Book Synopsis Jahrbuch für Europäische Ethnologie by : Heidrun Alzheimer
Download or read book Jahrbuch für Europäische Ethnologie written by Heidrun Alzheimer and published by Jahrbuch für Europäische Ethnologie. This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Colonial Fantasies by : Susanne Zantop
Download or read book Colonial Fantasies written by Susanne Zantop and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1997-09-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Germany became a colonial power relatively late, postcolonial theorists and histories of colonialism have thus far paid little attention to it. Uncovering Germany’s colonial legacy and imagination, Susanne Zantop reveals the significance of colonial fantasies—a kind of colonialism without colonies—in the formation of German national identity. Through readings of historical, anthropological, literary, and popular texts, Zantop explores imaginary colonial encounters of "Germans" with "natives" in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century literature, and shows how these colonial fantasies acted as a rehearsal for actual colonial ventures in Africa, South America, and the Pacific. From as early as the sixteenth century, Germans preoccupied themselves with an imaginary drive for colonial conquest and possession that eventually grew into a collective obsession. Zantop illustrates the gendered character of Germany’s colonial imagination through critical readings of popular novels, plays, and travel literature that imagine sexual conquest and surrender in colonial territory—or love and blissful domestic relations between colonizer and colonized. She looks at scientific articles, philosophical essays, and political pamphlets that helped create a racist colonial discourse and demonstrates that from its earliest manifestations, the German colonial imagination contained ideas about a specifically German national identity, different from, if not superior to, most others.
Book Synopsis Media and Minorities by : Georg Ruhrmann
Download or read book Media and Minorities written by Georg Ruhrmann and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary volume »Media and Minorities«, that is the outcome of a conference hosted by the Academy of the Jewish Museum Berlin in cooperation with the Council on Migration, presents, from an international perspective, the latest results of empirical studies and discusses them, led by the following key questions: how has the media presentation of ethnic and religious minorities developed in Germany and in other immigration countries, such as the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom? Does a higher proportion of members of minority communities working in media production automatically lead to a more balanced approach to these topics? And lastly: which strategies are necessary to ensure differentiated reporting in pluralist societies and also to promote ethnic and religious diversity in media structures? Likewise, changing requirements placed on an appropriate sensitivity to language also form part of the range of issues which are being considered.

Book Synopsis Western and Eastern Perspectives on Religion and Religiosity by : Sarah Demmrich
Download or read book Western and Eastern Perspectives on Religion and Religiosity written by Sarah Demmrich and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of religiosity is a highly individual aspect of religion. The understanding of it was shaped in Protestant circles in the Western context and it has inspired a huge body of research and further developments in theology, as well as in religious education. However, both charismatic movements within Christianity and orthopractic religious traditions such as Islam raise the question of whether an individualized account of religiosity is able to grasp the spectrum of lived religion comprehensively. Furthermore, with increasing globalization, even Asian worldviews like Hinduism or Buddhism are part of daily experience and have expanded the notion of what can be perceived of as religion. These changes were discussed at the international conference ‘Religiosity in East and West: Conceptual and Methodological Challenges’ at the University of Münster, Germany, from 25 to 27 June 2019. With this volume of conference proceedings we pay special attention to the most significant conference contributions relevant to religious education and practical theology.

Book Synopsis Religion and Modernity by : Detlef Pollack
Download or read book Religion and Modernity written by Detlef Pollack and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a book that provides a new integrated theory of religious change in modern societies, but rather one that develops theoretical elements that contribute to the understanding of some contemporary religious developments. Most of the approaches in sociology of religion are prone to emphasize either processes of religious decline or of religious upswing. For example, secularization theory usually includes a couple of relevant factors--such as functional differentiation, economic affluence or social equality--in order to account for religious change. However, the result of such a theory's empirical analyses seems to be certain in advance, namely that the social relevance of religion is decreasing. In contrast, the religious market model devised by sociologists of religion in the US is inclined to detect everywhere processes of religious upsurge. Religion and Modernity: An International Comparison avoids a purely theoretically based perspective on religious changes. For this reason, Detlef Pollack and Gergely Rosta do not begin with theoretical propositions but with questions. The authors raise the question of how the social significance of religion in its various facets has changed in modern societies, and explain what factors and conditions have contributed to these changes.

It includes more non-infectious disease issues and climate change discussion alongside revised case studies and expanded methodology chapters to draw out implications for practice. Promoting an action-based, solutions-oriented approach, One Health: The Theory and Practice of Integrated Health Approaches highlights the lessons learned for both human and animal health professionals and students.
