He saw our modern obsession with individual rights, our occasional financial chaos, our flirtations with war and uneasy peace, our political party-bashing and Supreme Court activism. And as America's preeminent political visionary, he also saw how these problems could be solved. His vision has transcended the centuries and if we will but heed him, take his advice and use it, we can build for ourselves a better America--one that both preserves his legacy and our own freedom.

He foresaw our modern obsession with individual rights, the dangers of judicial activism, the problems of a war presidency, and the economic difficulties that can bring a nation to ruin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In James Madison and the Making of America, historian Kevin Gutzman looks beyond the way James Madison is traditionally seen -- as "The Father of the Constitution" -- to find a more complex and sometimes contradictory portrait of this influential Founding Father and the ways in which he influenced the spirit of today's United States. Instead of an idealized portrait of Madison, Gutzman treats readers to the flesh-and-blood story of a man who often performed his founding deeds in spite of himself: Madison's fame rests on his participation in the writing of The Federalist Papers and his role in drafting the Bill of Rights and Constitution. Today, his contribution to those documents is largely misunderstood. He thought that the Bill of Rights was unnecessary and insisted that it not be included in the Constitution, a document he found entirely inadequate and predicted would soon fail. Madison helped to create the first American political party, the first party to call itself "Republican", but only after he had argued that political parties, in general, were harmful. Madison served as Secretary of State and then as President during the early years of the United States and the War of 1812; however, the American foreign policy he implemented in 1801-1817 ultimately resulted in the British burning down the Capitol and the White House. In so many ways, the contradictions both in Madison's thinking and in the way he governed foreshadowed the conflicted state of our Union now. His greatest legacy—the disestablishment of Virginia's state church and adoption of the libertarian Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom—is often omitted from discussion of his career. Yet, understanding the way in which Madison saw the relationship between the church and state is key to understanding the real man. Kevin Gutzman's James Madison and the Making of America promises to become the standard biography of our fourth President.

Book excerpt: As the "father of the Constitution," James Madison's accomplishments are inseparable from the nation he helped create. From his early days in the state legislature of colonial Virginia to his two terms as president, Madison worked tirelessly alongside - and sometimes in opposition to - his political contemporaries to secure the future of a fledging United States. In this biography, author Jack N. Rakove examines both the life and legacy of this Founding Father, showing how the ideological foundation he helped build still supports our nation today

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Madison was a small man whose quiet voice was often drowned by the hubbub of legislative debate, yet his words - as preserved in his speeches, essays, and letters - resound across the centuries with an authority unmatched by any historical figure of his generation. James Madison's "Advice to My Country" is designed as a ready reference to Madison's thought, including his most perceptive observations on government and human nature. This compendium brings together excerpts from his writings on a variety of political and social issues, ranging from agriculture to free trade, from religion and the state to legislative power, from friendship to fashion, from slavery to unity. Madison is widely cited by politicians, lawyers, and judges because many of the issues he wrote about, such as education, trade, and support for the arts, have contemporary relevance. This selection of short passages will enlighten those pundits who are prone to misquote Madison or enlist him in support of virtually any position in current political debate. With passages cross-referenced to The Papers of James Madison volumes, it will serve as a guide to investigate Madison's views further.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time he became the fourth president of the United States in 1807, James Madison was already a legend. Although he was a short, slight man with a quiet voice, he had played an instrumental role in crafting the US Constitution. As president, he oversaw the country's first international conflict since the American Revolution when tensions with Great Britain led to the War of 1812. He worked to build unity among the states and to preserve many Americans' individual rights—even as larger divisions over slavery and American Indian policy simmered across the country. For a man who was notoriously shy, Madison proved a formidable commander in chief, from his internal policies to his wartime leadership.
