The purpose of the study was to establish a baseline of information about the job satisfaction of full-time business faculty members of higher education institutions in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Methodology. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire and a Demographic Information Form were used in collecting the data from full-time business faculty members from Kaduna State, based on a judgemental or purposive sample. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Findings. Three hypotheses (gender, length of employment, and highest degree attained) were rejected. A follow-up post test for length of employment and highest degree attained did not reveal any statistical significant effect at the.05 level. The findings showed that female full-time business faculty were more satisfied than their male counterpart and the longer the length of service, the lower the job satisfaction. The study also showed that faculty members with professional certifications, bachelor's degrees, and post doctorates had greater job satisfaction. In contrast, there was no interaction with job satisfaction on salary, age, academic rank, type of institution, and teaching responsibilities. Results of two open-ended questions concerning what full-time business faculty members liked and disliked most about their jobs showed that teaching and transmitting knowledge are the most-liked aspects of their jobs. Poor salaries/wages and fringe benefits are what full-time business faculty members disliked most about their jobs.

Book excerpt: The context of higher education business faculty is changing as a result of the chronic degradation in the production of traditional faculty with doctorates in business-related disciplines (Mauldin, McManis, & Breaux, 2011). As a result of the decline in traditional (first) career path business faculty, non-traditional (second) career path business faculty are transitioning into the academy with a breadth and depth of professional business experience that is now being sought by business schools (Garrison, 2005). The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the factors related to job satisfaction for full-time first and second career business faculty teaching in accredited business programs at public, master's level colleges and universities located in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accreditation region. Herzberg's Motivator-Hygiene Theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Utilizing the constructs of personal characteristics, job characteristics, job satisfaction, and perceived work environment, an online survey collected data from full-time first and second career college and university business faculty. The researcher investigated the importance of and differences in perceptions of Herzberg's motivator-hygiene factors for first and second career business faculty. Additionally, the researcher investigated the relationship between job satisfaction and the motivator-hygiene factors for each category of faculty. Finally, the researcher investigated differences in job satisfaction based on business school accreditation agency and predictors of job satisfaction for first and second career business faculty. Study results indicated higher overall mean scores and identical individual rankings of the motivator factors and lower overall mean scores and nearly identical rankings of the hygiene factors. No statistically significant differences in motivator and hygiene factor mean scores were observed between first and second career faculty. Study results revealed medium to moderately strong positive correlations between job satisfaction and the motivator and hygiene factors for first and second career faculty. No significant difference in job satisfaction was observed for first and second career faculty. Multiple regression analysis produced a predictive model of four motivator and hygiene factors for first career faculty and a second career model including personal and job characteristics and motivator and hygiene factors.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 4.00, Obafemi Awolowo University (Faculty of Administration), course: Business Administration, language: English, abstract: This study identified existing organizational practices and policies helping to balance work and life roles among workers and examined the factors that inhibit or enhance their adoption by workers in South-Western Nigeria. It also investigated the relationship between work-life balance and performance of workers, with a view to gaining an understanding of the range of ways by which workers in Nigeria achieve work-life balance. The study was conducted in six purposively selected private universities across the six states of South-western Nigeria, using primary and secondary data. A sample size of 540 was derived from a total of 702 using stratified sampling technique. Questionnaires were administered to all the respondents to ferret information on work-life balance and performance of workers. Secondary data from institutional records were used to augment information gathered through the questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using frequency cross-tabulation, correlation and regression analysis. Organizational policies such as the provision of crèche, staff school, staff club, recreational centres, staff canteen and annual family get together were identified as locally adopted practices by staff. The study found that the existence of these organizational policies and practices is positively correlated with available variation of such policies and practices (r=0.859; p>0.01), use or adoption of such policies and practices (r=0.898; p>0.01) and the perception of a balanced work and life interaction (r=0.184; p>0.01). Personal perception of a balanced work-life is also positively and significantly correlated with all the other factors; availability of variations (r=0.144; p>0.01) and adoption of these policies and practices (r=0.166; p>0.01). A fairly low Durbin-Watson score of 1.366 indicates that the availability of any other Work-Life balancing factor, such as flexible working, could dramatically affect the outcome of the study. It also confirmed the hypothesis that there is no relationship between adoption of work-life balance policies or practices and performance. Summarily, there is the need for the expansion of work-life balancing practices to include such practices as flexible working, tele-working, job-sharing, paternity leave, multiple tranches maternity leave and the simpler breast feeding break and that undergraduate HRM curriculum should include work-life balancing concepts to expand the scope of enquiries into their features and evolutions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to contribute to the body of research on the factors which influence job satisfaction and retention of business faculty in higher education. This study utilized the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty NSOPF: 2004 which is a nationally representative sample of higher education faculty and was sponsored by the NCES and the U.S. Department of Education. It is important to investigate the characteristics which predict job satisfaction of business faculty as their expertise and field-based research affect the global economy. The study looked at the effect of several factors on the job satisfaction of business faculty: age, race, satisfaction with authority to make decisions, satisfaction with workload, demographics, highest degree, satisfaction with technology-based activities, satisfaction with salary, satisfaction with benefits, satisfaction with institutional support for teaching improvement and satisfaction with scholarly activities.Maslow's needs hierarchy theory was one of the first theories to examine important contributors to job satisfaction. Professor's job satisfaction appears to be the most widely studied factor in relation to professor self-efficacy. Without self-efficacy, people will not try hard to achieve anything because they will have the perception that their efforts will be pointless. Professor self-efficacy is a professor's perceived capability to impart knowledge and to influence the behavior of students. Herzberg's Motivational-Hygiene Theory is examined to determine the factors which influence job satisfaction. The paper examined if the characteristics of the structure of the population of business faculty predict job satisfaction. The findings were that faculty were equally satisfied based on gender and race. With respect to the factors which best predict levels of job satisfaction among business faculty, the findings were that faculty were satisfied with workload, technology-based activities, and scholarly activities. The results of the analysis indicated that business faculty comprise a distinct group among higher education faculty and possess a unique set of characteristics in terms of their demographic educational background employment status workloadinstructional practices and research activities. The researcher noted several features of the definition which make job satisfaction a fundamentally complex social attitude and there is confusion and debate about the applicability of Herzberg's theory.
