Book excerpt: In the lead up to the Civil War, Joseph Alfred "Jack" Slade kept the stagecoaches and the U.S. Mail running through Colorado, and helped launch the Pony Express, all of which kept California and its gold in the Union. With his reputation as a gunfighter, across the Great Plains he became known as "The Law West of Kearny." Since Slade's death in 1864, persistent myths and stories have defied the efforts of writers and historians, including Mark Twain, to capture the real Jack Slade. Despite his notoriety, the pieces of Slade's fascinating life—including his marriage to the beautiful Maria Virginia—have remained scattered and hidden. In Death of a Gunfighter: The Quest for Jack Slade, the West's Most Elusive Legend, journalist Dan Rottenberg assembles years of research to reveal the true story of Jack Slade, one of America's greatest tragic heroes.

Book Synopsis The Bad Old Days of Montana by : Randi Samuelson-Brown
Download or read book The Bad Old Days of Montana written by Randi Samuelson-Brown and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bad Old Days of Montana celebrates the state’s glorious and rowdy past. Many people born and bred here relish just how “bad” things used to be: the terrain, the inhabitants and especially the quality of whiskey. It almost goes without saying that Montana had all the characteristic wild west elements — and in abundance! The chapters focus on the infamous and notorious rather than the law-abiding and civic-minded settlers. These pages, like the state, recount the tales of people who came west seeking if not their fortune, at least opportunity. It is no secret that Montana was settled by the adventurous willing to brave the harsh conditions and to prevail. Whether on the right or the wrong side of the law, all settlers and pioneers made unique contributions to the state’s complex culture. Certainly, in the nineteenth century, Montana was not for the faint of heart. Beginning with the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 as the origins of the mountain men, the book will offer a variety of strange tales, ranging from vigilanteeism to the heyday of the Copper Kings. Many such tales were influenced by too much whiskey and greed. This book is an account of the misfits, outlaws and rugged individuals who cast their mark on this most remarkable state. Populated by the native tribes before “discovery” by Lewis and Clark at the headwaters of the Missouri River, the land that would become known as Montana was traversed by mountain men, mined by gold and mineral seekers and ranched and harvested by the homesteaders. Throughout these varied waves of discovery and settlement, this book explores the less-than-savory dealings, the early attempts at law and order (which often failed or had questionable results), and the myriad of colorful characters and events that made Montana what it is today.

Book Synopsis Barney Barnfather by : Angus Mansfield
Download or read book Barney Barnfather written by Angus Mansfield and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riversdale Robert 'Barney' Barnfather was an RAF fighter pilot who flew Spitfires in action almost continuously from November 1941 until the end of the war in Europe. Barney was often in the thick of the fighting and saw action in the offensive sweeps over France, in the desperate air battle for Malta, the fighting in North Africa, the invasions of Sicily and Italy, and finally on the fringes of the Third Reich over Austria in 1945. This type of experienced and brave pilot formed the backbone of Fighter Command and after many operational flying hours, clashes with enemy aircraft and even a mid-air collision, he survived it all relatively unscathed. Thanks to the fascinating personal log book that Barney kept of his experiences, the contributions from his former colleagues and extensive historical research, Angus Mansfield has produced a detailed and enthralling history of a Spitfire pilot's escapades thousands of feet above the battlefields of the Second World War.

Book Synopsis On the Pony Express Trail by : Scott Alumbaugh
Download or read book On the Pony Express Trail written by Scott Alumbaugh and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pony Express has a hold on the American imagination wildly out of proportion to its actual role in the history of the West. The system of transporting mail to California by a relay of lone riders on swift horses ran less than eighteen months in 1860-1861 and failed by every measure of success. Nevertheless, it has become the most iconic symbol of the West. Scott Alumbaugh was so taken with the Pony Express that at age 62 he bikepacked 1,400 miles of the trail from St. Joseph, Missouri to Salt Lake City, Utah. Alumbaugh’s journey took five weeks on a route that was mostly off-road, sometimes through remote territory. Along the way he came to see the celebrated Pony Express as a collection of fables based on a few historical facts and reshaped into a symbol of the spirit that “won the West.” On The Pony Express Trail: One Man’s Bikepacking Journey to Discover History from a Different Kind of Saddle recounts Scott Alumbaugh’s experience bikepacking the Pony Express Trail during the summer of 2021. The narrative follows his day-to-day experiences and impressions—the challenges, the sites he visited, the country he rode through, and the interactions with the people he met—while taking a fresh look at the real Pony Express in the context of mid-1800s historical events along the trail: The Mexican-American, Utah, and Paiute Wars; the California and Pike’s Peak gold rushes; the overland emigration of hundreds of thousands to Oregon and California; the exodus of tens of thousands of Mormons to Utah; and the increasingly contentious fight over slavery along with the looming threat of civil war.

When he loses his wife tragically almost twenty years later, he is left with four kids, a failing farm and seemingly no way to get his life back together. That all changes when an action packed week suddenly gives him the opportunity to move west with his kids and start afresh. His family comes together in their adventure to build a new life, befriending the local townspeople and Indians alike in the process. Hammeker might even be ready to find a new love interest. But just when things seem to be headed the right direction, an ornery outlaw by the name of Jack Slade threatens to take away all that Mack has worked to regain. An entertaining mix of history and imagination, Mack Hammeker: Colorado Bound is the tale of a fictional family’s migration westward in the 1860s along the Overland Trail to where Fort Collins stands today. The story is interlaced with real historic places, events and fictionalized versions of real characters from northern Colorado such as Jack Slade, Auntie Stone, Ben Holladay and Antoine Janis.

Download or read book Hang 'Em High written by Bob Herzberg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century the Western film has proven to be an enduring genre. At the dawn of the 20th century, in the same years that The Great Train Robbery begat a film genre, Owen Wister wrote The Virginian, which began a new literary genre. From the beginning, both literature and film would usually perpetuate the myth of the Old West as a place where justice always triumphed and all concerned (except the villains) pursued the Law. The facts, however, reflect abuses of due process: lynch mobs and hired gunslingers rather than lawmen regularly pursued lawbreakers; vengeance rather than justice was often employed; and even in courts of law justice didn't always prevail. Some films and novels bucked this trend, however. This book discusses the many Western films as well as the novels they are based on, that illustrate distortions of the law in the Old West and the many ways, most of them marked by vengeance, in which its characters pursued justice.
