Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivanhoe is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, first published in late 1819 in three volumes and subtitled A Romance. At the time it was written it represented a shift by Scott away from fairly realistic novels set in Scotland in the comparatively recent past, to a somewhat fanciful depiction of medieval England. It has proved to be one of the best known and most influential of Scott's novels.Ivanhoe is set in 12th-century England with colourful descriptions of a tournament, outlaws, a witch trial and divisions between Jews and Christians. It has been credited for increasing interest in romance and medievalism; John Henry Newman claimed Scott "had first turned men's minds in the direction of the Middle Ages", while Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin made similar assertions of Scott's overwhelming influence over the revival, based primarily on the publication of this novel. It has also had an important influence on popular perceptions of Richard the Lionheart, King John and Robin Hood.

Book excerpt: The Time Wars series is being reissued for the first time in a new, larger, higher quality edition to address reader concerns about prior editions, as well as numerous requests to have the books available on Kindle. In the 27th Century, international disputes are resolved through time travel, "clocking" soldiers from the future into conflicts of the past. It seemed like an elegant idea: wartime industries drove the economy without actually putting nations through the physical ravages of war. And since the past already happened, history could not be changed. So went the theory. What could possibly go wrong? Lucas Priest found out the hard way. Enlisting in the U.S. Army Temporal Corps seemed like an adventure compared to his boring corporate job, but after marching with the Roman legions against Hannibal, fighting Custer's 7th Cavalry with Crazy Horse, and raiding with Attila's savage Huns, he could have used a little boredom. And it was about to get much worse. History, it turned out, could be changed, and a plot to kidnap and impersonate King Richard the Lion-hearted was discovered barely in the nick of time. But could it be stopped before a madman changed the course of history? Two elite commando teams had tried and failed in their attempts. Now Priest was drafted to take part in a third. The team was tasked to infiltrate the past with impersonations of their own to prevent a timestream split. But it would be hard enough passing themselves off as Sir Ivanhoe, Robin Hood, and Little John without having to assassinate a king....

Book excerpt: Having had many unexplainable brushes with possible tragic results, Ivanhoe's autobiographical journey questions the veracity of fate versus guardian help from the other side. Too many unexplained circumstances impose a belief that our lives are not simple occurrences of happenstance, but rather a supervised experience under the umbrella of a contract made with ourselves prior to our birth. As a young boy his relationship with God was one of innocent, childlike curiosity about where God lived and what he did for people through a Catholic healer named Brother Andre. His relatively religious childhood perpetuated an interest in spirituality, but his faith in secular religion faded into vacillating between atheism and agnostic until he witnessed the painful death of his mother. This is when the "knowing" aspect that she didn't die conflicted with his pragmatic methods of an engineering environment. Recounting three out-of-body experiences and an unexplainable circumstance that allowed him to look into a future event, his engineer thinking was that this is personal and tangible evidence that there's something else going on other than just physical embodiment. Not accepting that Mom was nowhere, he begins an exhaustive search into veridical near death experiences. These are near death experiences that were verifiable through others that did not have the experience. In this sense, stories of tunnels, angels, dead relatives and so on were ignored over doctor's, paramedic's and other people's accounts that the "dead" person was able to see and hear when they were clinically dead. Special attention was given to things they witnessed in places other than where the bodies of the dead were at the time. Ivanhoe makes the argument that God must exist by referencing physicists and others in the scientific community that are conceding to facts that support an intelligent energy for both the existence of the universe and that of intelligent coding within DNA. Also explained are new theories that the brain is not the seat of consciousness, but that the mind can be present and conscious outside the brain. This is supported with studies being conducted by physicians documenting cases of consciousness outside the body. A postulate is made of how probabilities in a state where time has no meaning allows one to foresee future events and how those collapse into physical choices. These probabilities that in turn allow for choice are explained by way of the laws of quantum physics. This idea provides a plausible real world answer to the dichotomy that God knows all, however, only one path is ultimately chosen by way of free will. The culmination of his search is a solace for anyone that has lost a loved one.

Book excerpt: “A lighthearted, clever send-up of zany horror conventions, this book is just the thing for kids about ready for M. T. Anderson’s Whales on Stilts.” —Booklist When Joules and Kevin Rockman’s parents drop them off at Camp Whatsitooya on their way to an International Spamathon, the twins expect a summer of marshmallows, campfires, and canoe trips. What they do not expect is to defend the earth from an invasion of sugar-addicted, murderous, seven-foot-tall rabbits from another galaxy. Happily, the Rockman twins, veteran watchers of the Late, Late, Late Creepy Show for Insomniacs, are unusually well-prepared for dealing with monstrous beings from outer space. If only their fellow campers were so lucky. Andrea Beaty, New York Times–bestselling author of several very funny picture books and a mystery novel, here reaches new heights of hilarity and verbal dexterity in a novel sure to become a camp—ba-dum-dum—classic. “Beaty’s tale of high silliness is sure to please, and it’s dotted with Santat’s mini-comics and spot illustrations, which move the story along.” —Kirkus Reviews “Beaty’s storytelling is lighthearted and fast-paced . . . her unconventional and entertaining narrative make it a wholly fun read.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that the self is inextricably intertwined with the rest of the world—the “oneness hypothesis”—can be found in many of the world’s philosophical and religious traditions. Oneness provides ways to imagine and achieve a more expansive conception of the self as fundamentally connected with other people, creatures, and things. Such views present profound challenges to Western hyperindividualism and its excessive concern with self-interest and tendency toward self-centered behavior. This anthology presents a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary exploration of the nature and implications of the oneness hypothesis. While fundamentally inspired by East and South Asian traditions, in which such a view is often critical to their philosophical approach, this collection also draws upon religious studies, psychology, and Western philosophy, as well as sociology, evolutionary theory, and cognitive neuroscience. Contributors trace the oneness hypothesis through the works of East Asian and Western schools, including Confucianism, Mohism, Daoism, Buddhism, and Platonism and such thinkers as Zhuangzi, Kant, James, and Dewey. They intervene in debates over ethics, cultural difference, identity, group solidarity, and the positive and negative implications of metaphors of organic unity. Challenging dominant views that presume that the proper scope of the mind stops at the boundaries of skin and skull, The Oneness Hypothesis shows that a more relational conception of the self is not only consistent with contemporary science but has the potential to lead to greater happiness and well-being for both individuals and the larger wholes of which they are parts.

Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
