James Sidney Rollins, of Missouri, on the Progress of Our Country: Delivered Before the Alumni Association of the Indiana University, at Bloomington, on Tuesday Evening, June 27th, 1871 To me this is an eventful occasion. I come before you under circumstances rarely associated with the life of any man circumstances fraught with personal considerations that gladden the heart, and quicken the understanding. Forty-one years ago, in September next, when but a lad of seventeen years of age, I here graduated; and, favored with the honors of this then infant institution, I took my departure, with my parents, for the far West, to seek a home beyond the Father of Waters. I left Bloomington a boy without experience: I now return to this sacred spot, for the first time since, a man of ripe years, and with more than ordinary experience in public and in private life. Book Synopsis A Union Indivisible by : Michael D. Robinson
Download or read book A Union Indivisible written by Michael D. Robinson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many accounts of the secession crisis overlook the sharp political conflict that took place in the Border South states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri. Michael D. Robinson expands the scope of this crisis to show how the fate of the Border South, and with it the Union, desperately hung in the balance during the fateful months surrounding the clash at Fort Sumter. During this period, Border South politicians revealed the region's deep commitment to slavery, disputed whether or not to leave the Union, and schemed to win enough support to carry the day. Although these border states contained fewer enslaved people than the eleven states that seceded, white border Southerners chose to remain in the Union because they felt the decision best protected their peculiar institution. Robinson reveals anew how the choice for union was fraught with anguish and uncertainty, dividing families and producing years of bitter internecine violence. Letters, diaries, newspapers, and quantitative evidence illuminate how, in the absence of a compromise settlement, proslavery Unionists managed to defeat secession in the Border South.

Book Synopsis The Rivers Ran Backward by : Christopher Phillips
Download or read book The Rivers Ran Backward written by Christopher Phillips and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans imagine the Civil War in terms of clear and defined boundaries of freedom and slavery: a straightforward division between the slave states of Kentucky and Missouri and the free states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kansas. However, residents of these western border states, Abraham Lincoln's home region, had far more ambiguous identities-and contested political loyalties-than we commonly assume. In The Rivers Ran Backward, Christopher Phillips sheds light on the fluid political cultures of the "Middle Border" states during the Civil War era. Far from forming a fixed and static boundary between the North and South, the border states experienced fierce internal conflicts over their political and social loyalties. White supremacy and widespread support for the existence of slavery pervaded the "free" states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, which had much closer economic and cultural ties to the South, while those in Kentucky and Missouri held little identification with the South except over slavery. Debates raged at every level, from the individual to the state, in parlors, churches, schools, and public meeting places, among families, neighbors, and friends. Ultimately, the pervasive violence of the Civil War and the cultural politics that raged in its aftermath proved to be the strongest determining factor in shaping these states' regional identities, leaving an indelible imprint on the way in which Americans think of themselves and others in the nation. The Rivers Ran Backward reveals the complex history of the western border states as they struggled with questions of nationalism, racial politics, secession, neutrality, loyalty, and even place-as the Civil War tore the nation, and themselves, apart. In this major work, Phillips shows that the Civil War was more than a conflict pitting the North against the South, but one within the West that permanently reshaped American regions.

Download or read book The 13Th Amendment Freedom Week Manual written by Kariem Abdul Haqq and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-01-03 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 13th Amendment Freedom Week Manual is a guide to establishing a yearly commemorative week that educates and celebrates the ideals of freedom. It is inclusive, not exclusive. This ‘Freedom Week’ is assembled so that all Americans (blacks, whites, etc.) can benefit from its celebration. It can also include people worldwide, not just Americans, who love freedom everywhere. It is a celebration that helps to heal racial conflict rather than divide. ‘The 13th Amendment Freedom Week’ is not a celebration to simply remember the horrors of slavery. It is a time to remember the ideas and benefits of freedom. This ‘13th Amendment Freedom Week Manual’ lays the foundation for the ‘13th Amendment Freedom Week Movement.’ Together they work to establish the ‘13th Amendment Freedom Week.’
