Peindre la vie d'un homme entièrement pur, dont le cœur et la conscience n'ont jamais été flétris par les pensées mauvaises qui nous sont si naturelles, demande une première condition incontournable à son égard : la sincérité. Un écrivain comme Renan, par exemple, en dépit de ses talents littéraires, n'a su produire qu'une Vie de Jésus fictive, sans vérité ni beauté, parce que son intention dernière était de rabaisser le personnage, pour se disculper lui-même. Mais la sincérité ne suffit pas, il faut aussi, dans une certaine mesure, savoir pénétrer les motivations profondes de celui dont on parle. A cet égard, des quatre évangélistes, Jean fut certainement le plus qualifié. De même parmi toutes les Vie de Jésus qui ont été ensuite écrites avec piété, certaines approchent plus exactement que d'autres l'âme du fils de l'homme. Celle que Christoph-Joannes Riggenbach a donné à l'Eglise est une des meilleures, ainsi que l'ont signalé à son époque, plusieurs exégètes de valeur.
