Book excerpt: On his return from Vietnam, John Clarkson goes badly astray in his life for a while. But all that changes when he’s on a job in South America and receives a nearly lethal bite from a spider. That’s when he meets a Chilean mystic who not only saves his life; he helps John develop unsuspected abilities that transform him from a going-to-seed, middle-aged guy, to a magnetic, powerful figure, whose life becomes a thrilling action-adventure. On his return from Chile, John finds himself flying high-tech planes, romancing beautiful women, travelling the world, and building a financial portfolio that brings him untold riches. But nothing comes without a price, and John’s fortune soon attracts the interest of a range of dirty-dealers, who would like nothing better than to get their hands on his money and see him dead. Fast-paced, humorous, and jam-packed with surprising adventures, Venom Flight explores what happens when a man discovers astonishing talents in himself and makes the very most of them.

Book excerpt: From the National Book Award–winning author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the tale of a troubled boy’s trip through history. Half Native American and half Irish, fifteen-year-old “Zits” has spent much of his short life alternately abused and ignored as an orphan and ward of the foster care system. Ever since his mother died, he’s felt alienated from everyone, but, thanks to the alcoholic father whom he’s never met, especially disconnected from other Indians. After he runs away from his latest foster home, he makes a new friend. Handsome, charismatic, and eloquent, Justice soon persuades Zits to unleash his pain and anger on the uncaring world. But picking up a gun leads Zits on an unexpected time-traveling journey through several violent moments in American history, experiencing life as an FBI agent during the civil rights movement, a mute Indian boy during the Battle of Little Bighorn, a nineteenth-century Indian tracker, and a modern-day airplane pilot. When Zits finally returns to his own body, “he begins to understand what it means to be the hero, the villain and the victim. . . . Mr. Alexie succeeds yet again with his ability to pierce to the heart of matters, leaving this reader with tears in her eyes” (The New York Times Book Review). Sherman Alexie’s acclaimed novels have turned a spotlight on the unique experiences of modern-day Native Americans, and here, the New York Times–bestselling author of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian takes a bold new turn, combining magical realism with his singular humor and insight. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Sherman Alexie including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Every step was planned out and together they shaped their violence into an unstoppable team, beginning to reclaim what was lost. They began a life together, not the one they wanted, but the one they were dealt, and they swore to stay ahead of the doom enfulging their world, but at what cost? Book excerpt: Late summer 1941. Louisianas piney woods are engulfed by a tidal wave of soldiers engaged in the largest army maneuvers ever undertaken on American soil. For many of these young men, as well as the isolated Southern communities, life will never be the same. Although no one knows it, our nation will be at war in three months. Elizabeth Reed is a young Louisiana schoolteacher who dislikes soldiers. Harry Miller is a Wisconsin soldier who hates Louisiana. It only makes sense that they should meet and fall in love. Their story begins with a bulletan empty cartridge tossed from a truckload of soldiers. The note inside it will change the destinies of these two young people. In the midst of large-scale battles between the red and blue armies, Harry and Elizabeth are each fighting their own war with dark secrets from their pasts. They have nothing in common except mutual desires to escape these pasts. In spite of clashing at every turn, they run right into each others arms as they jointly learn that the hardest person to forgive is yourself. Within this clash of cultures lies the core message of A Spent Bullet. Rural Louisiana is never the same, and neither are the soldiers who learn about Louisiana mud, mosquitoes, and misery mixed with memorable Southern hospitality. More than a love story, A Spent Bullet recreates a memorable but largely forgotten time in Louisiana and our nations history. Told in the warm and touching style loved by readers of his previous eight books, Curt Iles weaves a story of love, history, and redemption.

This collection is enhanced by their light-hearted, informative introduction and afterwords to each story. ~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~ Roger was dozing in his seat when he felt the familiar small hands and bony knees of his daughter climbing into his lap. He opened his eyes and put one arm around her; she, in turn, had one firm arm around Buffalo Bill?s neck. ?Hi, sweetie,? he said, his voice hoarse. ?Something the matter?? Marta looked solemnly out into the starry night. The car seemed to be hovering motionless in the sky. A strange black sky, with no ground visible. Earth was invisible far below them; it could not be seen through any of their windows. They had flown out of the shadow of Earth, thrown by their retained rotational velocity. Now Roger would keep the sun under them, charge the hull with electricity to ward off the solar wind, and pray. The thermo-electric elements kept the car cool enough, but the floor and walls were warm to the touch. The windows were edged with flame from the sunlight below. ?Where are we?? Marta asked. Roger cleared his throat. ?We?re nearly halfway to the moon, sweetie.? Luna was visible off to the right, as if on the horizon. ?Oh.? She considered the stars thoughtfully. Finally, unexpectedly, she asked, ?Are we going to be like the tigers?? Startled, Roger laughed. ?Sure. You like that one?? He used a light tone, to see if she would turn playful. Marta nodded, meeting his gaze solemnly. Sobering, Roger recited: ?The mind desires to roam, The soul aspires to soar, But Earth?s a fettered prison Without freedom?s ancient lore. My seeking mind turns outward To tropic jungles and the night, Where cold-eyed tigers freely prowl To hunt and dream and smite.? Marta said sleepily, ?It?s always night out here,? and touched her nose to his. He kissed her cheek. ?Do you know one about buffaloes?? she asked, cuddling. ?Uh, yeah, I know a song about where buffalo roam. Or used to, at least. Shall I teach it to you?? ?Yeah!? ?Okay.? Roger paused to get the lyrics straight and as he did, he reflected that buffaloes had been confined to zoos and parks even longer than tigers. ?Oh, give me a home?.? As he sang and cuddled his daughter, Roger brooded over his position and course. He had been brooding over the course for days. They were approaching turnover time for travel to the Moon or Ell Clusters, and still piling on gee. Luna, of course, was nowhere near his line of flight. He would pass near the L-4 Cluster as space distances go, but it would scarcely be visible. The transponder had beeped occasionally? it sounded off audibly when tweaked by questing beams, even as it responded. Now Roger shut off its responses. To have come out without filing a flight plan or with a silent transponder would have been a giveaway; the Patrol would have been all over him at once. Now, though, maybe he had left it on too long. As it was, the transponder had beeped every fifteen minutes or so since he had first been warned of his deviation from his LEO destination. They knew where he was, how fast he was accelerating, and in what direction. Where were they? Roger hugged his daughter, sang louder as she joined in the chorus. He couldn?t help glancing around at all the windows, expecting to see the prow of a CisLunar Patrol ship, evil menace incarnate, loom near them. If they caught him, he would lose his daughter. He could think of nothing else to do. He could only run.

So began the tales of Jimmy Jumpferjoy. I would ask them what kind of adventures he would have and they would tell me, it was interactive fun for all of us. I took creative writing in high school and began to write down the stories. In college I took English Composition where I improved in my writing, and during a lonely year I spent on Marthas Vineyard without any friends, I began to step inside Jimmy Jumpferjoys world. A two dimensional character became three dimensional. I hope you have as much fun reading these stories as I had writing them!!!!!!!!!!
