At times, the humor's point is actually more powerful than the laugh that it delivers and for several of these jokes, the right response is not really laughter but instead, a consoling sigh of recognition or a bitter nod. The didactic can preclude laughing for free similar with slapstick humor that derives the laughter from the misfortune of other people.
