He is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan not because of patriotic fervor but because he joined the National Guard in the late ‘nineties so that the taxpayers could put him through college. Nine-eleven took him by surprise – “sort of like Bush,” as Jay puts it. His job at Trans/Oxana is to prevent losses that Trans/Oxana has insured against – especially losses that unpleasant people want to happen. After Hollywood pretty boy Kent Trowbridge plays late-night bumper-car in his Ferrari with two palm trees and a median in New Paradigm Studios, which bought an eight-figure Trans/Oxana policy insuring performance of Trowbridge’s Major Performing Artist Contract. In San Gabriel, unlike LA County, second offence DUI is not “boys will be boys.” Jay quickly realizes that Trowbrigde is going to do some county time. Because there won’t be any director yelling “CUT!” when things get dicey on the inside, Jay figures that Trowbridge won’t be in shape to perform anything once he gets out unless Jay finds him a Jail Coach. Enter Katrina Thomspon whose past includes jail, the Marines, a daughter, and a hustler named Stan Chaladian. The first will help Jay, the second will impress him, the third will charm him, and the fourth with almost kill him – that’s life in the Loss Prevention business.

Book excerpt: Jai l Time, What you need to know... ...Before you go to federal pr i son Jail Time was a book I never wanted to write. Federal Prison was a place I never wanted to be. Sometimes things just happen that you really can't explain or even know why they happened. They just do. Life is funny that way- one day you are on top of the world and the next day you're in a bottomless pit-you think. But later you discover that the pit's bottom is even deeper. There are many challenges facing those individuals entering federal prison. These challenges are not easy, but they are controllable. Controllable, if you have the proper knowledge, resources, and motivation. The motivation is to get home to your family as soon as possible. This is where Jail Time can help. Jail Time offers solutions to the problems that men and women facing federal incarceration are confronted with. Jail Time provides a wealth of information to help families get through their ordeal together and get the offender back home in the shortest possible amount of time. Born into an impoverished and broken family in Ohio, Michael Frantz studied diligently and graduated with honors from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He continued his studies and earned a post graduate degree from Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy with highest honors. With little or no money he started his own home medical equipment business in 1980 and grew it in sales to over $7,000,000 a year. At the height of his business he had six locations in five different Ohio cities. In October of 2002 the FBI raided all six of his stores in what was to become a two year legal and emotional nightmare. They alleged Medicare and tax fraud. In 2004 Mr. Frantz reluctantly accepted a plea agreement and was eventually sentenced in July of 2005 to 51 months in the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) in Miami, Florida. He spent nearly 16 months there. Later he was transferred to the adjacent low security Federal Correctional Institution (FCI). In 2008, he won his appeal and was released from federal prison on July 18, 2008 after serving nearly 36 months in federal confinement. This, as he likes to say, was a life and career changing experience.

Book excerpt: Go to Jail! is a call for Christians worldwide to take the mission of Christ outside the walls of the church. "Dr. Bezanson provides a good model and keen insight into how a local church and its people can make a huge impact in the jail found near its own back yard. He brings out a sense of the amazing reality that occurs in God's kingdom as the battle rages for "guilty" and incarcerated people's souls and in the process some end up belonging to God." (Chaplain James Holder, AZ prison complex, Perryville) "...A life-changing and lifesaving story of caring people, who bravely follow their faith as they share God's word with those who have been forgotten. Thanks be to God for the servant hearts of Pastor Bezanson and the Amazing Grace Jail Pastors." (A grateful Mother of a former inmate) Rick Bezanson is the senior pastor of Amazing Grace Christian Church in Glendale, Arizona. During his tenure over six years the church has grown from worship attendance of 23 to over 170. He also implemented the planting of 5 jail churches in the Maricopa County jail complex and the commencement of Spanish worship at Amazing Grace. Rick recently received his Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. His passion is for the outcast and disenfranchised. Go to Jail! is the culmination of many talks and training classes for pastors and laity interested in jail or prison ministry. He has found that prisoners are longing for transformation and are desperately in need of the words of Jesus. Remember, Jesus will equip the called. If you are considering this ministry, Jesus will bless you and equip you. Amazingly, you will be changed also as you bring Jesus' words to prisoners.

Book excerpt: If you are on the verge of breaking the law or heading to prison for the first time, the ten unwritten prison rules (commandments) outlined in this book can possibly save your life. Please, abandon the belief that you will can lead a fulfilling life breaking the law. More important, please do not believe that because you are wealthier, smarter, physically stronger or more privileged you can automatically survive in prison. This publication covers a lot of ground, but it will not cover every scenario you may face in prison. Why? Simply put, the environment inside jails and prisons vary according to their security levels. The culture of the inmates who have an influence in these facilities and the staff members who run them will also differ. But once you get a grasp for the basic rules by which prison culture operates, you should be able to adapt these commandments as needed. The rules in this book address the primary causes of violence in the inmate subculture resulting from a process called "Institutionalization." Institutionalization occurs when one adapts to and depends on the laws or unwritten rules within a structured or well-established system. Life in prison often causes inmates to consciously or unconsciously relinquish their independence and responsibility. If you are not conscious of offending others while adjusting to the often cold, unbending prison routine that deprives you of privacy and freedom, you can easily succumb to violence. This can be avoided if you know some basic principles that apply regardless of the setting or culture.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989, Jail Journeys was a contemporary history of the English prison system in the words of those who had endured it as prisoners or who had worked within it. More than 1000 extracts from more than 150 first-hand accounts of life ‘inside’ chronicle the empty routines of the prison day and tell of the loneliness, the despair, the squalor, the fights, the friendships, the sex, the humour. There are also eye-witness accounts of the Dartmoor Mutiny, of hangings and floggings, of escapes, and personal statements by the well-known – James Phelan, Wilfred Macartney, Albert Pierrepoint, Charles Kray, John McVicar, Jimmy Boyle, Alfie Hinds, Lord Alfred Douglas – and by many others less well known. These testimonies, by turn dramatic, literate and naïve, add up to an implicit sociology of the twentieth-century English prison, depicting a divided social structure with ‘screws’ on one side and ‘cons’ on the other. The book is aimed at anyone with an interest in social issues and twentieth-century history as well as students of law, history, sociology, criminology, and social administration, and at professionals working in all these fields.

Book excerpt: In one series, the original writings of the universally acknowledged teachers of the Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Jewish, and Islamic traditions have been critically selected, translated, and introduced by internationally recognized scholars and spiritual leaders. Miguel de Molinos (c. 1628-1696) was one of the most important figures in the religious controversy known as Quietism. Spanish by birth, he spent nearly his entire adult life in Rome, where he attracted wide fame as a spiritual director and gained the favor of several prominent figures. His Spiritual Guide (1675) recommended a life of spiritual simplicity and promoted what became known as the prayer of quiet. On publication it was an immediate bestseller, but the Guide's fame came to an abrupt end in 1685 when Molinos was accused of heresy and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in prison in 1696. This Classics of Western Spirituality edition of the Spiritual Guide was translated from the new critical edition of José Ignacio Tellechea Idígoras. It provides an unabridged translation in modern English along with a historical introduction by the translator and a theological introduction by the eminent scholar Bernard McGinn. Book jacket.

It's also the only way he knows how to survive—besides picking pockets, dodging the law, and using every ounce of his plucky charm. But none of this will be enough to save him now. If only he'd never snooped around a dead man's house. If only he'd never found that pocket watch full of strange magic. If only he'd known the old man had snuffed it at the hands of the ghostly Spektors, or that such dark spirits even existed, because now they're after him. When Ink is approached by an enigmatic group offering to keep him safe, he accepts—only to discover his rescuers are a band of infamous fugitives. Who knew they had a flair for winemaking? Or a penchant for sing-a-longs? Thrust into a world of arcane horrors, powerful politicians, and dangers on every side, the boy has no choice but to finally break his rule and decide who to trust. But with all the secrets, magic, and mystery thickening around him—and the stakes so much higher than he ever imagined—it might just be downright impossible.

Book excerpt: Seoul Ambition is the remarkable story of how the nation of South Korea—despite its infamous obsession with academics—focuses feverishly on sports in ways much different than what we’re used to in the West. South Korean athletes dominate leaderboards in international golf events and have won the most Olympic medals of all-time in archery and short track speed skating. The country has produced transcendent talents in figure skating and the budding arena of esports, creating a seemingly never-ending pipeline of children who want to emulate their success. Yet, the talent development process in Korea presents an interesting conundrum. Though all young athletes pour in hours of practice, Korean athletes traditionally only become world class in a select few niche sports. One victory from a 20-year-old golfer caused one of the greatest talent rushes in modern sports, but a captivating World Cup run in men’s soccer did not. In fact, Son Heung-min, the most dynamic Korean soccer player of all time, actually had to rebel against the system to become a creative genius. What is happening behind the scenes? After spending years as a coach and physical education teacher in Seoul, author Joel Cressman set out to answer that question. Seoul Ambition explores the amazing stories of: • A young baseball prodigy who taught himself how to throw left-handed to become one of the most accurate Major League pitchers of all time • How South Korea intentionally used East Germany as a model to win more medals and the ideological battle over North Korea • An educational system that pushes athletes to focus full-time on their sports while ignoring academics to get into top universities • Why the Korean Basketball League banned tall players to help save the sport • The story and the surprising neuroscience behind how Korea became the global hotbed of professional video gaming • The misconceptions of “Tiger Parenting” and how a hands-on parenting style is viewed differently by East Asian children than Western kids • Why the country’s best speed skater was forced to defect to Russia • How the national men’s and women’s hockey teams willed themselves from obscurity to compete with the world’s best at the 2018 Olympics Full of extraordinary stories of athletes and their dedicated parents, the book explores the science and history behind one of the most interesting sports cultures in the world. Seoul Ambition will change the way you think about talent and creativity, the power of community and national identity, and the fascinating process of creating world-class athletes.
