Download or read book Mad Blood Stirring written by Edward Muir and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1998-06-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Howard R. Marraro Prize for Italian History from the American Historical Association Nobles were slaughtered and their castles looted or destroyed, bodies were dismembered and corpses fed to animals—the Udine carnival massacre of 1511 was the most extensive and damaging popular revolt in Renaissance Italy (and the basis for the story of Romeo and Juliet). Mad Blood Stirring is a gripping account and analysis of this event, as well as the social structures and historical conflicts preceding it and the subtle shifts in the mentality of revenge it introduced. This new reader's edition offers students and general readers an abridged version of this classic work which shifts the focus from specialized scholarly analysis to the book's main theme: the role of vendetta in city and family politics. Uncovering the many connections between the carnival motifs, hunting practices, and vendetta rituals, Muir finds that the Udine massacre occurred because, at that point in Renaissance history, violent revenge and allegiance to factions provided the best alternative to failed political institutions. But the carnival massacre also marked a crossroads: the old mentality of vendetta was soon supplanted by the emerging sense that the direct expression of anger should be suppressed—to be replaced by duels.

Book Synopsis Modernity and Secession by : Michel Huysseune
Download or read book Modernity and Secession written by Michel Huysseune and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northern Italian, ‘Padanian’ identity, fostered by the Lega Nord, is rooted in the long-standing tradition, in political and scholarly discourse, of casting regional differences within Italy in terms of a North-South geographic divide. Trying to come to terms, in the late 1980s and 1990s, with Italy’s (real or presumed) inadequacies – such as inefficient government, corruption, and organized crime – this imagined geography acquired political centrality in that the North became associated with the virtues of modernity and the South with the vices of un-modernity. It was not only politicians but also social scientists, who fostered and perpetuated this conceptualization of the North-South divide, thus imposing a normative hierarchy between the two parts of the country. In response to this discourse many scholars, both in Italy and abroad, have started to question this perception of the South as a “backward” and implicitly inferior society. Starting from this critical tradition, Michel Huysseune provides a new, systematic, and interdisciplinary approach that re-interprets the premises behind Italy’s imagined geography of modernity. He moves beyond an understanding of the South as a “backward” and implicitly inferior society and problematizes normative notions of modernity, thus offering a new perspective on the North-South divide, which has a significance well beyond the case of Italy.

Book excerpt: This book is part of the OECD Environmental Performance Reviews Programme which conducts peer reviews of environmental conditions and progress in each Member country. It scrutinises efforts to meet both domestic objectives and international commitments. The analyses presented are supported by a broad range of economic and environmental data and lead to recommendations for further environmental and sustainable development progress. (OECD website). This reviews progress since 1994, when the previous environmental performance review was published. Among the priority concerns are: urban air pollution, soil and water management, waste management, nature and landscape conservation, climate change, transport management, and protection of coastal and the marine environment. Among a number of recommendations, Italy will need to: i) improve it environmental infrastructure; ii) integrate further environmental concerns into economic and social decisions and iii) reinforce its international environmental co-operation.
