Book excerpt: At the turn of the 20th century, Glasgow was the centre for an avant-garde movement of art and design innovation in Europe, which we now refer to as The Glasgow Style. While the "Glasgow Boys" group of painters has been widely written about, their female contemporaries have received far less attention. In this work, the editor redresses this imbalance, bringing together research from 18 scholars on the work of an astonishing number of female artists from this period.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume presents the biographies of 1,000 women who were active in the British decorative arts over the last few centuries. Some of these women are known today, some are not, yet all made valuable contributions in areas such as stained glass, metalwork, pottery, woodcarving, illustration, bookbinding and decoration, sculpture, decorative embroidery, decorative jewellery, and illumination. This volume is the largest of its kind to document the lives and careers of some British women artists and decorative artists, published in Britain to date, and helps to shed new light on a still-neglected area of British art and design history. It includes entries for well-known artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Mary Lowndes, and Alice Woodward, alongside influential but forgotten women such as Mary Symonds, Amy Singer, and Catherine Donaldson. Researched and written by Dr. Sara Gray over a period of eight years, this book is her third to be published. She completed a B.A. Hons Degree in 1992 at Bolton University, followed by a Ph.D. in 2002 awarded by Manchester University. She has a particular interest in the work of British women artists and in regional arts and crafts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly essays on the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South Looking back at her lengthy career just four years before her death, modernist painter Nell Blaine said, "Art is central to my life. Not being able to make or see art would be a major deprivation." The Virginia native's creative path began early, and, during the course of her life, she overcame significant barriers in her quest to make and even see art, including serious vision problems, polio, and paralysis. And then there was her gender. In 1957 Blaine was hailed by Life magazine as someone to watch, profiled alongside four other emerging painters whom the journalist praised "not as notable women artists but as notable artists who happen to be women." In Central to Their Lives, twenty-six noted art historians offer scholarly insight into the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South. Spanning the decades between the late 1890s and early 1960s, this volume examines the complex challenges these artists faced in a traditionally conservative region during a period in which women's social, cultural, and political roles were being redefined and reinterpreted. The presentation—and its companion exhibition—features artists from all of the Southern states, including Dusti Bongé, Anne Goldthwaite, Anna Hyatt Huntington, Ida Kohlmeyer, Loïs Mailou Jones, Alma Thomas, and Helen Turner. These essays examine how the variables of historical gender norms, educational barriers, race, regionalism, sisterhood, suffrage, and modernism mitigated and motivated these women who were seeking expression on canvas or in clay. Whether working from studio space, in spare rooms at home, or on the world stage, these artists made remarkable contributions to the art world while fostering future generations of artists through instruction, incorporating new aesthetics into the fine arts, and challenging the status quo. Sylvia Yount, the Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, provides a foreword to the volume. Contributors: Sara C. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939, Scottish artist and sculptor J.D. Fergusson was commissioned to write a fully illustrated book on modern Scottish painting. The Second World War made this difficult and the first edition of Modern Scottish Painting was published in 1943 without illustrations. This new edition – edited, introduced and annotated by Alexander Moffat and Alan Riach – finally brings Fergusson's project to fruition, illustrating the argument with colour reproductions of Fergusson's own work. Moffat and Riach frame Fergusson's important art manifesto for the 21st-century reader, illuminating his views on modern art as he explores questions of technique, education, form and what it means for a painting to be truly modern. Fergusson relates these aspects of modern painting to Scottishness, showing what they mean for Scottish identity, nationalism, independence and the legacy that puritanical Calvinism has left on Scottish art – a particular concern for Fergusson given his recurring subject matter of the female nude.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old, Old Fairy Tales contains several of the best loved fairy-tales by true masters of the genre, including the Brother's Grimm's 'Briar Rose', 'The Frog Prince' and 'Rumplestiltskin', Charles Perrault's 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Blue Beard' and 'Puss in Boots' as well as Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid.' Old English tales such as 'Jack, the Giant Killer' are also encompassed. All of these wonderful tales are accompanied by colour, and black-and-white illustrations by Anne Anderson (1874-1930). She was a much celebrated Scottish illustrator, primarily known for her art nouveau children's book illustrations, although she also painted etched and designed greeting cards. These truly delicate and elegant works signalled the apogee of the Edwardian Era and the so-called 'golden age' of British illustration; as much appreciated today as they were then. The fairy-tales are presented here in their original translations, alongside Anderson's beautiful images. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.
