Book excerpt: Digital Jesus documents how like-minded individuals created a large web of religious communication on the Internet, in essence developing a new type of new religious movement--one without a central leader or institution. By tracing the group's origins back to the email lists and "Usenet" groups of the 1980s up to the online forums of today, Digital Jesus also serves as a succinct history of the development of online group communications. --from publisher description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.

Interpreting certain themes in the Gospels is often done through a twenty-first-century Western perspective. Judge Jesus will seek to help a modern reader of the Gospel of John see the concept of Jesus’s messianic judgeship through the eyes of a first-century Jewish audience. Judge Jesus will explore how the themes of judgment and messianic expectation throughout Early Judaism impacted how John’s Jewish audience would have understood the words of his Gospel. As a twenty-first-century interpreter of the Gospel of John, your studies will be greatly enhanced as you start to see these themes in the same way that John’s Jewish audience originally understood the words that he wrote.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and Bible expert Bart Ehrman reveals how Jesus’s divinity became dogma in the first few centuries of the early church. The claim at the heart of the Christian faith is that Jesus of Nazareth was, and is, God. But this is not what the original disciples believed during Jesus’s lifetime—and it is not what Jesus claimed about himself. How Jesus Became God tells the story of an idea that shaped Christianity, and of the evolution of a belief that looked very different in the fourth century than it did in the first. A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman reveals how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty, Creator of all things. But how did he move from being a Jewish prophet to being God? In a book that took eight years to research and write, Ehrman sketches Jesus’s transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus’s followers had visions of him after his death—alive again—did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God. And what they meant by that was not at all what people mean today. Written for secular historians of religion and believers alike, How Jesus Became God will engage anyone interested in the historical developments that led to the affirmation at the heart of Christianity: Jesus was, and is, God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Channeled by Rev. Cynthia Williams and Verling Chako Priest, PhD, Jesus/Jeshua ben Joseph’s Jesus: My Beloved Connection to Humanity and the Sea is a fascinating read. Jesus begins by telling the reader who God is and how we too are gods. Jesus uses metaphors to help the reader understand how this could be. Taking the sacred number of 12, he weaves the twelve chapters into the rich tapestry of teachings for humanity’s growth. He explains how humanity stepped down its energies on a soul level in order to experience duality in all its variations. Jesus has a deep love of the sea that is evident in the many miracles that he performed in multiplying fish and calming the waters. In our own history, we can find reference to dolphin-like creatures that walked upon the land during the day and returned to the sea at night. The teachings these beings brought forth were all about love, peace, and joy. Jesus communicated with the sea world on an ongoing basis. It is his desire for humanity to understand that there is more to his story than what is in the Bible. Jesus the Christ asks you to read this book, allowing yourself to awaken your own remembrance from that far distant time.

Book excerpt: He helped save people every day—but he had no idea how to save himself. Jason Sautel had it all. Confident in his abilities and trusted by his fellow firefighters, he was making a name for himself on the streets of Oakland, California. His adrenaline-fueled job even helped him forget the pain of his childhood—until the day he looked into the eyes of a jumper on the Bay Bridge and came face to face with a darkness he knew would take him down as well. In the following months, a series of traumatic emergency calls—some successful, others impossible-to-forget failures—drove Jason deeper into depression. Even as he continued his lifesaving work, he realized he could never rescue everyone, and he had no idea how to save himself. In the end, Jason was forced to confront the truth: only the relentless power of love could pull him back from his own deadly fall. Action-packed, spiritually honest, and surprisingly romantic, The Rescuer transports readers inside the pulse-pounding world of firefighting and into the heart of a man who needed to be broken before he could finally be made whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become standard in modern interpretation to say that Jesus performed miracles, and even mainline scholarly interpreters classify Jesus's healings and exorcisms as miracles. Some highly regarded scholars have argued, more provocatively, that the healings and exorcisms were magic, and that Jesus was a magician. As Richard Horsley points out, if we make a critical comparison between modern interpretation of Jesus's healing and exorcism, on the one hand, and the Gospel stories and other ancient texts, on the other hand, it becomes clear that the miracle and magic are modern concepts, products of Enlightenment thinking. Jesus and Magic asserts that Gospel stories do not have the concepts of miracle and magic. What scholars constructed as magic turns out to have been ritual practices such as songs (incantations), medicines (potions), and appeals to higher powers for protection. Horsley offers a critical reading of the healing and exorcism episodes in the Gospel stories. This reading reveals a dynamic relationship between Jesus the healer, the trust of those coming for healing, and their support networks in local communities. Horsley's reading of the Gospel stories gives little or no indication of divine intervention. Rather, the healing and exorcism stories portray healings and exorcisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That the synoptic writers believed that Jesus cast out demons and that such a role figured prominently in the Synoptics' portrait of him can scarcely be denied. And yet, only scant scholarly attention has been focused on Jesus' role as exorcist. Even less consideration has been given to the significance of Jesus as exorcist for understanding the historical Jesus. Now, in a provocative and insightful study, Graham Twelftree helps New Testament scholars move beyond such myopia. Twelftree examines exorcists and exorcism in first-century Palestine, assesses the New Testament accounts of demons and their demise, and explores the implications and significance of the fact that Jesus was indeed an exorcist. The volume appeared originally in the noted German series Wissenschaftliche Unteruchmungen zum Neuen Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the New Testament writers, the Old Testament scriptures and the teachings of Jesus were key sources of authority and influence. When these influences are considered alongside each other, each can illuminate the other, deepening the New Testament writers' presentation of Jesus and our understanding of their interpretations. In Jesus and Scripture, Tom Parker examines the way in which Hebrews, James, and 1 and 2 Peter deal with these two different sources of authority, how they relate to each other, and what shifts have occurred historically and theologically within the writing of these texts. Treating the four epistles methodologically, Parker examines the particular ways in which each writer draws on the Hebrew scriptures. Ultimately, he argues convincingly that the nascent Jesus tradition, particularly via oral routes, influenced the way the Old Testament was processed by these various New Testament writers.

Readers will explore the various facets of Jesus and His mission and ministry through a number of symbols found in the Bible. Symbols and concepts are illustrated through numerous Scripture texts. Questions are frequently presented to stimulate the child to think for him or herself. Renie Brown writes, believing that children can learn to study the Bible, its deep concepts and truths, and think for themselves. Parental guidance is highly encouraged to ascertain that the child correctly understands the Bible passages studied. Repetition will be needed to allow the child time to learn, comprehend, and master the concepts presented. All the Bible texts quoted are from the King James Version, so this book can be used as a textbook to increase your child's vocabulary. Defining words can be fun, and when you purchase the activity book, you will have a resource to glean from. "Learn more and more about Jesus and you can't go wrong. That is what this book is going to help you do. It is going to teach you more and more about Jesus. If you don't quite understand something, remember with the Holy Spirit, you can understand hard things. Just ask the Lord for the Spirit, and He will teach you. This will prepare you for the great things that the Lord wants to use you for."
