Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982. The Poetics of Jacobean Drama argues for a rediscovered approach to the study of Renaissance drama. Coburn Freer observes that most modern criticism of this drama treats the plays as if they were written in prose, thus overlooking whole areas of dramatic meaning that were understood in the past. Such an understanding, he asserts, was common among writers, actors, audiences, and readers of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, and a knowledge of it is essential to a full appreciation of the characterization and dramatic structures in these plays. Freer explores the evolution of the modern reluctance to approach Renaissance drama as one would dramatic poetry—from the standpoint of a listener. Blank verse, the author shows, provided Jacobean dramatists with a poetic form against which they could work the pressures of experience within their characters. The writers' ability to work with and against this form provided infinite resources for delineating character and creating significant coherences in the structure of a play. The Poetics of Jacobean Drama offers insights into what the Renaissance writer, actor, and playgoer would have regarded as the domain of poetry in drama. Topics discussed include the conditions of stage performance and the style of acting, Elizabethan education, the rise of printed texts and collected editions, and the comments of Elizabethan audiences and readers. Freer's commentary and theoretical explanations suggest both why and how we should pay closer attention to the poetry of Renaissance drama.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donne and the Politics of Conscience in Early Modern England examines the responses of John Donne and his contemporaries to post-Reformation debate about authority and interpretation. It argues that the legal and epistemological principles, as well as the narrative practices, of casuistry provided an important resource for those caught in the welter of conflicting laws and religions. The first two chapters explore the political, historical, and theological contexts of casuistry, locating Donne in debates about the limits of reason and the relativity of law and ethics. Chapter three addresses Donne's concern with problems of moral decision and action, of knowledge and definition, in five of his prose works. Chapter four examines ways in which his verse assimilates and wittily subverts casuists' responses to epistemological and linguistic uncertainty. The study is particularly useful for literary critics, intellectual historians, and theologians.

Book excerpt: One Of The Pioneering Works In Literary Historiography, The Book A Short History Of English Literature Combines In A Remarkable Manner The Historical And The Critical Principles That Ought To Govern Any Literary History. On Saintbury S Own Testimony The Book Is Not Meant To Be Bird S Eye Views . It Is, In Fact, A Fine Critical Survey Of The Entire History Of English Literature From Its Beginning To The End Of The Victorian Period.Saintsbury S Copious Scholarship, Fine Clarity Of Thought And Literary Sensibility Have Made The Approach To Each Text Both Microscopic And Telescopic So That While A Text Is Kept Under A Sharp Critical Focus, All The Relevant Contextual Aspects Are Touched Upon To Further Illuminate It. Despite Saintsbury S Englishness, The Book, As A Short But Succinct Account Of The History Of Literature, Is Of Perennial Value. While Any Student Of English Literature Will Find The Book Immensely Useful, Anybody Interested In English Literature Will Find It Eminently Readable And Interesting.
