Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a wide-ranging analysis of change in size and nature of Italian firms, and thus a unique and fascinating perspective on the evolution of one of the major industrial economies of the 20th century. An example of business history as it ought to be done. Giovanni Federico, European University Institute, Italy This book is necessary reading for a real understanding of the evolution of Italian capitalism during the last century. It moves away from a simplified view of the Italian industrial structure as just composed by small enterprises and successfully sheds light on the variety of different forms of enterprises the compose Italian system. The lively picture that emerges from this book is the one of richer types of enterprises, which have evolved over time and have contributed in different ways to Italian economic growth. Franco Malerba, Bocconi University, Italy Taking an historical perspective, this unique book highlights the evolution of the many diverse forms of business enterprise, and discusses the contribution of these different types of firm to the economic growth of Italy. One important issue that has recently captured the attention and the research efforts of both economists and economic historians has been the debate on varieties of capitalism in the modern world. In this context, the expert contributors analyze the various stages of Italian development that have been characterized by diverse dominating forms of enterprise which, in turn, have adapted to the nature of technological and market opportunities at the institutional, national and international level. This book proposes a new interpretation of the Italian case that utilizes both the structural and macroeconomic perspective of comparative history, as well as the microeconomic perspectives focusing on the strategies of different economic agents. Based on solid quantitative evidence, this original work will prove to be a valuable resource for academics and students of strategy and organization, economic historians and applied economists.

Book Synopsis State-Owned Enterprise in the Western Economies (Routledge Revivals) by : Raymond Vernon
Download or read book State-Owned Enterprise in the Western Economies (Routledge Revivals) written by Raymond Vernon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1981, this edited collection reviews the operations of state-owned enterprises, examining the actual performance of such organisations in the advanced industrialised countries. The authors consider the regularities and characteristics of state-owned enterprises, in particular the persistent efforts of managers to increase their autonomy and escape from the oversight of government agencies and the public. Chapters consider principles of finance and decision-making in these organisations and provide a truly international perspective with case studies in Italy, France and Britain. This is a timely reissue in context of the current economic climate, which will be of great value to students and academics with an interest in the nationalisation of companies, international business and the relationship between governments and managers.

Book Synopsis Reappraising State-Owned Enterprise by : Franco Amatori
Download or read book Reappraising State-Owned Enterprise written by Franco Amatori and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a quarter century of almost general condemnation and rebuttal of the entire nationalization experience, it appears that there are second thoughts about governmental direct intervention in the economy. Reappraising State-Owned Enterprise deals with a topic often undervalued in the past decade but which now, with the crisis of 2008-2009, calls for greater attention: the direct intervention of the State as Entrepreneur. The collection of essays in this volume – prepared by some of the leading authorities in the field – offers a contribution to this debate by providing a balanced assessment of two of the most relevant experiences of mixed economies, the United Kingdom and Italy. In this respect, a comparison between these two countries is very much appropriate since in both nations the State played an important role as "Entrepreneur" starting in the early 20th century. In Great Britain and Italy, the heyday of the "State as Entrepreneur" was in the years right after WWII when it was used as a tool for promoting a modern society in which citizens acquired a stronger sense of belonging to their nations. The UK and Italy saw the State take on a too-pervasive role in the 70s; the two nations responded in different ways. In the 1980s Great Britain embarked on a harsh process of privatizations while Italians struggled on until finally submitting to privatizations in their nation in the following decade. The deep crisis of the final years of the 21st century forced both nations to reconsider State interventions as an appropriate tool in order to protect the wellbeing of the national economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Niosi looks at the history of Canada's National System of Innovation (NSI), particularly during the post-war period, illuminating the fact that during and after World War II over 30 research universities, 150 government laboratories, and dozens of government policies aimed at nurturing innovation in private firms, academia, and government organizations were developed. He uses data obtained through questionnaire responses from all the large research and development organizations in Canada to analyse Canada's domestic system of innovation, finding increasing collaboration between universities, government laboratories, and private firms. He concludes that Canada has been quite successful in creating a national system of innovation and that the federal government, through its initiatives and innovative techniques, has been the main factor in the creation of this system.
