Book excerpt: Mental Wealth reveals an approach to workplace mental health and wellbeing that is proven to actually get results. Despite having a huge impact on the productivity, profitability, and culture of organizations, there is very little guidance currently provided to managers and leaders on how to effectively manage workplace mental health and wellbeing. What does exist is often focused on the legal aspects of minimizing risk that it misses the psychology of workplace mental health and high performance and actually ends up creating risk for workplaces. Mental Wealth is a guide for managers and leaders on how to manage employees who may be experiencing mental health issues in the workplace. Founders of the Workplace Mental Health Institute, Peter Diaz and Emi Golding, provide an essential foundation for addressing workplace mental health. Some of the essential foundations discussed include dispelling myths about workplace mental health, the factors that cause and contribute to mental health issues, the impact those factors are having on workplaces, the benefits of addressing mental health appropriately, and 7 Pillars for a mentally Wealthy Workplace. Mental Wealth also includes case studies and practical strategies that can be implemented for immediate results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the half-decade since publication of the first edition, there have been significant changes in society brought about by the exploding rise of technology in everyday lives that also have an impact on our mental health. The most important of these has been the shift in the way human interaction itself is conducted, especially with electronic text-based exchanges. This expanded second edition is an extensive body of work. It contains 39 chapters on different aspects of technological innovation in mental health care from 54 expert contributors from all over the globe, appropriate for a subject that holds such promise for a worldwide clientele and that applies to professionals in every country. The book is now presented in two clear sections, the first addressing the technologies as they apply to being used within counseling and psychotherapy itself, and the second section applying to training and supervision. Each chapter offers an introduction to the technology and discussion of its application to the therapeutic intervention being discussed, in each case brought to life through vivid case material that shows its use in practice. Chapters also contain an examination of the ethical implications and cautions of the possibilities these technologies offer, now and in the future. While the question once was, should technology be used in the delivery of mental health services, the question now is how to best use technology, with whom, and when. Whether one has been a therapist for a long time, is a student, or is simply new to the field, this text will serve as an important and integral tool for better understanding the psychological struggles of one’s clients and the impact that technology will have on one’s practice. Psychotherapists, psychiatrists, counselors, social workers, nurses, and, in fact, every professional in the field of mental health care can make use of the exciting opportunities technology presents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's Madness examines Korea's critical years under Japanese colonialism when mental health first became defined as a medical and social problem. As in most Asian countries, severe social ostracism, shame, and fear of jeopardizing marriage prospects drove most Korean families to conceal the mentally ill behind closed doors. This book explores the impact of Chinese traditional medicine and its holistic approach to treating mental disorders, the resilience of folk illnesses as explanations for inappropriate and dangerous behaviors, the emergence of clinical psychiatry as a discipline, and the competing models of care under the Japanese colonial authorities and Western missionary doctors. It also analyzes interpretations of culture-bound emotional states that Koreans have viewed as specific to their interpersonal relationships, social experiences, local contexts, and the new medical discourses that the Korean press adopted to reshape social understandings of mental illness. Drawing upon unpublished archival as well as printed sources, this is the first study to examine the ways in which "madness" has been understood, classified, and treated in traditional Korea and the role of science in pathologizing and redefining mental illness under Japanese colonial rule"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the World Health Organization, mental disorders currently account for about 12.5% of the total burden of disease. This is expected to rise to15% by 2020. Whereas the resource-rich countries have the ability to address the problems posed by mental disorders, this is not the case with poor developing countries, most of them in Africa. For most countries South of Sahara and outside South Africa, and with the exception of Kenya, they have one psychiatrist for more than one million populations. The Kenyan situation of one psychiatrist for about half-million population is no solace at all. Most of the psychiatrists (just about 70 in May 2009) are to be found mostly in the main urban areas where many are not involved in day-to-day clinical work for the general public who cannot afford private treatment. Similarly, we have a gross deficiency of other health professionals with an interest in mental health. The long and short of it is that many people in Africa with mental illness grope in the dark. They have no access to appropriately trained mental health workers to turn to. They do not even know when they have mental disorders except when they are grossly disturbed when friends and relatives go seeking for the hardly available services. It is therefore necessary to impart some knowledge to the general public so that at least they can recognize the more subtle disorders in addition to the severe ones. Through knowledge they can have increased awareness and seek help from friends. More importantly, they will understand themselves. The book covers a wide range of topics. It includes mental health disorders and how they are generally recognized and managed, covering the whole spectrum of life. It also includes description of subjects of interest in relation to mental disorders. These include rights of people with mental disorders and the spiritual aspects of mental disorders to emphasize the fact there is nothing demonic about mental disorders any more than anything being demonic about malaria. People also find themselves in special situations, such as the prospects of death and dying, either of a relative or friend. People also have to deal with emotions as a result of the death of a relative or a friend. Of special interest is the person who is facing imminent death of self and knows about it. There are also those who actually think of taking away their lives. Besides describing those common situations, the book also addresses various approaches to the management of various mental health disorders and situations, by mental health workers but most importantly what they can do for themselves in their homes and in mitigations against the costs and stigma of mental illness. The book has given a chance to people with mental disorders to express themselves. It is hoped this book will serve to demystify mental disorders, and in the process significantly destigmatize people with mental disorders and in the process allow them together with their relatives, to come forward and demand for equal treatment, services and rights from the health professionals, policy makers, and medical insurers. This book is a must-read for everybody who cares for their mental well-being and that of others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the PhD experience as never before and provides a “survival guide” for current and prospective PhD students. The book investigates why mental health issues are so common among the postgraduate population, going beyond the statistics, looking at lived experience of both the author and as well as current PhD students, who have found balancing mental wellness with the PhD endeavour challenging. The author discusses tips and tricks she wished she had known at the start of her PhD process for managing mental health, such as managing imposter feelings, prioritising workload, and self-care strategies to help others throughout their own journey. The book goes beyond typical mental health discussions (where the focus for improving mental health is placed on PhD students to become “more resilient”) and explores some of the often unspoken environmental factors that can impact mental health. These include the PhD student-supervisor relationship, the pressure to publish, and deep systemic problems in academia, such as racism, bullying and harassment. Finally, the book is a call to action, providing tangible improvements from the author’s perspective that university institutions can make to ensure that academia is a place for all to thrive.

Book excerpt: When athletes cannot master the mental component of their game, they struggle to reach the next level and generally do not understand what is standing in their path. But there is a way for them to achieve physical-mental balance and unlock their true potential. In How to Master your Mental Game in Sports, author Jennifer Heistand explores the intricacies of the Heart, Mind, and Body connection. She shares with readers the unique techniques that help athletes in all sports perform at their highest level while being "in the zone". Athletes need to be in peak physical form to ascend to the top of their field, but an understanding of their mental state and its connection to their physical performance is crucial. They need to achieve the StillPoint of their mind-the place where they are free from the task of managing thoughts and handling emotions. Once athletes overcome the inner noise that prevents them from being in a "flow state" the sky is the limit. Understanding why mistakes are occurring is the key to correcting them. This book allows athletes to intuitively grasp these concepts, written in plain language that is easy to digest, and using sports-specific scenarios to illustrate its points.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professionals in modern psychology, behavioral medicine, and psychoneuroimmunology are exploring ways in which we can "mentally" influence our own bodies through hypnosis, imagery, visualization, attention, intention, and other forms of self-regulation--for fostering physical and psychological health and well-being. Is it possible for us to use such techniques to influence others, even at a distance, for purposes of healing? Is it possible for us to influence the images, thoughts, behaviors, and physiological reactions of other persons--separated by distance--without conventional sensory means of interaction? Can these abilities extend to animals and even to cells (e.g., human red blood cells)? Might these abilities be involved in the efficacy of distant, mental, or spiritual healing and intercessory prayer? Might these influences even extend to events distant in time--even "backwards in time?" Do these influences have major implications for our scientific theories, our human identity, the interconnections between ourselves and nature, and our relationships with others? Careful laboratory work--described in detail in this book--suggests that the answer to all these questions is a resounding "Yes!" A personal introduction and 12 detailed chapters describe the evidence that supporst these important claims. The book also describes the factors that make such distant mental influences more or less likely, so that anyone might use these distant influence skills more effectively and consistently for their own benefit and for the benefit of others.
