Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK It is only when we overcome our disabilities that wreck our minds sanity Feelings of envy, jealousy and hatred and win them over with laurels of love and hope, our daily accomplishments over disappointments will we be able to encounter God in our daily steps as we walk towards that holy land to become his many pilgrims of peace, love, harmony and joyfulness. Turning INTO the ‘LIGHT OF THE WORLD!’ Another interesting derivative of ‘OR’ is the Hebrew root ‘ro-eh’, made with the letters ‘Reysh’ ‘Alef’ ‘Hey’. It includes the same letters as in ‘OR’ like an ORACLE of truth and upholding secrets of a secret garden nonetheless EDEN or PARADISE! The biblical prophet, the seer, is called in Hebrew ‘ro-eh’, which also comes from ‘OR’, ‘LIGHT’ and like the wind soughing through the trees in a mystical secret place where wilderness thrives and yet is a secret to all mankind. In the second chapter of the Book of Genesis, there appears for the first time a reference about the ‘Garden of Eden’ “And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of LIFE was in the midst of the garden, like the Dwarf apple tree in the middle of my book secret garden and all its beautiful characters, Mary, Dickon, Colin, the gardener Ben Weatherstaff and the magical creatures, many more poems and role roles to play their parts within my story book, with the magical robin bird beholding the secret key. The Tree was the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers! (GENESIS 2:8-11) The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold! This is why it is no surprise to discover the Hebrew term for ‘Heaven’ or ‘Paradise’ is in fact ‘Gan Eden’ {גן עדן} – meaning the Garden of Eden…The Secret Garden! By Frances Hodgson Burnett penned by Leoni Robens in her own imaginative, soul nourishing, masterful and creative style!

Book excerpt: Underwater exploration is a fascinating activity because of the richness of sea life, the beautiful colors, and the contrast with terrestrial life. It can be done by diving or snorkeling -today there is fine equipment for diving and taking underwater pictures and, apart from being a source of pleasure, it forms the basis of modern ecological and behavioral marine studies. Diving is an emotional activity. The silence of the submarine world, only interrupted by breathing, has more than once evoked the monsters of the fabulous tales of my youth. Maybe because, although much time has elapsed since then, I still have a youth's ability to evaluate everything for the fascination it conveys. However, no more than that can be gained from underwater watehing. I am not saying that this is destined to be a futile exercise. Picasso watched sea urchins much in the same way while revealing their quintessence in his paintings at the Castle of Antibes. What I mean is that today marine life can also be viewed from the perspective of the natural products involved. This knowledge, subsequent to Picasso's time, adds much to the overall picture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mostly tiny, infinitely delicate, and short-lived, insects and their relatives—arthropods—nonetheless outnumber all their fellow creatures on earth. How lowly arthropods achieved this unlikely preeminence is a story deftly and colorfully told in this follow-up to the award-winning For Love of Insects. Part handbook, part field guide, part photo album, Secret Weapons chronicles the diverse and often astonishing defensive strategies that have allowed insects, spiders, scorpions, and other many-legged creatures not just to survive, but to thrive. In 69 chapters, each brilliantly illustrated with photographs culled from Thomas Eisner’s legendary collection, we meet a largely North American cast of arthropods—as well as a few of their kin from Australia, Europe, and Asia—and observe at firsthand the nature and extent of the defenses that lie at the root of their evolutionary success. Here are the cockroaches and termites, the carpenter ants and honeybees, and all the miniature creatures in between, deploying their sprays and venom, froth and feces, camouflage and sticky coatings. And along with a marvelous bug’s-eye view of how these secret weapons actually work, here is a close-up look at the science behind them, from taxonomy to chemical formulas, as well as an appendix with instructions for studying chemical defenses at home. Whether dipped into here and there or read cover-to-cover, Secret Weapons will prove invaluable to hands-on researchers and amateur naturalists alike, and will captivate any reader for whom nature is a source of wonder.

Book excerpt: Discover the uses and symbolic meanings of flowers over the centuries and across the globe. Flowers have been depicted as objects of beauty and wonder in countless paintings and poems, exchanged as tokens of love and affection, and displayed as symbols of both celebration and remembrance – “saying it with flowers” is truly part of the human experience. But how does the significance of flowers vary across cultures and at different points in history? And what makes certain flowers special? The Secret Language of Flowers explores the meaning of more than 85 flowers, tracing their history as symbols and charting their role in folklore and mythology around the world. This fascinating book on flowers can help you to: - Unlock the meaning of flowers throughout history – from early peoples to the 19th century. - Discover the Victorian language of flowers popular in the US, UK, and Europe. - Gain insight into folklore and mythology in relation to different flowers. - Uncover what flowers mean in various cultures around the world. - Uncover traditional medicinal uses of plants, such as aloe, which is used to treat burns. Uncover the rich and fascinating histories of individual flowers – the sunflower, for example, which was regarded by the Aztecs as a symbol of war, but became a symbol of devotion in 19th-century painting due to the fact that it “turns its head” to follow the sun. Learn about the function of flowers in society, from the practical to the playful – flowers have been used as remedies and tonics – tea tree and coneflower (or echinacea), for example – as well as as a means of sending cryptic messages to lovers and friends. The Secret Language of Flowers is an entertaining guide to the rich stories that lie beyond the seductive aromas and dazzling beauty of flowers of all kinds. Each flower featured throughout the book is arranged by season, from the first snowdrops and primroses of spring, the glorious roses of summer, the stunning fuchsias and dahlias of autumn to the holly and poinsettia of the winter months, there’s a flower for everyone to fall in love with.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating for Sustainable Development (ESD) approaches are holistic and interdisciplinary, values-driven, participatory, multi-method, locally relevant and emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving. This book explains how ESD approaches work in the Japanese context; their effects on different stakeholders; and their ultimate potential contribution to society in Japan. It considers ESD in both formal and informal education sectors, recognizing that even when classroom learning takes place it must be place-based and predicated on a specific community context. The book explores not only ‘Why ESD’, but why and how ESD in Japan has gained importance in the past decade and more recently in the wake of the triple disaster of March 2011. It considers how ESD can help Japan recover and adapt to disasters and take initiative in building more resilient and sustainable communities. This volume asks the questions: What are some examples of positive contributions by ESD to sustainability in Japan? What is the role of ESD in Japan in activating people to demand and work towards change? How can schools, universities and non-governmental organizations link with communities to strengthen civic awareness and community action? After an introduction that elucidates the roots and recent promotion of ESD in Japan, part one of this volume looks at the formal education sector in Japan, while part two examines community-based education and sustainability initiatives. The latter revisits the Tohoku region five years on from the events of March 2011, to explore recovery and revitalization efforts by schools, NGOs and residents. This is an invaluable book for postgraduate students, researchers, teachers and policy makers working on ESD.
