. The results of the study showed that a greater proportion of the academic staff was not satisfied with their jobs with reasons for dissatisfaction including interalia high volume of work, inadequate salaries, allowances and unclear advancement opportunities. The findings of the study also indicated a significant relationship between job satisfaction and organisational commitment. There is, therefore, a need to craft a responsive incentive package that addresses the concerns of academic staff on issues related to job satisfaction and thus stave off turnover and lack of commitment.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to make South Africa a more just society after the first democratic elections on 27 April 1994, the South African society had to undergo a number of radical changes which impacted the social, economical, political and educational arena. These changes have influenced recruitment, retention and turnover. Changes at leadership levels in the private and public sphere coupled with a huge exodus of highly skilled professionals are evident as topics of equality and social justice appear at the top of company agendas. Many proponents have conducted research on organisational justice and the fact that more than twenty five thousand articles have been published on job satisfaction attest to the importance of these two variables on organisational performance. In an article examining past, present and future states of organisational justice it is argued that organisational justice has the potential to explain many organisational behavioural outcome variables. An investigation of the relationship between organisational justice perceptions and work behavior found job satisfaction to be made up of a large fairness component. The rationale behind the support for the study is the argument that employees who perceive that they have been fairly treated is likely to hold positive attitudes about their work, their work outcomes and their managers. If South African organisations wish to remain competitive then organisations need to understand how perceptions of justice influence attitudes and behaviour and consequently affect the success of the organisation. Agricultural Colleges, a division of the Department of Agriculture are no exception. The Agricultural Colleges' primary aim is to provide training to its prospective communities, and is continuously being evaluated in terms of how well its academic employees achieve its vision, mission and goals. It is evident from responses to job advertisements, low morale and high turnover that most of the academic employees in Agricultural Colleges are dissatisfied with their jobs, pay, management and the institutions based on their current salary. Attracting, recruiting and retraining highly skilled, internationally marketable and mobile employees are critical factors in determining the present and future success in agricultural training in South Africa. Limited research to examine the effects of organisational justice on organisational outcomes in an environment where the workforce consists of academics is the gap this research attempts to fill. This study is designed to assess the impact of organisational justice on job satisfaction of academic employees in agricultural colleges in South Africa. Also, to determine whether biographical values influence the relationship between organisational justice and job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of organisational justice on job satisfaction among administrative staff members at a university of technology in South Africa. A critical function of the administrative staff at a university of technology is to ensure that all students and other staff members are assisted as effectively and efficiently as possible. Administrative staff at a university of technology in South Africa needs to be committed and have a high morale to ensure that the vision of the University of Technology is fulfilled. This study promotes the application of the Equity Theory. People prefer to work in an environment that is perceived as just. In order for the administrative staff at a university of technology in South Africa to function effectively, it is essential for a university of technology to ensure that their administrative staff is satisfied.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, Makerere University (East African School of Higher Educational Studies and Development), course: Education Management, language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between quality of work life and job satisfaction of academic staff in public universities in Uganda using Makerere University as the case study. The study was prompted by the chronic problem of academic staff job satisfaction in Makerere University since the 1970s with most lecturers not devoted to their jobs, striking for salaries, rampant absenteeism from work, poor attitude, late coming for work and leaving early, delayed handing in of marks, continuous complaints and high rates of turnover for greener pastures. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: to establish the relationship between employee involvement and job satisfaction of academic staff; to examine the relationship between work environment and job satisfaction of academic staff; to find out the relationship between remuneration and job satisfaction of academic staff and to establish the relationship between recognition and job satisfaction of academic staff. A correlational, cross-sectional survey design was used to carry out the study. A sample of 162 respondents was systematically selected to participate in the study. Data were collected with the use of questionnaires. Frequencies and percentages were used to show the distribution of respondents on different items. Correlation and multiple regression were used to establish the relationships between the variables. The study findings empirically revealed that; employee involvement (r = 0.397 & p = 0.000); work environment (r = 0.525 & p = 0.000); remuneration (r = 0.389 & p = 0.000) and recognition (r = 0.362 & p = 0.000) have a positive significant relationship with job satisfaction. The study concluded that quality of work life enhances job satisfaction. Therefore, the researcher recommended that Makerere University management should involve academics when developing or revising the goals and objectives of the institution through workshops, so that suggestions of staff can form part of the development process, thus enabling successful implementation. Secondly, Makerere University should focus create a conducive working environment with adequate and relevant educational facilities alongside improved working relations and friendly employee policy. Thirdly, Makerere University should enhance the remuneration (e.g. fringe benefits, bonus payments) made to the academic staff in order to raise their job satisfaction levels.

On contrary, in order to meet the educational expenses and unforeseen nature of employment conditions a large number of students seek paid work. This study examines the impact of work-study conflict on Job Satisfaction, Presenteeism, Burnout and Turnover Intentions with Moderating Role of Supervisor Support among the employees who are working in different organizations and studying in universities. But there is no moderation between the relationship of work-study conflict (WSC), job satisfaction and turnover intentions. Implications and future d
