Book excerpt: Chasing the Killer Comet begins with the introduction of a heroic 13-year-old girl named Jennifer Thompson, whose life is turned upside down when a mysterious new housekeeper enters her life, with outlandish predictions for Jenny's immediate future. The accidental discovery of a wondrous garment that has the ability to defy the laws of gravity, adds to the recent intrigue in Jenny's life. A traveler from another planet within our galaxy is the owner of the gravity displacement suit. The alien's planet has a shortage of water and they have visited Earth for thousands of years, collecting and transporting water back home. The story also involves the global discovery of an impending catastrophic disaster; a massive comet is hurtling through space on a collision course with Earth. Our planet is not capable or prepared to avert this disastrous event. Jenny realizes that Earth's only chance for survival lies with her and her link to the technologically superior alien being. With the housekeeper's guidance, they formulate a plan of action and make contact with the alien. Jenny uses the valuable suit as her main bargaining tool in her attempt to convince the alien to help her. She is terrified about the prospect of having to make contact with an alien, but it is Earth's only chance for survival, so Jenny courageously shoulders the responsibility. She makes contact and convinces the shy alien to look into the possibility of undertaking this dangerous mission. The alien likes Jenny and takes pity on her, and they devise a risky plan to move the mountain-sized mass of ice and rock away from its disastrous course. Join them on their exciting mission, as they race against time, and Chase the Killer Comet.

Book excerpt: A genre-warping, time-travelling horror novel-slash-feminist manifesto for fans of Clarice Lispector and Jeanette Winterson. Welcome to 1990s Norway. White picket fences run in neat rows and Christian conservatism runs deep. But as the Artist considers her work, things start stirring themselves up. In a corner of Oslo a coven of witches begin cooking up some curses. A time-travelling Edvard Munch arrives in town to join a death metal band, closely pursued by the teenaged subject of his painting Puberty, who has murder on her mind. Meanwhile, out deep in the forest, a group of school girls get very lost and things get very strange. And awful things happen in aspic. Jenny Hval's latest novel is a radical fusion of queer feminist theory and experimental horror, and a unique treatise on magic, writing and art. "Strange and lyrical. Hval’s writing is surreal and rich with the grotesque banalities of human existence." —Publishers Weekly "The themes of alienation, queerness, and the unsettling nature of desire align Hval with modern mainstays like Chris Kraus, Ottessa Moshfegh, and Maggie Nelson." —Pitchfork

Ten years after Earth sent messages out into deep space, there has been an answer. Music from distant planet Pud 5 has reached the world’s radios. Are aliens about to invade? No one knows, and almost-eighteen-year-old Derek doesn’t really care, because at a wild end-of-the-world party, Jennifer Novak invited him to play beer pong, and things, well, progressed from there. Derek is in love. Deeply, hopelessly in love. He wants it all — marriage, kids, growing old on a beach in Costa Rica. For him, Jenny is the One. But Jenny has other plans, which may or may not include Derek. So Derek will try anything to win her — even soliciting advice from an alien who shows up in his hometown. This alien may just be the answer to Derek’s problem, but is Derek prepared to risk starting an intergalactic war to get his girl? Just how far is he willing to travel to discover the mysteries of the universe — and the enigma of love?

Book excerpt: Poetry. Asian American Studies. "Jenny Zhang's poems broadcast themselves with a surrealist anxiety. 'Can't I be my own dream?' she asks. The answer is always yes and always no. With dizzying energy and intelligence, Zhang forages through familial, global, and even anatomical configurations vainly outlining an identity that manifests only to shift and move restlessly on. This book brings to mind a 21st century Whitman, only female, Chinese, and profoundly scatological." Elizabeth Robinson"
