Its representation of the underside of domestic life and the hypocrisy behind religious enthusiasm drew both praise and bitter criticism, while Charlotte Brontë's striking expose of poor living conditions for children in charity schools as well as her poignant portrayal of the limitations faced by women who worked as governesses sparked great controversy and social debate. Book excerpt: “At the end we are steeped through and through with the genius, the vehemence, the indignation of Charlotte Brontë'”-Virginia Woolf “Given the action of Jane Eyre, which is in every sense dramatic, there is a pull, all the same, between action and consciousness.-Raymond Williams “Teaching the true strength of character for generations.”-The Guardian Jane Eyre, (1847) the first novel from Charlotte Brontë, originally published under the pen name “Currer Bell” was an immediate commercial and literary success. This classic work was unprecedented in its forthright reproach towards Victorian social norms, moral duty, and gender inequality; It is likewise one of the most extraordinary stories of love and freedom in the English language. Jane Eyre, which follows a young woman’s passageway into adulthood and the unfolding of her interior emotional states, is a singular work of genre-defying fiction. Its story begins as the eponymous heroine is orphaned and under the care of her aunt, Mrs. Reed, a well-to-do yet heartless guardian. Jane is unfairly punished, and locked into “the red room”, where she collapses in fright after an encounter with the apparent ghost of her deceased Uncle Reed. Following the incident, Jane’s aunt sends her away to “Lowood”, an oppressive school run by the abusive and fraudulent headmaster, Mr. Brocklehurst. After an outbreak of typhoid devastates the school, a new kindly administration is installed. Jane’s life finally turns around; she remains at the school for six years and eventually becomes an instructor. After teaching for several years, Jane takes a position as a governess at Thornfield, the residence of the unbridled yet elegant Edward Rochester. As Jane embraces her duties at the estate, she begins to fall in love with her employer, and much to her surprise he asks for her hand in marriage. On the wedding day it is revealed that Edward possesses deep and dark secrets, and Jane flees for the sake of her own emotional integrity. In the ensuing experiences of her retreat, Jane confronts the procession of experiences and the formidable trials of her new life with the command of her unyielding self-determination. A startling modern classic of pronto-feminism, Jane Eyre is one of the most ingenious romance novels ever written. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Jane Eyre is both modern and readable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Eyre is the most famous and the most popular of the great works by the three BrontE sisters. It has everything: Ghosts, mysterious characters, fantastic events, witchcraft and extreme cruelty. This is not to mention the insane wife locked up in the attic. Jane Eyre describes itself as an autobiography but it is not really as Jane Eyre was a fictional person. However, Jane Eyre is semi-autobiographical as many of the events of the life of Jane Eyre were the same or similar to events in the life of Charlotte BrontE. The parents of Jane Eyre have both died shortly after Jane was born. Jane went to live with an aunt and uncle but is treated badly by them, worse than even the lowest servant would be treated. One characteristic of all of the Bronte books is the women protagonists are all living in a huge but mysterious mansion. They are living a life which many readers would aspire to have. Jane Eyre is treated so badly that when her aunt proposes to send her to an orphanage for poor girls, Jane readily accepts. Jane makes friends with Helen, a girl in the orphanage, but when Helen dies Jane is distressed. This is believed to be parallel with the real events when two of the sisters of Charlotte Bronte, Maria and Elizabeth, died of tuberculosis when they were living together in a boarding school. Later it turns out that Jane should not have been impoverished or destitute at all. She had an uncle, John Eyre, who had written a letter to her aunt asking that Jane be sent to live with him and offering to will his entire considerable estate to Jane. Instead of telling Jane about this, the aunt had written back to John Eyre saying that Jane had died while living at Lowood Hall. Now, on her death bed, knowing she will be sent to Hell for this crime, the aunt summons Jane Eyre and gives her the letter. This book is in Large Print Edition. The Fonts are 16-point type, nearly double the size of typical book printing. This is to make the book more comfortable and easier to read.

Book excerpt: CHAPTER IThere was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had beenwandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; butsince dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the coldwinter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and a rain sopenetrating, that further out-door exercise was now out of the question.I was glad of it: I never liked long walks, especially on chillyafternoons: dreadful to me was the coming home in the raw twilight, withnipped fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the chidings of Bessie, the nurse, and humbled by the consciousness of my physical inferiority toEliza, John, and Georgiana Reed. The said Eliza, John, and Georgiana were now clustered round their mamain the drawing-room: she lay reclined on a sofa by the fireside, and withher darlings about her (for the time neither quarrelling nor crying)looked perfectly happy. Me, she had dispensed from joining the group;saying, "She regretted to be under the necessity of keeping me at adistance; but that until she heard from Bessie, and could discover by herown observation, that I was endeavouring in good earnest to acquire amore sociable and childlike disposition, a more attractive and sprightlymanner--something lighter, franker, more natural, as it were--she reallymust exclude me from privileges intended only for contented, happy, little children.""What does Bessie say I have done?" I asked."Jane, I don't like cavillers or questioners; besides, there is somethingtruly forbidding in a child taking up her elders in that manner. Beseated somewhere; and until you can speak pleasantly, remain silent."A breakfast-room adjoined the drawing-room, I slipped in there. Itcontained a bookcase: I soon possessed myself of a volume, taking carethat it should be one stored with pictures. I mounted into the window-seat: gathering up my feet, I sat cross-legged, like a Turk; and, havingdrawn the red moreen curtain nearly close, I was shrined in doubleretirement.Folds of scarlet drapery shut in my view to the right hand; to the leftwere the clear panes of glass, protecting, but not separating me from thedrear November day. At intervals, while turning over the leaves of mybook, I studied the aspect of that winter afternoon. Afar, it offered apale blank of mist and cloud; near a scene of wet lawn and storm-beatshrub, with ceaseless rain sweeping away wildly before a long andlamentable blast.I returned to my book--Bewick's History of British Birds: the letterpressthereof I cared little for, generally speaking; and yet there werecertain introductory pages that, child as I was, I could not pass quiteas a blank. They were those which treat of the haunts of sea-fowl; of"the solitary rocks and promontories" by them only inhabited; of thecoast of Norway, studded with isles from its southern extremity, theLindeness, or Naze, to the North Cape--

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Jane Eyre + Wuthering Heights (2 Unabridged Classics)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Charlotte Brontë's most beloved novel describes the passionate love between the courageous orphan Jane Eyre and the brilliant, brooding, and domineering Rochester. The loneliness and cruelty of Jane's childhood strengthens her natural independence and spirit, which prove invaluable when she takes a position as a governess at Thornfield Hall. But after she falls in love with her sardonic employer, her discovery of his terrible secret forces her to make a heart-wrenching choice. Ever since its publication in 1847, Jane Eyre has enthralled every kind of reader, from the most critical and cultivated to the youngest and most unabashedly romantic. It lives as one of the great triumphs of storytelling and as a moving and unforgettable portrayal of a woman's quest for self-respect. Born into a poor family and raised by an oppressive aunt, young Jane Eyre becomes the governess at Thornfield Manor to escape the confines of her life. There her fiery independence clashes with the brooding and mysterious nature of her employer, Mr. Rochester. But what begins as outright loathing slowly evolves into a passionate romance. When a terrible secret from Rochester's past threatens to tear the two apart, Jane must make an impossible choice: Should she follow her heart or walk away and lose her love forever? Considered by many to be Charlotte Brontë's masterpiece, Jane Eyre chronicles the passionate love between the independent and strong-willed orphan Jane Eyre and the dark, impassioned Mr. Rochester. Having endured a lonely and cruel childhood, orphan Jane Eyre, who is reared in the home of her heartless aunt prior to attending a boarding school with an equally torturous regime, is strengthened by these experiences.
