This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the rise in public debt, Japanese Government Bond (JGB) yields have remained low and stable, supported by steady inflows from the household and corporate sectors, high domestic ownership of JGBs, and safe-haven flows from heightened sovereign risks in Europe. Over time, however, the market's capacity to absorb new debt will likely shrink as population ages and risk appetite recovers. In the short term, a decline in fund supply from the corporate sector, where financial surpluses are abnormally high, and spillovers from global financial distress could push up JGB yields. Fiscal reforms to reduce public debt more quickly and lengthen the maturity of government bonds will help limit these risks.

Book excerpt: Despite its prominence in world finance, Japan's stock market has remained an enigma to many investors. This book aims to remove the mystery, revealing how Japanese corporations have moulded the market into a cheap source of capital; why most shares of corporations are held by other corporations; what the Keiretsu - secretive stockbroking, insurance and banking cartels - really do; and how the market's 1990 collapse affected these interlocking relationships.

Written by leading analysts from the prestigious Nomura Group, this authoritative second edition explains these changes and their consequences for the current structure and operation of the country's financial markets. The book is arranged in four main sections: Part one provides an overview of the recent performance of Japan's financial markets, the crisis in the 1990s, government reforms and the subsequent 'Big Bang' in the country's financial system. Part two looks at the range of participants in the market, from individual investors, public sector and corporate pension funds to investment trusts, government bond issues and the equity market. This section of the book also discusses cross-border money flows, monetary policy and the regulatory framework. Part three discusses the markets themselves, covering the money and bond markets, trading in equities and securities and the venture capital market. Part four considers current problems and likely future developments in the financial system. Firms choosing Japanese underwriters tend to be Japanese, riskier, and smaller. Japanese underwriting fees, while higher overall on average, are actually lower after conditioning for issuer characteristics. The authors conducted a matching exercise to examine the 1995 liberalization of foreign access to the ¿Samurai¿ bond market, using yen-denominated issues in the euro-yen market as a control. Foreign entry led to a significant decrease in underwriting fees in the Samurai bond market. The market for underwriting services is segmented by nationality, as issuers appear to have preferred habitats. Illus.

This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative easing could improve market liquidity through many channels such as relaxing bank funding constraints, increasing risk appetite, and facilitating trades. However, it can also reduce market liquidity when the increase in the central bank’s holdings of certain securities leads to a scarcity of those securities and hence higher search costs in the market. Using security-level data from the Japanese government bond (JGB) market, this paper finds evidence of the scarcity (flow) effects of the Bank of Japan (BOJ)’s JGB purchases on market liquidity. Moreover, we also find evidence that such scarcity effects could dominate other effects when the share of the BOJ’s holdings exceeds certain thresholds, suggesting that the flow effects may also depend on the stock.
