Book excerpt: In The Eclipse of Liberal Protestantism in the Netherlands, Tom-Eric Krijger is the first to offer a synthesis of the development of the Protestant modernist movement in Dutch religious, social, cultural, and political life between 1870 and 1940. In historiography, the liberal Protestant community is said to have lost appeal and influence in these decades due to a lack of theological clarity, inner harmony, and organisation. Analysing liberal Protestants’ self-perception vis-à-vis Christian orthodoxy, self-understanding as a faith community, attitude towards other alternatives to orthodoxy, class-consciousness, literary criticism, political commitment, and involvement with foreign mission, Krijger challenges this view. Making an international comparison, he argues that the Dutch modernist movement failed to make headway primarily due to liberal Protestant expectations and discourse.

Book excerpt: The book "Footsteps of Fate" (also referred to as "Eline Vere") changed into written with the aid of the famous Dutch creator Louis Couperus in the late 1800s and early 1900s. People consider the book as a masterpiece of naturalism and a conventional of Dutch writing. The tale is about Eline Vere, the identify person, who's a young, touchy lady from The Hague's top elegance. Eline struggles with what society expects of her, her love relationships, and her very own internal turmoil. Eline's psychological adventure will become a shifting take a look at the human situation as she deals with the complicated relationships in her existence and the stifling norms of her time. Couperus shows Eline's internal life with ardour and sensitivity by way of understanding loads about human psychology and social norms. The book is a mirrored image of the naturalist movement because it suggests how genetic and environmental factors have an effect on the lives of the characters. "Footsteps of Fate" is well-known for its brilliant writing, deep characters, and practical portrayal of the social pressures that people inside the Dutch bourgeoisie in the late 1800s had to cope with. People nevertheless like Louis Couperus's work because it explores human nature in a way that never goes out of favor and because it has a place in the literary canon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving beyond the postcolonial literature field’s traditional focus on the novel, this book shines a light on the "minor" genres in which postcolonial issues are also explored. The contributors examine the intersection of generic issues with postcolonial realities in regions such as South Africa, Nigeria, New Zealand, Indonesia, Australia, the United Kingdon, and the Caribbean. These "minor" genres include crime fiction, letter writing, radio plays, poetry, the novel in verse and short stories, as well as blogs and essays. The volume closes with Robert Antoni’s discussion of his use of the vernacular and digital resources in As Flies to Whatless Boys (2013), and suggests that "major" genres might yield new webs of meaning when digital media are mobilized with a view to creating new forms of hybridity and multiplicity that push genre boundaries. In focusing on underrepresented and understudied genres, this book pays justice to the multiplicity of the field of postcolonial studies and gives voice to certain literary traditions within which the novel occupies a less central position. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Postcolonial Writing.
