Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DISOWNED by her family. EJECTED from a life of privilege to one of abject servitude. FORCED to participate in a duel with only two results: death for the loser, power for the victor. After watching her brother, Artka, march off to war against Ecclessa, Jeda is unexpectedly forced from her family home. Sentenced to a life of service, she is sent to the courts of the Emperor. Jeda fears she will be forced to a life of drudgery-or worse. But when Jeda is scrutinized by the sinister Hod-ya she soon learns that she has been selected for the deadly "Scarth and Avangar" duels in Pitland. Jeda must either submit to Hod-ya's depraved training and learn to draw on dark powers to fight, or resist the pressure to conform and allow herself to be victimized. Will Logon Xychirion intervene and send a brigade to attempt Jeda's rescue? Jeda's journey INTO THE GLOOM takes her from the emperor's dungeons through the menacing Ra-Amawl forest where an ancient evil roams, and ultimately toward the foul, depraved land of Pitland. Jeda soon discovers that evil is even more prevalent and powerful than she could have imagined. How can those who hope in goodness survive, much less overcome, wickedness?

Book excerpt: About the Book Near On is about the duality of all people. We're all good and bad- even the best of us. Interwoven in the book are three main elements: 1) Loss - The author’s best friend lost his daughter at a very young age to brain cancer and he explores how we all experience grief differently throughout different points in our life. 2) Racism - As an African American man, the author wanted to look at the subtleties of racism he has experienced and give a different point of view of how we ALL wrong each other in small - not "in your face"- ways. 3) The Multiverse - He explores a fascinating topic that we know little to nothing about. There are many times in the story where there aren't clear cut answers - much like the reality of things. This is the first of three books the author has planned in this realm. The story is unique and compelling because the characters are relatable. The writing is designed to be grounded. The dialog is in a fashion where people talk to each other in the real world and people behave in a "normal" way. About the Author Ocean Strata grew up in Santa Monica, California, in a not-so-great neighborhood where he was raised by a single mom. Most kids left to their own devices may have gotten into trouble, but Strata chose to go to the library and read most days. He went to USC on an academic scholarship and graduated from Marshall School of Business. Strata found joy and peace in writing and in the technology industry. As a black man in sales and corporate America, he has experienced both beautiful behavior and sub-par behavior. He feels that all of his experiences drove his passion to tell a story about the middle ground - about the grey. He met his wife in banking, and they now have twin toddlers - a boy and a girl - his hardest job to date.

Book excerpt: After King Elyon’s son, Prince Logon Xychirion, constructed a bridge over the Flaming Sword River, countless Carnalians have successfully escaped the doomed empire and found safety in the kingdom of Ecclessa. But the bridge is also rumored to be the entrance that King Elyon’s troops need to free Carnalia and regain his rightful ownership of the kingdom and its surrounding lands. Not to be overthrown, the evil emperor of Carnalia has set his sights on the narrow bridge and has plans to destroy those loyal to King Elyon once and for all. As the Carnalian military make their plans for war, Artka and his brigade are ready to continue with Prince Logon’s plan, with Jeda and Bonu setting their sights on Logon’s Bridge and beyond. But things are not going as the brave troop hopes. As they near the ultimate battle between Ecclessa and Carnalia, they will be asked to risk their lives for a greater cause.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Saltire Society Fiction Book of the Year 'a beguiling mixture of poetry, moving prose and magical realism' - Stephen McGinty, The Sunday Times Jeda is a girl on the cusp of adulthood, living in Edinburgh; with a white father and a black mother, she feels self-conscious and out of place. Her feelings of alienation allow the stories of the shapeshifting Shadowman, who embodies all that is negative, to feed on her doubts and insecurities. The death of her mother, Rahami, gives the Shadowman an opportunity to control Jeda through her grief and his lies, but her mother's last gift to her daughter was a box of stories. When the box is flung open, the stories escape, setting in motion an incredible journey. Jeda learns more about her African ancestry through tales of slavery, cruelty and colonisation, but she also discovers pride and love and sacrifice, ultimately embracing her dual heritage and her unique place in the world. Filled with tragedy, wonder and magic, Blood and Gold explores the themes of loss and oppression, while asking us to examine our own identities, attitudes, and humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As pervasive violence shatters our nation, the call for values echoes through headlines and school hallways as educators, parents and children become increasingly concerned and affected. The Living Values series offers a variety of experiential activities for teachers and parents to help them teach children and young adults to develop twelve critical social values: cooperation, freedom, happiness, honesty, humility, love, peace, respect, responsibility, simplicity, tolerance and unity. In each book, these twelve values are explored using age-appropriate lessons that incorporate group discussions, reading, quiet reflection time, songs, artwork and action-oriented activities. These lessons are already in use in more than 1,000 locations in sixty-two countries. Pilot results indicate that students are enthusiastic and teachers report a decrease in aggressive behavior and more motivated students. The Living Values Educational Program was born when twenty educators from around the world gathered at UNICEF Headquarters in New York in 1996 to discuss the needs of children and how to better prepare students for lifelong success. These global educators identified the curriculum and the program was ready for piloting in February of 1997.
