Book excerpt: Charles Pechard, Paris Police Commissioner, created this manual for the practical use of jiu-jitsu in 1906. At the time Paris was in the grips of a crime wave, and the violent "Apache" street gangs were terrorizing Paris' upper crust and working class alike. The great Charlemont was adapting La Boxe Francaise for use in the street, while others were looking to other martial arts such as boxing and especially jiu-jitsu. Commissioner Pechard was inspired by a Japaneses delegation who visited Paris to examine the various aspects of of municipal administration, and when he saw how effective this method of grappling was he knew that he had to make it available to his officers. More than anyone else, the gendarmes were in a position where they had to be effective in combat without turning to deadly force. For Pechard the rational application of the joint locks and chokes supplied by jiu-jitsu were the perfect tool for men in law enforcement. His manual contains hundred of photos and includes a special section on self defense for women. While many of the techniques he outlines would be considered too harsh by the standards of modern law enforcement (and several are rather weird and questionable), they are definitely effective. Pechard's guide to jiu-jitsu for law enforcement purposes is at once instructive and amusing, offering rich source material both for people who are always hungry for greater knowledge regarding effective combative techniques, as well as those who like to glimpse back through the veil of time at how things truly were during the "Belle Epoque."

Download or read book Jiu Jitsu written by Jonathan Cussins and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jiu Jitsu is an unarmed form of combat first used by the samurai warriors of ancient Japan. It's an all-round martial art that uses striking, blocking, grappling, locking, throwing submission and weapons techniques. Jiu Jitsu is used by police and armed forces around the world and for street self defence. Jiu jitsu has an emphasis on technique over power and strength by using the opponent's force against themselves. The trained jiu jitsuka (student of jiu jitsu) is able to subdue their unwitting opponent quickly using only the minimal physical effort required. This book is not intended to be a 'how to' manual for learning jiu jitsu, there are plenty of those books already available which can be an invaluable addition to your training. This book picks up on all those areas of jiu jitsu that can be learned and researched 'off the mat' (tatami) and outside the dojo (the training centre). Being proficient at the techniques of jiu jitsu is a great skill. To truly progress the student must train both the mental and the physical sides of the art, training with as much realism as can be safely allowed. Some chapters of this book will help those potential students unsure of whether jiu jitsu is for them to make a more informed decision. This book will also be of great use to those looking to achieve higher grades in jiu jitsu, to expand their knowledge, educate themselves on the wider concepts and hopefully spark off an interest in research that will lead them deeper into their own development and search for self improvement. For those students earning (or aspiring to) the 'Black Belt' you are now the custodian of all those that have gone before and passed down their knowledge. There is a responsibility to understand and appreciate where this knowledge has come from and to hopefully pass on (to give) more than you have taken therefore keeping the art alive and applicable to modern times whilst having respect and awareness of more than just the physical application and excellence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trial Tactics The skillful conduct of a trial may be com pared somewhat to the jiu jitsu system of wrest ling, which enables the inferior man, with less weight, less strength and less endurance to win because he knows better how to apply the weight and the strength that he does possess, while the heavier and stronger man loses because he does not know how to apply these forces at the right time or in the right manner. Law books con tain decisions upon certain instructions, hold ing them technically right or wrong, but no where do these books indicate how to get those lawful and honorable advantages in the litiga tion which are a legitimate part of the lawyer's duty to his client. If one of the Seconds in a boxing match should neglect to take the choice corner and Should set his man up with the strong sunlight in his eyes it would be considered gross negligence. In a law suit the lawyer is the Second. He must put his client in the right corner and to fail to do so is to subject himself to the charge of negligence.
