Twenty years working undercover in the netherworld of drugs had left him burned out and grateful to assume the quiet job of police chief in the small town of Reminderville, Ohio. That is, until a simple domestic assault case turns out to have links to the murder of a drug runner in upstate New York and a syndicate smuggling billions of dollars in drugs across the U.S.-Canada border. As Buck reluctantly plunges back into his old world of death and deceit, he uncovers a complex chain linking the Hells Angels to the Russian Mafia in a plot to use Native American tribal land to smuggle their deadly wares into the United States. From grow houses set ablaze in Quebec to the insular St. Regis Mohawk Indian Reservation, from board rooms and biker wars to the frozen rivers that serve as private turnpikes for the drug gangs, Buck opposes a serpentine criminal enterprise that has every reason to want to end his crusade in violence and bloodshed. Ultimately, his efforts lead to an unprecedented slew of indictments on both sides of the border and prison terms for even the kingpins, toppling an empire once deemed invincible. Takedown spans the period of December 2007 to June 2009.

Book excerpt: This heartfelt, deeply personal memoir explores how a celebrated filmmaker and activist and his conservative Mormon mother built bridges across today’s great divides—and how our stories hold the power to heal. • Adapted as an HBO documentary now streaming on HBO Max. “A beautifully written, utterly compelling account of growing up poor and gay with a thrice married, physically disabled, deeply religious Mormon mother, and the imprint this irrepressible woman made on the character of Dustin Lance Black.” —Jon Krakauer, bestselling author of Missoula and Under the Banner of Heaven Dustin Lance Black wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for Milk and helped overturn California’s anti–gay marriage Proposition 8, but as an LGBTQ activist he has unlikely origins—a conservative Mormon household outside San Antonio, Texas. There he was raised by a single mother who, as a survivor of childhood polio, endured brutal surgeries as well as braces and crutches for life. Despite the abuse and violence of two questionably devised Mormon marriages, she imbued Lance with her inner strength and irrepressible optimism. When Lance came out to his mother at age twenty-one, she initially derided his sexuality as a sinful choice. It may seem like theirs was a house destined to be divided—and at times it was. But in the end, they did not let their differences define them or the relationship that had inspired two remarkable lives. This heartfelt, deeply personal memoir explores how a mother and son built bridges across great cultural divides—and how our stories hold the power to heal.

Book excerpt: Jeff Currie first suspected surveillance during a trial in Austin. He’s an attorney who isn’t afraid of dangerous cases, and those dangerous cases seem to have made him a target—but for whom? Jeff has no clue who could be watching; he also has no idea how to prove he’s being watched. It’s more a feeling than anything else, a paranoid suspicion. But he’s not just being paranoid. After accepting a particularly high-risk case, Jeff begins to notice the opposing counsel and even trial judge know about things happening in his hotel room. His legal strategy isn’t secret either, and although he works as hard as possible for his new client, victory seems insurmountable as even Jeff’s most private moments are revealed. Although Jeff reports his suspicions to another attorney, there’s nothing to be done except find whomever is responsible for the surveillance and stop them. Jeff worries, though, that his enemies might actually be cops due to a past case. If so, what then? When Jeff has no evidence of a crime being committed against him, how is it possible for him to seek justice?

Mark, a Special Forces soldier known to his brother soldiers as TK, The Killer, has his world turned upside down while deployed overseas. His fiancée, Katie, is kidnapped, raped, and killed by a serial killer. He comes home to find the police have a few leads but no hard evidence against the guy they believe to be the man that did the crime. In his outrage, Mark tracks the guy down only to find another girl dead. He becomes the man the military trained, TK. The cops are close, and TK has the man down in a field beating him to death. In the last moment as police approach, he shoots the rapist/murderer three times in the chest. He himself has now crossed from victim to murderer and finds himself in prison for life. Prison doesn’t go well for Mark. He won’t join the skinhead group that immediately takes notice of him. He just wants to be left alone. Shortly, he finds himself fighting for his life. With each prisoner TK kills, his sentence gets longer. All seems to be lost for Mark as he recovers from the latest fight in the prison hospital. Until a State Department guy walks in and offers Mark a new life. This mystery man, Troy Place, offers Mark a new job as a fixer. Mark refuses life as an assassin at first, but Troy quickly explains the job is much more than just that. The job is protecting America from its worst enemies, the untouchable ones. The twist with Mark’s missions is that they need to look like anything but an assassination. They can’t look anything like an American-sponsored hit. Mark leaves prison that day with a new career and freedom. He soon finds that his job will not be dull. The world is full of people that hate America and want to hurt its people and its way of life. His first mission sends him to Libya to track and kill a guy financing terrorists seeking to destroy Washington, DC. What seems to be a simple task soon turns to chaos. The series jumps from one crazy mission to the other. Each book putting Mark (TK) into dangerous situations and almost impossible missions. Mark proves himself cunning and valuable each time. Every mission has two objectives, kill the enemy and make it look like something else. It takes every bit of Mark’s training and imagination to do the job well. As he goes along, he finds friends to help him and unexpected allies when he needs them the most. Enjoy the stories.

Book excerpt: Meet the Henderson family: Jeff, a struggling salesman who lives with a constant nagging fear that something will happen to his family; Will, who’s just trying to figure out life in the fifth grade; Emily whose greatest concern is that she won’t be nominated homecoming queen; and Amy, who is growing stir-crazy from being a housewife of eighteen years—and is convinced this was God’s plan B for her life. The Hendersons are longtime residents of Goodland, Kansas, a small Midwest town where nothing new or exciting ever happens … until now. Are the recent “weird” happenings and catastrophic weather mere coincidence, or more? The town spirals into chaos and confusion as its residents discover the end is no longer near—the end is now. Rob Stennett’s second novel is both a satire and a story of the apocalypse, a thriller and an exploration of family, community, belief, unbelief, and the two thousand-year-old Christian tradition of looking to the sky because the end is near.

Book excerpt: Where exactly does the South begin and end? Current maps are too rigid to account for the ways Black people have built the South while being simultaneously excluded from it. Drawing from the different ways Black artists in the 2-5-2 area code in North Carolina use "vibe" as a mode of knowing and communication, author Corey J. Miles illustrates how Black feeling and unfeeling offer entry points into the contemporary South that challenge static and monolithic notions of the region. Placing the local artists in conversation with other southern cultural creators such as 2 Chainz, Rod Wave, and Rapsody, these ethnographic narratives demonstrate that there are multiple Souths, with overlapping and distinct commitments to working through pain, sound, and belonging. In Vibe: The Sound and Feeling of Black Life in the American South, Miles narrates how southern Black sound, feeling, and being is constantly policed, surveilled, and criminalized. In doing so, he re-narrates the region as the "carceral South," to capture the ways people in the South and beyond can feel the emotional weight of the criminalization of Blackness. Pain music, a subgenre of trap music, is used to take the listener to moments of violence to allow them to hear the desires, anger, and silences that bind Black life in community. Through conceptions of ratchet, hood, and ghetto, Black artists turn away from respectable images and unmap the South. In trap music, they move the South to a space where multiple modes of being find respect and care.

Book excerpt: In the final book in the Infected trilogy, the entire human race balances on the razor’s edge of annihilation, beset by an enemy that turns our own bodies against us, that changes normal people into psychopaths or transforms them into nightmares. To some, Doctor Margaret Montoya is a hero—a brilliant scientist who saved the human race from an alien intelligence determined to exterminate all of humanity. To others, she’s a monster—a mass murderer single-handedly responsible for the worst atrocity ever to take place on American soil. All Margaret knows is that she’s broken. The blood of a million deaths is on her hands. Guilt and nightmares have turned her into a shut-in, too mired in self-hatred even to salvage her marriage, let alone be the warrior she once was. But she is about to be called into action again. Because before the murderous intelligence was destroyed, it launched one last payload: a soda can–sized container filled with deadly microorganisms that make humans feed upon their own kind. That harmless-looking container has languished a thousand feet below the surface of Lake Michigan, undisturbed and impotent . . . until now. Part Cthulhu epic, part zombie apocalypse and part blockbuster alien-invasion tale, Pandemic completes the Infected trilogy and sets a new high-water mark in the world of horror fiction.
