Robert Stein, a seasoned Gospels scholar, offers an in-depth and insightful commentary on Mark chapter 13, an important and puzzling discourse of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first ever collection of scholarly essays in English devoted specifically to the theme of the expression 'son of man'. It describes the major competing theories which have addressed questions such as: What is the original Aramaic expression which lies behind the Greek phrase, and what was its original connotation? How do the gospel writers use the expression 'son of man'? Is it a Christological title, pregnant with meaning, much like the titles son of God, Christ/Messiah, and son of David? Is it used as a way of designating Jesus as a human being of unique redemptive significance? Or does it rather originate in a nuanced use (obscured in Greek translation) of an Aramaic expression used in place of the first person pronoun, as an indefinite pronoun, or for generic statements about human beings? Larry Hurtado and Paul Owen have brought together contributing scholars on the basis of their expertise in Aramaic, historical Jesus research, the son of man debate itself, and related fields of research.

Book excerpt: 'Son of Man' is practically the only self-designation employed by Jesus himself in the gospels, but is used in such a way that no hint is left of any particular theological significance. Still, during the first many centuries of the church, the expression as it was reused was given content, first literally as signifying Christ's human nature. Later 'Son of Man' was thought to be a christological title in its own right. Today, many scholars are inclined to think that, in an original Aramaic of an historical Jesus, it was little more than a rhetorical circumlocution, referring to the one speaking. Mogens Müller's 'The Expression 'Son of Man' and the Development of Christology: A History of Interpretation' is the first study of the 'Son of Man' trope, which traces the history of interpretation from the Apostolic Fathers to the present, concluding that the various interpretations of this phrase reflect little more than the various doctrinal assumptions held by its interpreters over centuries.

If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. Jesus Christ, the second Adam, the Son of Man, glorified God by His obedience to the cross. This work of redemption is the basis by which all the counsels of God are accomplished. All that God does for man, all that He works out on mankind’s behalf, has its foundation upon the death of the Son of Man. God will eventually gather all things—in heaven and on earth—into the raised and glorified Christ. God will be glorified in all that He does, and He has exalted the resurrected Son of Man to His right hand in glory. This is where it begins. When this Man had finished His work, He forever sat down in regards to a completed redemption (Heb. 10:12). From this point, all God’s counsels begin to unfold. If the believer will read this book, and ask the Spirit of God to teach you, you will never be the same. All of Scripture will open up to you. The believer has been given the Spirit of God that you may know all these things and you have the mind of Christ (I Cor. 2:12,16). “Now the Son of Man is glorified ...”

Book excerpt: Although it is a foundational confession for all Christians, much of the theological significance of Jesus's identity as "the Son of God" is often overlooked or misunderstood. Moreover, this Christological concept stands at the center of today's Bible translation debates and increased ministry efforts to Muslims. New Testament scholar D. A. Carson sheds light on this important issue with his usual exegetical clarity and theological insight, first by broadly surveying Jesus's biblical name as "the Son of God, and then by focusing on two key texts that speak of Christ's sonship. The book concludes with the implications of Jesus's divine sonship for how modern Christians think and speak about Christ, especially in relation to Bible translation and missionary engagement with Muslims across the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book should be mandatory reading for all scholars concerned with Christian origins ... nothing of comparable importance has been written for at least a decade." - Freethinker For more than a century scholars have been examining the Gospels and other traditions about the life of Jesus to determine their historical accuracy. Although the results of these scholarly efforts are sometimes controversial, the consensus among researchers today is that the four Evangelists'' accounts cannot be taken at face value. In fact, a team of more than 100 scholars called the Jesus Seminar has come to the conclusion that on average only about 18 percent of the four Gospels is historically accurate. An active member of the Jesus Seminar, Dr. Robert M. Price presents the fruits of this important historical research in this fascinating discussion of early Christianity. As the title suggests, Price is none too optimistic about the reliability of the Gospel tradition as a source of accurate historical information about the life of Jesus. Indeed, he feels that his colleagues in the Jesus Seminar are much too optimistic in their estimate of authentic material in the Gospels. After an introduction to the historical-critical method for nonspecialists and a critique of the methods used by the Jesus Seminar, Price systematically discusses the narrative and teaching materials in the Gospel, clearly presenting what is known and not known about all of the major episodes of Jesus'' life. He also examines the parables for authenticity as well as Jesus'' teachings about the Kingdom of God, repentance, prayer, possessions and poverty, the Atonement, and many other features of the Gospels.Written for the general reading public in a lively and accessible style, Dr. Price''s highly informative discussion will be of interest to anyone who has wondered about the origins of Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short book resolves the mystery of why Jesus chose to call himself Son of Man. Far earlier, the first Son of Man--the prophet Ezekiel--had met death as a Babylonian substitute king. Professor Simo Parpola's expert exposition about Assyrian substitutes prepares readers for the sacrifice first of Ezekiel and then, far later in time, of Jesus. Ezekiel was the Suffering Servant of Isaiah chapter 53, and had perished as a substitute to redeem the lives of his rebellious countrymen. Understanding Ezekiel's fate, Jesus chose the Son of Man title to exemplify his own redemptive mission. The authors of Mark, Luke, and Matthew subsequently framed their passion accounts so as to describe the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus as a latter-day substitute king. Most of this will come as news to students of both testaments of Scripture.

The original 1997 book won a Gold Medallion Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, and this updated version, factoring in new scholarship, debate, critical methods, and the ongoing quest of the historical Jesus, ensures the work will remain a top tool for exploring the life of Christ through the first four books of the New Testament.

Book excerpt: Would You Like to Know Jesus as Those Closest to Him Did? There are many books describing the life and times of Jesus. This biography puts no words in Jesus's mouth other than his own-those recorded in the Bible by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This account of Christ's ministry years unfolds in chronological order and stands you squarely next to Jesus as he walks a path that leads to a cross, putting flesh and blood on his experiences and teachings. Son of Man: A Biography of Jesus arranges the Gospels in a narrative arc with a clear beginning, middle, and end. It reorders the nonlinear storyline of the Gospels and tells the story chronologically to help you see how, and maybe more importantly, why things unfolded as they did. To create the you-are-there feel it is written in present tense and Jesus's story is told in the context of his culture. The geography, climate, politics, racism, social norms, religion, traditions, economics, morality, language, and customs of the second temple era play key roles in this narrative. What emerges is a holistic, historically accurate dramatization that provides a 360-degree view of Jesus and his world. Through this book, you can take a trip through time and sit at the feet of the Son of Man. No fictionalized elements or dialog have been added. All events and quotations are taken from the texts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Acts. All of Jesus's recorded words and actions are included, and duplicate accounts have been harmonized. Recent books about the life of Christ have been skeptical of the Bible and have used Jewish and Roman texts as their primary sources. Religious and secular history books provide valuable insights into Jesus's world, but to understand the man himself, the best sources are the ancient narratives written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. An appendix is included to help Bible students study Jesus's ministry years chronologically, pericope by pericope. For deeper research, Old Testament passages that are relevant to each event are cited. If you are a student of Jesus's life and times, or a follower of Jesus and his teachings, you will find yourself looking at Jesus with new eyes and new understanding. And you will gain a greater appreciation for what it must have taken for Jesus to do what he did: embody the Son of God in the Son of Man. "Harris's work takes complex events in the life of Jesus and explains them in the same simple way Jesus often explained complex events to the people of His own day. This is a fresh look at Jesus in a way that benefits both old scholars, new believers, and those who are just curious.Easy to pick up. Hard to set down." -TONY LISTON, pastor of Adventure Christian Community, Davenport, Iowa "At first I thought, 'A biography of Jesus...why?' Henry Harris has done a marvelous job of pulling together the Gospel accounts, adding both commentary and color that, in a very reader-friendly style invites us to take a freshly prepared look at the old, old story. As a pastor, I can see giving out copies to new converts and seekers, letting Jesus's life story kindle in them a desire to discover more in the treasure chest that is the Bible." -RICK LAWRENSON, pastor of Nags Head Church, Nags Head, North Carolina "Son of Man is grounded in the Gospels and bolstered by just the right amount of cultural context, but is not afraid to take some risks to tell the story of Jesus in a modern and intuitive way. This makes it a great read for the beginner who desires a fuller, more chronological account, but also for the veteran who wishes to see the story with fresh eyes." -ED TAYLOR, pastor of Quest Church, Arlington Heights, Illinois"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a Commentary like no other today. It reveals the true nature of Jesus as He walked on the earth and fulfilled the very necessary role that was required because of Adam’s fall. It fulfills the passage of I Corinthians 15:45—the last Adam. Jesus had to be like us in order to take our place. He was not God in flesh as preached today from most pulpits. He was the manifestation of God, His Father. Manifestation is the KEY word. He was God manifested in the flesh. When the Apostles saw Jesus in action they saw God the Father, John 14:9-11. We can see God in Jesus. Another important message is that Jesus was our pattern. We, the Church, should be doing the things that He did today. He Said to the disciples:“As the Father sent Me, so send I you.”John 20:21. Then He included us in His prayer in John 17:20-21. The Bible has been translated by those who believe in the doctrine of the Trinity. This came from Constantine and the first Nicene Creed in the 300s AD with the penalty of death involving over 200 Bishops if rhey did not sign it as he commanded. It seems that two were willing to die for the truth. All that was required to emphasize that Jesus was God just involved some prepositions and pronouns. However, the bulk of Jesus’ confession indicates otherwise. The Prologue is the foundation of proof that Jesus was a human being just like you and me. The Lord told me that most everyone is a product of someone else’s teaching today. However, when I was first filled with the Holy Spirit in my mid-twenties Jesus told me to let Him teach me. I have been faithful to that command for nearly 65 years. This commentary is the result of that command.
