Book excerpt: The author takes us beyond the history books, into the real world of the Jewish Underground of the 1920s and 30s, before there was a State of Israel. Building on years of painstaking research of archival material plus in-depth interviews via participants who still recall those 'Wild West' years, Zev Golan reveals how the heroes of the Jewish people performed some less-than-heroic acts while chasing the Arab gangs and the entire British Empire off their land. These same heroes, heroines and rogues went on to become the elite leaders - Prime Ministers, Rabbis and world-famous scientists -- of the State of Israel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hijacked! is the story of Alix Kerensky, a Jewish Russian émigré, who sets sail on an SS Infinity’s “Voyage of Discovery”—along with 250 American college students. In this love story and psychological “thriller,” the unthinkable occurs when the Georgetown University teaching ship is hijacked by Abu Ghazi and the men of Jabal an-Nar, a group of Palestinian terrorists. Hijacked!—a complex tale of Middle East politics, romance, and adventure—chronicles a momentous period in American history. It is a eulogy for an era. We travel from Spring, 2000, a time of American optimism and innocence, to September 15, 2001, four days after Osama bin Laden’s attack on New York’s World Trade Center—a time when Americans came to realize that they were facing an enemy more elusive, a war more intractable, and a world far more dangerous, than any they had imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a development between expectation for the rebuilding of the New Jerusalem/Temple in the Old Testament and the coming of the New Jerusalem/Temple in Revelation. In Revelation, there is a dynamic relation between the New Jerusalem and the Heavenly Jerusalem: the New Jerusalem is the descent of the Heavenly Jerusalem. Moreover, there is no Temple building which was expected as the eschatological promise in the Old Testament but rather God and the Lamb is the Temple. How can this shift be explained? Pilchan Lee examines the exegetical tradition which existed between the Old Testament and Revelation. He assumes that as the exegetical tradition, the early Jewish (apocalyptic) literature functions as a key element for forming the idea of the New Jerusalem in Revelation. John's main argument is that the church (which is symbolized by several images) is placed in heaven now (chapters 4-20) and the church (which is symbolized by the New Jerusalem) will descend to the earth from heaven in the future (21-22).

Book excerpt: "Jerusalem Besieged is a fascinating account of how and why a baffling array of peoples, ideologies, and religions have fought for some four thousand years over a city without either great wealth, size, or strategic importance. Cline guides us through the baffling, but always bloody, array of Jewish, Roman, Moslem, Crusader, Ottoman, Western, Arab, and Israeli fights for possession of such a symbolic prize in a manner that is both scholarly and engaging." -Victor Davis Hanson, Stanford University; author of The Other Greeks and Carnage and Culture "A beautifully lucid presentation of four thousand years of history in a single volume. Cline writes primarily as an archaeologist-avoiding polemic and offering evidence for any religious claims-yet he has also incorporated much journalistic material into this study. Jerusalem Besieged will enlighten anyone interested in the history of military conflict in and around Jerusalem." -Col. Rose Mary Sheldon, Virginia Military Institute "This groundbreaking study offers a fascinating synthesis of Jerusalem's military history from its first occupation into the modern era. Cline amply deploys primary source material to investigate assaults on Jerusalem of every sort, starting at the dawn of recorded history. Jerusalem Besieged is invaluable for framing the contemporary situation in the Middle East in the context of a very long and pertinent history." -Baruch Halpern, Pennsylvania State University A sweeping history of four thousand years of struggle for control of one city "[An] absorbing account of archaeological history, from the ancient Israelites' first conquest to today's second intifada. Cline clearly lays out the fascinating history behind the conflicts." -USA Today "A pleasure to read, this work makes this important but complicated subject fascinating." -Jewish Book World "Jerusalem Besieged is a fascinating account of how and why a baffling array of peoples, ideologies, and religions have fought for some four thousand years over a city without either great wealth, size, or strategic importance. Book excerpt: The collection of poems in this 125 page anthology might be seen as a glimpse of the experiences of some in the Jesus Fellowship story. It certainly allows us to share in some of God's dealings with them along the way. It tells of a discovery of God which led a group of Christians to form something far bigger than any individual: An 'alternative society' where the New Testament became a living reality and God shaped many to become a people for His possession - His Zion, a city to dwell in.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Phi Alpha Theta Best Subsequent Book Award A Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist The captivating and definitive account of the Great Lisbon Earthquake--the most consequential natural disaster of modern times. On All Saints’ Day 1755, tremors from an earthquake measuring approximately 9.0 or perhaps higher on the magnitude scale swept furiously toward Lisbon, then one of the wealthiest cities in the world and the capital of a vast global empire. Within minutes, much of the city lay in ruins. A half hour later, a giant tsunami unleashed by the quake smashed into Portugal’s coastline and barreled up the Tagus River, carrying countless thousands out to sea. To complete Lisbon’s destruction, a hellacious firestorm then engulfed the city’s shattered remains, killing thousands more and incinerating much of what the earthquake and tsunami had spared. Drawing on a wealth of new sources, the latest scientific research, and a sophisticated grasp of European history, Mark Molesky gives us the gripping, authoritative account of the Great Lisbon Earthquake disaster and its impact on the Western world—including descriptions of the world’s first international relief effort, the rise of a brutal, yet modernizing, dictatorship in Portugal, and the effect of the catastrophe on the spirit and direction of the European Enlightenment.
