Download or read book The Media Effect written by Jim Willis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a postmodern age where the media's depictions of reality serve as stand-ins for the real thing for so many Americans, how much government policy is being made on the basis of those mediated realities and on the public reaction to them? When those mediated depictions deviate from the truth of the actual situation, how serious a situation is that? Time and again, both anecdotal evidence and scientific research seem to confirm that the news media often influence government action. At the least, they speed up policy making that would otherwise take a slower, more reasoned course. Sometimes the media serve as the communication link among world leaders who may be ideological enemies. Because of the enduring popularity of television news, government leaders monitor the networks' story selections and track public opinion trends generated by interviews done in these stories. These then become the substance of proposed legislation and/or executive action, as politicians strive to prove themselves able listeners to the heartland of America and also prove themselves worthy of re-election. This book examines many specific events that show how major news operations either painted a truthful or distorted picture of national and international events, and how governmental leaders responded following those representations.

Book excerpt: The voice of reason in a world that won’t shut up. The Sunday Times Bestseller Winner of the Parliamentary Book Awards Every day, James O’Brien listens to people blaming hard-working immigrants for stealing their jobs while scrounging benefits, and pointing their fingers at the EU and feminists for destroying Britain. But what makes James’s daily LBC show such essential listening – and has made James a standout social media star – is the incisive way he punctures their assumptions and dismantles their arguments live on air, every single morning. In the bestselling How To Be Right, James provides a hilarious and invigorating guide to talking to people with unchallenged opinions. With chapters on every lightning-rod issue, James shows how people have been fooled into thinking the way they do, and in each case outlines the key questions to ask to reveal fallacies, inconsistencies and double standards. Book Synopsis Capitalism Takes Command by : Michael Zakim
Download or read book Capitalism Takes Command written by Michael Zakim and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scholarship on nineteenth-century America’s transformation into a market society has focused on consumption, romanticized visions of workers, and analysis of firms and factories. Building on but moving past these studies, Capitalism Takes Command presents a history of family farming, general incorporation laws, mortgage payments, inheritance practices, office systems, and risk management—an inventory of the means by which capitalism became America’s new revolutionary tradition. This multidisciplinary collection of essays argues not only that capitalism reached far beyond the purview of the economy, but also that the revolution was not confined to the destruction of an agrarian past. As business ceaselessly revised its own practices, a new demographic of private bankers, insurance brokers, investors in securities, and start-up manufacturers, among many others, assumed center stage, displacing older elites and forms of property. Explaining how capital became an “ism” and how business became a political philosophy, Capitalism Takes Command brings the economy back into American social and cultural history.

Book excerpt: The untold story of US Special Forces in Laos, one of the longest secret wars of the Cold War—by a military historian and Special Forces veteran. The Secret War in Laos was one of the first “long wars” fought by US Special Forces, spanning a period of about thirteen years. It was one of the largest CIA-paramilitary operations of the time, kept out of the view of the American public until now. Between 1959 and 1974, Green Berets were covertly deployed to Laos during the Laotian Civil War to prevent the Communist Pathet Lao from taking over the country. Operators disguised as civilians and answering only to “Mister,“ were delivered to the country by Air America, where they reported to the US Ambassador. With limited resources, they faced a country in chaos. Maps had large blank areas. and essential supplies often didn’t arrive at all. In challenging tropical conditions, they trained and undertook combat advisory duties with the Royal Lao Government. Shrouded in secrecy until the 1990s, this was one of the first major applications of special warfare doctrine. Now, the story is comprehensively told for the first time using official archival documents and interviews with veterans.

Book Synopsis So You Want to Be a Scriptwriter and Make a Million Dollars by : Irving Elman
Download or read book So You Want to Be a Scriptwriter and Make a Million Dollars written by Irving Elman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written to fill a need, when I started teaching script writing at Santa Monica College and my students asked me to name a book on the subject I could recommend. After voluminous reading, I could find nothing which was completely satisfactory. Most of it seemed to have been written by people who had never written professionally for films and/or television, and thus had no first-hand knowledge of it from personal experience. The books were written from hearsay and observation, like trying to learn how to swim by standing at the edge of a pool and watching others do it, without ever getting into the water yourself. Or trying to fly by flapping your arms like a bird. It doesn't work. They have no hands-on (or wings-on) concept of how commercially produceable scripts are actually put together, and then marketed; and are of no real practical help to the beginning writer, or anyone else who's interested. Only a swimmer, or a bird, or a writer who has made his living at it, really knows how his special trick is done and can pass it on to others. And so here it is. Enjoy while you learn. Because if writing isn't fun, it's no way to make a living. Rob banks instead (but try not to get caught).
Download or read book First Man written by James R. Hansen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 20, 1969, the world stood still to watch American astronaut Neil A. Armstrong become the first person ever to step on the surface of another heavenly body. Upon his return to Earth, Armstrong was celebrated for his monumental achievement. He was also--as NASA historian Hansen reveals in this authorized biography--misunderstood. Armstrong's accomplishments as an engineer, a test pilot, and an astronaut have long been a matter of record, but Hansen's access to private documents and unpublished sources and his interviews with more than 125 subjects (including more than fifty hours with Armstrong himself) yield the first in-depth analysis of this elusive, reluctant hero.
