Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 27.5 million Americans—nearly 24 percent of the labor force—earn less than $8.70 an hour, not enough to keep a family of four out of poverty, even working full-time year-round. Job ladders for these workers have been dismantled, limiting their ability to get ahead in today's labor market. Low-Wage America is the most extensive study to date of how the choices employers make in response to economic globalization, industry deregulation, and advances in information technology affect the lives of tens of millions of workers at the bottom of the wage distribution. Based on data from hundreds of establishments in twenty-five industries—including manufacturing, telecommunications, hospitality, and health care—the case studies document how firms' responses to economic restructuring often results in harsh working conditions, reduced benefits, and fewer opportunities for advancement. For instance, increased pressure for profits in newly consolidated hotel chains has led to cost-cutting strategies such as requiring maids to increase the number of rooms they clean by 50 percent. Technological changes in the organization of call centers—the ultimate "disposable workplace"—have led to monitoring of operators' work performance, and eroded job ladders. Other chapters show how the temporary staffing industry has provided paths to better work for some, but to dead end jobs for many others; how new technology has reorganized work in the back offices of banks, raising skill requirements for workers; and how increased competition from abroad has forced U.S. manufacturers to cut costs by reducing wages and speeding production. Although employers' responses to economic pressures have had a generally negative effect on frontline workers, some employers manage to resist this trend and still compete successfully. The benefits to workers of multi-employer training consortia and the continuing relevance of unions offer important clues about what public policy can do to support the job prospects of this vast, but largely overlooked segment of the American workforce. Low-Wage America challenges us to a national self-examination about the nature of low-wage work in this country and asks whether we are willing to tolerate the profound social and economic consequences entailed by these jobs. Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary in terms of both its coverage and contributions, The Routledge Handbook of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Management in the Hospitality Industry provides an informative and systematic guide to the current state of knowledge on workforce diversity and its management. Providing empirical knowledge and reflective practice on diversity issues and their management in the hospitality industry, this handbook includes chapters written by a plethora of experts in the diversity management (DM) field, including scholars, academics, and industry experts, such as managers from leading hospitality industry firms. Logically structured and embellished with illustrative figures throughout, the volume provides critical reviews and an appraisal of current research and the future development of conceptual and theoretical approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) management in the hospitality industry, including dimensions of diversity in hospitality, such as gender, cultural/ethnic, age, disability, sexual orientation, and Indigenous workers. Elucidative examples are used from different countries such as Australia, Austria, Canada, Japan, United Arab Emirates, and India, and the volume takes a solution-based approach, providing future directions for emerging diversity researchers. Global in perspective, this book is a pivotal teaching resource for academics, an illustrative reference resource for Ph.D. students and early career researchers who work on workforce diversity and a practical guide for managers and HR consultants. It will also appeal to wider audiences, including those in tourism, recreation and leisure studies, and other professional fields.

We categorize these myriad papers in terms of history, scope, theory development, and population generalization. Part I thus begins with an article by James Price, a pioneering thinker in the turnover field. Initiating the most systematic turnover research ever undertaken, Dr. Price describes his persistent quest to develop and refine a comprehensive theory of turnover. His 30-year intellectual journey offers valuable insight into theoretical and methodological challenges that continue to confront all turnover researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture has returned to the poverty research agenda. Over the past decade, sociologists, demographers, and even economists have begun asking questions about the role of culture in many aspects of poverty, at times even explaining the behavior of low-income populations in reference to cultural factors. Unlike their predecessors, contemporary researchers rarely claim that culture will sustain itself for multiple generations regardless of structural changes, and they almost never use the term "pathology," which implied in an earlier era that people would cease to be poor if they changed their culture. The new generation of scholars conceives of culture in substantially different ways. In this latest issue of the ANNALS, readers are treated to thought-provoking articles that attempt to bridge the gap between poverty and culture scholarship, highlighting new trends in poverty research. This volume is vital reading, not only for sociologists but also for researchers across the social sciences as a whole.
