Book excerpt: Roger Harvey decided to leave the crowded underground train at Balham station and take the bus the rest of the way to the old War Office in Whitehall. As he was exiting the train, a youth bumped into him, shoved a pink plastic carrier bag into his hand, and disappeared into the crowd. Just as Roger was about to reach the street, a young woman came rushing in the opposite direction, collided with him, and fell heavily to the ground, winded. He helped the girl to her feet and, feeling sorry for her, suggested they have a coffee at the coffee house next to the station. When their drinks arrived, the girl noticed the plastic carrier bag Roger was still holding and asked about it. Inside, Roger found several sheets covered in chemical formulas that the girl recognized as potentially hazardous. As a military intelligence officer working for a supposedly non-existent government security department, Roger decided that the girl, whose name he had learned was Jasmine, and the chemicals deserved investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christie is happy in her life... or so she tells herself. Despite a tragic childhood, she has built a satisfying career and loves her city apartment. But deep down she yearns for a simpler life. Family. A garden. And a place to heal her heart. The decision to attend a funeral in a town she's never heard of throws her safe world into disarray, exposing the cracks in her life. As she deals with the fallout, Christie moves into a rundown cottage she's inherited and there, makes a discovery. A damaged painting. Unworn wedding rings. And a shoebox full of unopened love letters. Fifty years ago, a heartbroken young artist waited each dawn on a jetty for his true love to return. And each night, he wrote her a love letter. What Christie uncovers will change her life forever. This is a beautiful tale of love - sometimes lost, sometimes found and sometimes both. This is also a book with a mystery to solve which keeps your interest in the story. The author did an amazing job writing this book. The characters were well developed, the story was unique, and the descriptions helped you to feel the emotions, smell the scents, and visualize the persons, places and objects. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy romance with a bit of mystery and a HEA. Karen Thurmer. Book excerpt: Minion or Master is a fast paced thriller set in 1966 that interweaves different story lines and characters leaving the reader in suspense as each section ends until the final conclusion. The story subtly develops the Minion or Master concept whilst exploring relationships between father and son, pimp and prostitute, gang leaders and gang members, civil servant and business man as well as romantic involvement. George Howden, a young inexperienced businessman working in Bermuda is forced by circumstance to try to defeat a prostitution and drugs gang in New York. His business involvement with the ship Ocean Star makes him an accessory in smuggling chrome ore out of Africa and smuggling armaments for terrorists into Africa. George gets involved with a number of believable well drawn characters who are mixed up with murder, sex, blackmail, government power politics, drug smuggling, drug dependency and romance. The story describes how he and others build relationships to last a lifetime and how some get destroyed. The action starts in Africa and moves seamlessly between Bermuda, New York, and the Atlantic Ocean. Minion or Master is the first in a series of thrillers featuring George Howden and Adrian Cuthbert covering the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1943 battle to free the Soviet Black Sea port of Novorossiisk from German occupation was fought from the beach head of Malaia zemlia, where the young Colonel Leonid Brezhnev saw action. Despite widespread scepticism of the state's appropriation and inflation of this historical event, the heroes of the campaign are still commemorated in Novorossiisk today by an amalgam of memoir, monuments and ritual. Through the prism of this provincial Russian town, Vicky Davis sheds light on the character of Brezhnev as perceived by his people, and on the process of memory for the ordinary Russian citizen. Davis analyses the construction and propagation of the local war myth to link the individual citizens of Novorossiisk with evolving state policy since World War II and examines the resultant social and political connotations. Her compelling new interdisciplinary evidence reveals the complexity of myth and memory, challenging existing assumptions to show that there is still scope for the local community - and even the individual - in memory construction in an authoritarian environment. This book represents a much-needed departure from the study of myth and memory in larger cities of the former Soviet Union, adding nuance to the existing portrait of Brezhnev and demonstrating the continued importance of war memory in Russia today.
