Book Synopsis Another Great Day at Sea by : Geoff Dyer
Download or read book Another Great Day at Sea written by Geoff Dyer and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a writer “whose genre-jumping refusal to be pinned down [makes him] an exemplar of our era” (NPR), a new book that confirms his power to astound readers. As a child Geoff Dyer spent long hours making and blotchily painting model fighter planes. So the adult Dyer jumped at the chance of a residency aboard an aircraft carrier. Another Great Day at Sea chronicles Dyer’s experiences on the USS George H.W. Bush as he navigates the routines and protocols of “carrier-world,” from the elaborate choreography of the flight deck through miles of walkways and hatches to kitchens serving meals for a crew of five thousand to the deafening complexity of catapult and arresting gear. Meeting the Captain, the F-18 pilots and the dentists, experiencing everything from a man-overboard alert to the Steel Beach Party, Dyer guides us through the most AIE (acronym intensive environment) imaginable. A lanky Englishman (could he really be both the tallest and the oldest person on the ship?) in a deeply American world, with its constant exhortations to improve, to do better, Dyer brilliantly records the daily life on board the ship, revealing it to be a prism for understanding a society where discipline and conformity, dedication and optimism, become forms of self-expression. In the process it becomes clear why Geoff Dyer has been widely praised as one of the most original—and funniest—voices in literature. Another Great Day at Sea is the definitive work of an author whose books defy definition.

Download or read book Adak written by Andrew C A Jampoler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of great tales of men against the sea, Adak offers a compelling look at courage and commitment in the face of certain tragedy. Alfa Foxtrot 586 was a P-3 Orion on station on a sensitive Cold War mission off the Kamchatka Peninsula on 26 October 1978. When a propeller malfunction turned into an engine fire, the pilot was forced to ditch his turboprop into the empty, mountainous seas west of the Aleutian Islands. The aircraft went down in just ninety seconds, taking one of the three rafts with it. Thirteen men launched the other rafts, the smallest of which—terribly overcrowded—soon began to leak, threatening the nine men aboard. This account of the flight crew's desperate battle against the sea, and the heroic efforts to rescue them provide an engrossing true story of survival.

This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in Sea Bright, New Jersey, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Gregory Martinez became engrossed with living by the sea. One day, he received a very distinguished letter addressed to him from the President of the United States. The Selective Service Department of the United States, had directed him to serve in the Armed Forces and report for active duty on July 14, 1970. Seeking guidance from his father, he was told "Go join the Navy. Do what you have to; get something positive out of the experience. Learn all you can." This became Greg's first mission. On April 16, 1971, Greg reported aboard the 4.4 acre aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CVA-64). By September 1971, the ship and her crew, including the air wing, were combat-ready for deployment. Interspersed with combat duties, Greg experienced riveting life adventures both onboard and ashore during his years with Connie. After his Honorable Discharge, Greg began to feel the "calling" of his ship. Unsure what to make of these feelings, he slowly permitted himself to be drawn in by her. It eventually became clear that Greg needed to learn more about Connie and what was occurring during her tenure at sea. Connie-a ship that cannot and will not be forgotten-had a profound and lasting effect on Greg and others who have sailed aboard her. Greg's final mission and its results are revealed in the concluding chapters of the book; a mission which no one, not even Greg himself, could have ever predicted.

Book excerpt: All he wanted was to fly. A teenage pilot with an itchy throttle hand, a DaVinci-esque knack for sketching, and four generations of aeronautical heritage can't wait to manifest his passionate aversion to the ground. He sees every hard earned dollar as a tick on the Hobbs meter. Every unencumbered swath of dirt is a potential landing strip, legal or not. His head literally in the clouds over airplanes and girls, the young Aviator can't take a hint. Oblivious to the opportunities and history right under his nose, his jaunts over the Cascade Mountains of Washington State to fly 1940s era taildraggers at Evergreen Field land him in the company of local aviation legend, Wally Olson. Three decades later, the reminiscent Aviator gets 20/20 vision from Dr. Hindsight. This book is packed with adventures and illustrations that provide a uniquely personal account.
