Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Critique of the Arts Submitted by Li Ying Kit for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2005 This thesis is about Jean-Jacques Rousseau's critique of the arts. Rousseau, having chiefly been regarded as a political thinker by virtue of the Social Contract-his pre-eminent masterpiece in the history of political philosophy-has a further remarkable yet neglected aspect of his thought wanting to be explored, systematically. That is his reaction to the unparalleled advancement of the sciences and the arts from the early seventeenth century onwards; to the values of the Enlightenment has begun to take shape as the essence of the modern life in the eighteenth century; and to the optimism gaining much sway in the minds of modern men who prided themselves over their ancient counterparts, believing in the liberation of themselves by human workmanship. His reaction to all this consummates itself in his critique of the arts. - 1 - Assuming his critique of the arts as the subject of the present enquiry, I want to achieve certain things. First of all, through elaborating on the notion of the arts in various senses scattered throughout the works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, I strive at reconstructing the logic behind his critique from the identification of the problems of modern culture to the search for possible solutions. More precisely, this thesis argues that his critique of the arts is tantamount to an internal critique of the modern culture, in which Rousseau expresses his deep concerns, and informed pessimism, of the morals of men. Secondly, I shall trace back his theoretical basis upon which he anchors his diagnosis of as well as reaction to the problems of modernity, and his indebtedness from the well-known debate held between Plato and Aristotle over the arts, prior to formulating his own antidote. Needless to say, this study of his serious contributions to the discussion of the arts aims at breaking down the overwhelming stereotype of Rousseau as a political theorist, and at the same time unfolding his profundity as to a less visited yet important domain. It argues concisely but eloquently, that the basis of any legitimate society must be the agreement of its members. As humans we were 'born free' and our subjection to government must be freely accepted. Rousseau is essentially a radical thinker, and in a broad sense a revolutionary. He insisted on the sovereignty of the people, and made some provocative statements that are still highly controversial. His greatest contribution to political thought is the concept of the general will, which unites individuals through their common self-interest, thus validating the society in which they live and the constraints it imposes on them. This new translation is fully annotated and indexed. The volume also contains the opening chapter of the manuscript version of the Contract, together with the long article on Political Economy, a work traditionally between the Contract and Rousseau's earlier masterpiece, the Discourse on Inequality.
