Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn best practices for software development project management—and lead your teams and projects to success. Dr. Lawrence Peters is an industry-recognized expert with decades of experience conducting research and leading real-world software projects. Beyond getting the best developers, equipment, budget, and timeline possible—Peters concludes that no factor is more critical to project success than the manager’s role. Drawing on proven practices from allied industries such as business, psychology, accounting, and law, he describes a broader project-management methodology—with principles that software managers can readily adapt to help increase their own effectiveness and the productivity of their teams. Unlike other books on the topic, this book focuses squarely on the manager—and shows how to get results without adopting philosophies from Genghis Khan or Machiavelli. (There is mention of Godzilla, however.) Packed with real-world examples and pragmatic advice, this book shows any software development manager—new or experienced—how to lead teams in delivering the right results for their business.

This tutorial book is targeted to both practitioners and researchers. The practitioner will benefit from numerous pointers to performance and QoS issues; the pedagogical style and plenty of references can be of great use in solving practical problems. The researcher and advanced student are offered a representative set of topics not only for their research value but also for their novelty and use in identifying areas of active research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality control and assurance cover a diverse area of modern life and play, undeniably, an important role. This book brings together a collection of international papers that showcase examples of current research and practice in industry and the medical profession. It is hoped that engineers, researchers and scientists will be assisted in their continuous quest for excelling in qualitative aspects. The Ancient Greek word arete means excellence or virtue and defines the highest qualitative state: a mans effectiveness and skill in goodness (optimum potentiae). Indeed, Ancient Greeks believed that without quality control, specifications are useless and may result to illegitimacy, which in turn may become a threat to society itself.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Performance Evaluation for I/S Development Information systems are a major force in today's organization. Unfortunately, the development of information systems remains very labor-intensive and quite difficult to manage. It is not surprising that Is management is searching for improved methods for evaluating the performance of Is developers. This paper makes an initial step in the evaluation of the Is function by presenting an approach for evaluating the performance of Is development units and describing its use in a large international technology manufacturing firm. We first present a diagnostic, behavior-based model for measuring software development from a management perspective. This model proposes measures of development processes and products from the task, social, and organizational levels of analysis. We then describe the application of this model in a large international technology manufacturing firm. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used as a technique for applying the model to the firms performance data. The results of the DEA analysis is then used to investigate the performance impacts of various management policies. This evaluation approach provides a systematic method for evaluating development performance. It highlights the importance of using a range of behavior-based measures for evaluating performance, and it illustrates a methodology for examining performance based on such measures.
