Book excerpt: Excerpt from James Knox Polk, and a History of His Administration: Embracing the Annexation of Texas, the Difficulties With Mexico, the Settlement of the Oregon Question, and Other Important Events The life of any American President, I feel confident, would not need to be specially commended to the attention of his countrymen, - and certainly not that of James K. Polk, - for whatever may be the opinions entertained in regard to the administration of which he was the head, it must be conceded that great and important measures were submitted to their consideration and action, and that interests of the deepest magnitude were confided to their hands. Download or read book Romantic Border Crossings written by Larry Peer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic Border Crossings participates in the important movement towards 'otherness' in Romanticism, by uncovering the intellectual and disciplinary anxieties that surround comparative studies of British, American, and European literature and culture. As this diverse group of essays demonstrates, we can now speak of a global Romanticism that encompasses emerging critical categories such as Romantic pedagogy, transatlantic studies, and transnationalism, with the result that 'new' works by writers marginalized by class, gender, race, or geography are invited into the canon at the same time that fresh readings of traditional texts emerge. Exemplifying these developments, the authors and topics examined include Elizabeth Inchbald, Lord Byron, Gérard de Nerval, English Jacobinism, Goethe, the Gothic, Orientalism, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Anglo-American conflicts, manifest destiny, and teaching romanticism. The collection constitutes a powerful rethinking of the divisions that continue to haunt Romantic studies.

Book Synopsis The Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 by : University of Texas at Arlington. Libraries
Download or read book The Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 written by University of Texas at Arlington. Libraries and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography of the Mexican War holdings of the libraries at the University of Texas at Arlington is the product of more than forty years' collecting and research. As a result of his recognition that Texana collections would be incomplete without items from the period up to the ratification of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo by Mexico in May, 1848, Jenkins Garrett began this bibliography in earnest in the 1950s, at a time when Mexican War items were not even listed as a separate category by collectors. Arranged by chapters according to topics or type of holding, the bibliography is designed to give extensive and accurate descriptive information of approximately 2,500 items of interest to scholars and collectors. Each entry thus includes full title page wording, edition information, collation, other library locations, and notes, though the bibliography is not annotated per se. Extensive appendixes present alternate methods of referencing documents and compilations of data that may prove helpful in studying the Mexican War.
